Who plays the point?

  • Any ideas what we're doing at PG next season? Is Stoglin going to get the opportunity to run the point now that he has "bought in" and since he'll want to show scouts he can play PG anyway? Plus, I would think we would be able to put the most talent on the floor at once with Stoglin at PG. I know it won't start this way, but I think by ACC play our best lineup could potentially be Stoglin, Faust, Layman, Len, Shaq.

I know that Allen was told he'd be playing point for us and is ready for it, but is Cassell going to try to do the same, or are we expecting him to just play the 2? Also barring any injuries, should we expect Faust to be officially done as a PG? Obviously too early to know all of this, but let's speculate.

  • We have 5 guys who can play the 1. That's a luxury and I'm sure Tuge will find the right combos.

  • In my opinion I see no reason at all to think that Stoglin will play the point at all this season.

  • Seth seems like the most natural pg on the roster. It's so hard to judge what a freshman's capabilities will be, but the kid has got skills and Turge really likes him.

If Seth and Sam can handle the point, I think we might see Pe at the 2 a bit more. Turge said toward the end of the year he thought Pe was more of a natural 2 anyway.

  • Stoglin will have every opportunity to be the starting point guard. One of the main reasons he came back is because Turge convinced him that, 1. He needs to learn how to become a point guard if he wants to stick in the league and 2. that Turge could teach him how to do that.

It would be awful shitty of Turge to tell Stogs that to get him to come back and then stick him off the ball because it will make us a better team.

This. Whoever performs best will get the time. Just nice knowing we actually have a bunch of options to potentially put at that spot

Is any of this fact or all supposition? Did I miss an article or something?

  • I think it will be a combination of Faust/ Pe/Cassell/Allen. I really dont see any reason to play Stoglin at the point unless its Faust at the 2, and Layman at the 3 with Len and Cleare down low. In that case, you could really keep Stoglin at the 2 and put Faust at the 1. Jake Layman seems to really give us unlimited flexibity with our lineup. He could be a nightmare of a matchup problem for other teams. If his handles are as solid as they seem, could you invision a possible lineup with Faust, Layman, Mitchell, Len, Cleare. Nobody in the ACC could match that size collectively next year.

  • Umm, Mitchell isn't playing the 3. But Faust/Layman/Cleare/Len at 2-4 is just gross in terms of length.

It's definitely a supposition. There's no reason to think that after Turgeon elected to go with Faust and even Thomas at the point over Stoglin that he's going to give Stoglin more of time there with (hopefully) Pe healthy and Allen and Cassell coming in.

More like "we have 5 guys who are roughly equivalent to each other at the 1." It's not like any of our options are really true point guards. We basically have 4 combo guards and a good wing and are hoping that one of them ends up being good at actually playing the point, or at least is a good ball-handler with enough vision to pass to open men and keep the scoring pressure off Stoglin. PG is still the position with the biggest ? by far.

    MisterSmiley

  • I would like to think Pe/Allen/Cassell will be running the show at PG all year. There is a chance that Faust and/or Stoglin will take up the ball every now and then but the other three will be our primary ball handlers IMO.

    GimmeTheShimmy

  • Not a big deal who is listed as the PG, we have enough guys who can handle it.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
