this isn't easy or an entitlement

  • Getting a team in the NCAA's is hard work and challenging.

I'm sick of coming here and reading that this is sone sort of birth right or entitlement.

If I'm handing out grades this year here is where I land...

Fans & Students -- C -- we show up for Duke and right now that is the only game we understand. We expect to be playing every march in the big dance but don't do our part. What is our part? Attend every home game, be loud -- early and often -- make Comcast a tough place to play for the opposition whether you are UMES or Duke. (edited to raise grade after sleeping on it and having some very important people call and tell me what to say per WM Terp12).

Years on the message boards tell me that very few people including most who post as insiders and knowledgable fans have a clue. Winning at a very high level is complex and very hard and it has so many angles. There are no bad coaches in the ACC -- you need a game plan, motivation and preparation to be competitive in any game. Winning on the road is a bitch.

Staff -- B -- they were behind the eight ball coming in -- had to rebuild the roster and get to back to the dance. They are moving in the right direction and getting there fast. There are no "A's for not dancing no matter where you start. But this is Maryland and its still a GREAT place to be. We will be in next year but where we go will be determined by out working, out coaching, and out playing -- EQUALLY talented teams -- that is where the $$ are earned.

Players "C" -- came on hard at the end but took a while to get it. They are playing in the big time -- but have to understand -- or be taught -- that nice shoes, great unis, good hotels, and a great building doesn't make you great -- winning does. If you are not winning this should not be fun and if you think it is fun when you are not winning -- you are playing on the wrong level. This is your chance to make a statement about your school, and yourself -- you make that statement by not being happy or satisfied without winning.

Practice, preparation, and attitude build champions get hungry -- get mean -- get ready for a big year.

ACC "F" wtf -- I was in Greensboro for a while this weekend and Swofford and company were in a full front "Greensboro is the center of the universe love fest". Memo to Swofford and the ACC staff you got 4 teams in the dance -- you all should be Fucking Fired Tomorrow. How can you collect your paychecks when the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic 10, Mountain West, and PAC 12 have more teams in -- I'm fucking sorry I'm happy we are leaving becuase you suck. The ACC is small time and we are paying a price for that.

I think I disagree with everything else but this is gold.

I agree with most of this, except I think the fans did a pretty good job for most of the ACC season. Seemed better than the past few years.

100000% you are right about the ACC. I went down to Gboro and CLT before, and this is when the ACC was getting more teams in the tourny. The event and atmosphere have nothing on the Big East (went to semi's this year) or the Big 10 which I have been to. They hang out in the middle of nowhere so they smell enough cow shit and don't realize their products stinks too. I can't wait for our first Big 10 tourny, I will be making it a yearly trip no matter our record. I have not gone to the ACC in a few years.

  • I agree with everything he said.

    Terp_N_Twine

  • Fans seemed pretty good this year in ACC play

  • Students were great for the large part of the year. In no way did they deserve a D+.

And it's completely unrealistic to expect the majority of fans to treat any game against UMES as anything different than what it is.

Bullshit -- place should be full for every game -- its THEIR team. Tickets are free -- the Duke game was electric, others not so much -- even Carolina the atmosphere was so so. They have a role to play and need to play it. That building doesn't give us an advantage the students do.

Whoever thought the students were great this year never went to a game in Cole.

I went to 5 years of games at Cole including Francis's year, and our two final four teams. Let me let you in on a secret, the corner was empty for many of the non big games........UNC in Francis year had tickets go to public in student section, but go on.........

    ColbertRepor

  • Cole has been gone for a decade. College basketball is not the same, and that aside let's not continue to romanticize the past and act like we filled Cole when we were a mediocre or bad team.

Agreed. Everyone wanted to be excited for this team but acc letdowns tempered that somewhat. Thought fans were fine

  • While I think you do a great job and are an amazing Terps fan, I don't think you've ever had a single orignal thought of your own ever. Stop being a microphone for other people who tell you how they think things are and come up to your own conclusions.

You think our students and fans were bad this year? Attendance increased despite not having been to the tournament in 2 years, no high caliber home opponents, and a team who was incredibly frustrating to watch. We showed incredibly well in Brooklyn and the crowds were significantly improved over last year. I don't know how you can give the players a C and the coaching staff a B. Those two grades should almost always be the same if you think the players are working as hard as they can.

    WMTerp12

  • Yeah because Cole was always absolutely electric for non-big games, especially in years where the team was mediocre! There were never, ever games where the students didn't fill up the student section. And the alumni were always in their seats at tip off. And never left early. UMES was treated exactly like they were Duke and UNC. Always.

  • Winning cures all ills... I feel like I've typed that line like 50 times in the last 6 months.

blah. All 7 of my college years were in Cole. The atmosphere for noncons was pretty much the same. I miss the place too, but I enjoy it not being 95 degrees at games. The atmosphere this year was generally awesome.

  • I get that it's a process and it takes time. I feel like most the decent posters here understand that, and we all think next year is when rubner should hit pavement to get us moving forward for good.

But the fans were solid. I hate being lectured on a made up past when cole was heavenly. It was a great envirinment, but for a school that has not been consistently good for ten years our fans bring it a lot better than most.

    SBryan

  • As a student I'm going to disagree partially. I went to every game, most didn't and I understand that. For the cupcake games not a lot of people showed up. But for most of the acc games we had a pretty good amount of people at the game given how we were playing. Not everyone is a hardcore fan like the us. Its frustrating but it is what it is.
I agree we are making progress as a program. Its a process. It takes a couple of years which is frustrating but we are 10000x better today than when Turgeon took the job.
