Turgeon on NCAAT selections: "Perception rules everything."

  • A bit off topic, since Maryland is playing in the NIT, but coach Mark Turgeon was asked Monday afternoon for his thoughts on the NCAA Tournament selection process. He went on a mini-rant that was similar to those of former coach Gary Williams.

    Here are his full comments:

    “I think perception rules everything when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. I’ve noticed that over the years. The perception of our league wasn’t great. Our league was much better than last year. I think we got five in last year. We only got four in this year. We had some bad losses early, and it stuck with us. Teams like us and Virginia just didn’t get it done on the road. If we would have won on the road a little more, I think we both would have got in, but we didn’t.

    “Was [North] Carolina an eight [seed]? No, that was a bad draw. They’ve won eight out of 10. Sometimes I think they put Roy Williams back in Kansas [to play his former team] Kansas. That’s not right, but they did it. It will be a big draw with a lot of stuff to write about leading into it.

    “There was so much talk about the Mountain West all year. A 9-7 team [San Diego State and Boise State] got in from that league. I just think that’s the way it works. Next year, when the season starts, the ACC is going to be the league from the very beginning. Everyone is going to talk about the ACC like the Big Ten and the Big East this year, so I imagine we’ll get more teams in next year.”

  • Back at the start of the season all the pundits were sounding off on the fact that they thought the ACC was a very weak conference this year and would only get 4 teams into the tournament. So all of that blabber early on has doomed the ACC to just 4 teams in the tournament. It never seems to amaze me how the early season press gets to dictate who the committee will choose. Happens every year...the conferences that are highly rated by the press at the beginning of the season usually have the most teams in the tournament. And the conferences that the press downgrades get the fewest.

    A lot of it has to do with the Top 25 polls. If the B1G has 6 teams ranked in December you can bet they will have at least 6 ranked in March. When all they do is play eachother, and everyone is thought highly of, everyone looks better by association.

    If you go .500 but you beat 6 ranked teams and lost to 6, you're gonna be in the tournament no matter what.

  • Other conferences -- the B1G in particular do a much better job with the media and they actively promote their teams. Think of it this way -- the ACC has their media day in Greensboro -- with very few direct flights and not a whole of a lot to do -- the B1G is in Chicago.

    As I said in another thread -- the ACC does little to help -- Swofford is working under 1980 guidelines in 2013.

  • Well, there is truth to the perception theory. Perception was UNC and NC State would be top 25 teams all year and both of them underachieved especially State. So now we are looking at having only 2 top 25 teams most of the season. The fact they are both top 5 seems to be irrelevant. It is similar to what Bilas said on Sunday. It is not that we have 2 top teams but its the fact that 10 out 12 members are not top 25 which perceives us to be a weak league. Never in a million years should a Boise or SDSU get in with those type of records but their computer geeks have figured out a way to schedule and beat the system. The whole system is completely unjust. MD gets penalized for playing a weak OOC but it seems other schools get bumped for scheduling tougher but not winning any of those games.

    The ACC WAS a very weak conference this year.
