Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson tonight denied a report he's set to become Stanford's next athletic director, telling multiple media outlets he's not even discussed the job with administrators at Stanford.
The San Francisco Chronicle had reported this afternoon Anderson would soon be named A.D. at Stanford, but Anderson told several outlets the report was bogus.
"I have not talked to anyone at Stanford about that job and no one at Stanford has talked to me about their job," he told Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times. "There’s no truth to that. That is a bad rumor and whoever wrote that should be fired."
Anderson worked at Stanford as a fundraiser from 1995 to 1997. Chatter of mutual interest between Anderson and Stanford began more than a month ago and had grown to a crescendo recently. The Chronicle reported Stanford was turned down by Northwestern's Jim Phillips before offering Anderson, who was hired by Maryland in Sept. 2010, but he vehemently denied the report hours later.
