What's wrong with hope?

  • Look, I get it. Logic should tell all of us that Maryland has almost no shot at making the tournament. And yes, I have been amongst the masses screaming my lungs out at the TV and cursing the team and Turgeon after all our losses. And yes, I have threatened to stop watching games because they make my blood boil. But isn't hope what sports is all about? No matter how bad my teams are, I'm always calculating what they need to do to make the playoffs or in this case, sneak into the tournament. I still find myself in front of the TV for every Terps game. What's wrong with showing a shred of optimism? Sure, you can make the argument that it sets you up for ultimate disappointment, but doesn't that apply to every single fan in every sport of the teams that don't win it all?

I feel like 80% of the people on the boards that are posting the "no chance" and "Maryland's season ended weeks ago" posts are trying to reverse psychology themselves or cushion the blow of the probability. And I guess that's fine, if that's your method. I'm far from a glass is half full type of person. But regardless of what I scream out in moments of utter frustration, I will not count this team out of the tournament until the final buzzer sounds in their final ACC tournament game. Call me an idiot. Downvote me. Whatever. That's what sports is all about.

  • There's nothing wrong with hope if you haven't been a MD fan in the past decade and seen your hopes pooped on nearly every time.

  • awesome op. I hope we get in too, and if we do get in, I hope we win it all.
also, next year, I hope we win all our games.

  • Honestly if they can't beat a not great UNC team at home with the season on the line they don't deserve an NCAA bid anyway.

I'm still terrified of UNC now that they're actually playing their 5 best players.

Good post. There's still hope. UConn went 9-9 in the Big East before winning the natty two years ago, and this is one of those years where there's no dominant team.

Yup, but we'll beat them then lose @UVA and the final dagger will be losing the chippy next Thursday night.

    Because Maryland.
