this isn't easy or an entitlement

  • crofton, you realize that in this thread you have gone from saying that Cole was always full even against bad opponents, even when the team wasn't great, to admitting that Cole was 20% empty in 1993 but arguing that was pretty good because the team was bad.

  • As I posted on the other thread, you essentially need to be in the top 50 percentile of the BCS teams to make the NCAAT.
Ourselves, KY and Arkansas are the only programs who have won a NC in the last 25 years (and were postseason eligible) to have missed this year's tournament.

Getting a team in the NCAA's is hard work and challenging.

I'm sick of coming here and reading that this is sone sort of birth right or entitlement.

If I'm handing out grades this year here is where I land...

Fans & Students -- D+ -- we show up for Duke and right now that is the only game we understand. We expect to be playing every march in the big dance but don't do our part. What is our part? Attend every home game, be loud -- early and often -- make Comcast a tough place to play for the opposition whether you are UMES or Duke.

Years on the message boards tell me that very few people including most who post as insiders and knowledgable fans have a clue. Winning at a very high level is complex and very hard and it has so many angles. There are no bad coaches in the ACC -- you need a game plan, motivation and preparation to be competitive in any game. Winning on the road is a bitch.

Staff -- B -- they were behind the eight ball coming in -- had to rebuild the roster and get to back to the dance. They are moving in the right direction and getting there fast. There are no "A's for not dancing no matter where you start. But this is Maryland and its still a GREAT place to be. We will be in next year but where we go will be determined by out working, out coaching, and out playing -- EQUALLY talented teams -- that is where the $$ are earned.

Players "C" -- came on hard at the end but took a while to get it. They are playing in the big time -- but have to understand -- or be taught -- that nice shoes, great unis, good hotels, and a great building doesn't make you great -- winning does. If you are not winning this should not be fun and if you think it is fun when you are not winning -- you are playing on the wrong level. This is your chance to make a statement about your school, and yourself -- you make that statement by not being happy or satisfied without winning.

Practice, preparation, and attitude build champions get hungry -- get mean -- get ready for a big year.

ACC "F" wtf -- I was in Greensboro for a while this weekend and Swofford and company were in a full front "Greensboro is the center of the universe love fest". Memo to Swofford and the ACC staff you got 4 teams in the dance -- you all should be Fucking Fired Tomorrow. How can you collect your paychecks when the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic 10, Mountain West, and PAC 12 have more teams in -- I'm fucking sorry I'm happy we are leaving becuase you suck. The ACC is small time and we are paying a price for that.

    Great post.

  • Also it's hilarious when I see crofton and others bitching about fans only getting up for the Duke game since the same could be said about the players and coaches for the past 10 years. At some point beating Duke became the goal for the program, not success in the NCAAT.

I went to 5 years of games at Cole including Francis's year, and our two final four teams. Let me let you in on a secret, the corner was empty for many of the non big games........UNC in Francis year had tickets go to public in student section, but go on.........

Yup. My freshman year was 2000-01. I missed the first few conference games since I was home for winter break, but when I returned for the Duke game, it really showed the difference in the atmosphere of both the student section and Cole in general between a non-con game and the Duke game.

If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?

  • This thead is exactly why it's important for head coaches to be heavily involved with boosters and to work with the right people in the system. Winning may cure all, but you need to have your supporters if things go sour. There is a reason Ralph lost his job, and it isn't because the guy wasn't a good football coach.

  • The funny thing is everyone was pretty optimistic on here after the Duke win. Two days later, a big booster is calling out fans/students.

Pretty much sums up this past decade of incompetence and excuses.

Even more so, we've been closer to a NCAA bid this year than the last two, and despite that disappointment and a late Maryland tease, most people seem to be relatively content with an NIT bid. As opposed to the usual meltdowns.

And the funny thing is if you want more fans to show then you better get used to more people getting pissed at NIT bids. You can't have it both ways. You want to be a big boy program? Fine. This shit doesn't fly at them either.

Crofton brings up IU, but those fans were out of patience with Crean before last season. Lets cut the bullshit and pretend than MD fans have unrealistic expectations and are less patient than others.

We turned out at Barclays and will again next year. Here's an idea that will fix most of this: WIN *##%*%# GAMES

  • I kind of feel like it's not where we have been but where we are going (or intending to go) with both revenue Programs. Coach Edsall had some real bad luck last year, and Coach Turgeon, by his own admission, found this group a difficult bunch to coach (I think that means young and dumb in a hoops sense).

Nothing will unite a University and bring it's students and fans out like winning, and as a fan, I remain supportive and hopeful going forward, and both coaches need to win for the good of everyone. For now I can live with an NIT bid, but mindful that missing in 6 of the last 9 years in the NCAA's is not a good thing any more than having 3 losing seasons in the last 4 is in football. So all in all, things are heading in the right direction at least in that sense.

And no, it isn't easy crofton. Let's hope the move to the B1G works out for the better. Oh and an indoor football and basketball facility would help make it all a little easier, wouldn't it? So as a fan, I'll see you around in the Fall. terps
