Stoglin

Ok, this is really stupid. But just for shits and giggles:

    All Time ACC Scoring List: 1. Tyler Hansbrough, North Carolina 2872 2. J. J. Redick, Duke 2769 3. Dickie Hemric, Wake Forest 2587 4. Johnny Dawkins, Duke 2556 5. Rodney Monroe, N. C. State 2551 6. Bryant Stith, Virginia 2516 7. Christian Laettner, Duke 2460 8. Mike Gminski, Duke 2323 9. Jeff Lamp, Virginia 2317 10. David Thompson, N. C. State 2309

Stoglin plays 70 more games (10 remaining this year, 30 next two years): - To get a Maryland player finally on the list (and knocking David Thompson off) He has to get to 2310 points. To get that, he has to average 21.3 (his avg now) for the rest of his career. Doable. - To break Hansbrough's all time record, he'll need 2,873. That's a sick 29.3 ppg. Impossible.

Now, the 70 games is really the bare minimum. We're not counting any post season games (ACC, NCAAT, NIT, whatever) and we may even play in more than 30 regular season games. So let's add another 15 post season games, to give him 85 total games remaining in his career. That means: - To get on the all time scoring list (2310), he ONLY has to average 17.6 ppg. - To break Hansbrough's record? He'll have to do 24.1 ppg. Likely still impossible. FWIW, that would put Stoglin at 138 total games played, Hansbrough had 142 games.

Can we please put an asterisk next to the dook and UNC players as "zebra assisted". Thanks!

    A couple thoughts:

I will never hate on Stogs for the simple fact that he cares more then anyone else. Every game he leaves it all out there and that's all you can really hope for. For example, at the end of the Temple game when the bottom dropped out and our close game turned into a double digit loss everyone started to check out. You could see everyone's eyes start to glaze over and accept the loss. But not Stogs. Stogs was so pissed about the loss he was starting fights with Temple players. If you remember, Turge had to take him out at the end of the game with like >1 minute left. Same as last year. When we lost the UNC game which essential ended our chances of making the NCAAT he was so f*cking pissed he just walked of the court and didn't talk to anyone. Meanwhile, an already checked out JWill was dapping up UNC players like they were in the NBA already and the game didn't matter.

I think the only thing separating Stogs from one of the truly greats is those 3 extra assists per game Kemba was averaging. It's frustrating because it just seems so obvious. If he can learn to spend the meat of the games getting his teammates involved and then only taking the game over in crucial spots, he would be an NBA caliber point guard. This isn't anything new, GV alluded to it on twitter today and we generally hear the same point every time there is a new elite scoring point guard in coming up in college. The real question is whether or not he's mature enough/coachable enough to take the lesson to heart.

Either way, I appreciate the OP's point. It's rare that we get the chance to watch someone play who even has the potential for greatness. We should definitely take time to appreciate the ride.

I agree. I was at that UNC game last year. He went off, we lost and he looked like he wanted to fight the entire UNC bench, and then left the floor with out shaking hands. He is an intense kid.

As of now, Stoglin has 85 3-pointers made, currently tied with John Gilchrist for 16th all time in MD History:

http://www.terrapinstats.com/bb/topCareer.cfm?stat=3fgm (those stats are outdated for Stoglin)

If you go by his season averages, he makes 2.5 three's a game / and attempts 6.4. That's good for a smidge under 40%. So if he plays 70 more games, that's 175 more three's in his career. Plus the 85 he already has = 260 total. Way ahead of Dixon's 239.

Mosley is at 58 after making two more yesterday. I wonder if has any shot at taking that 20th spot away from DJ Strawberry.

  • So let's add another 15 post season games

15 post season games over this and the next couple of seasons is a lot. Thats 5 a season, so they'd have to make a run in either the ACCT or NCAAs/NIT each year, which is currently asking a lot from this team.

Not that it necessarily applies here, but there's a fine line between wanting to win more than everyone else and being a punk.

See Gilchrist, John (who has seen the error of his ways recently which is great to see).

He was, but GV was a hardworker and improved a lot. Hopefully Stoglin goes that route rather than John Gilchrist route and lets his head get to big.

But yeah there were times during GV's sophomore year where I was like hes a "good player, but ..." Nevertheless GV worked hard and improved.

Plenty of good scorers are good defenders (Derrick Rose, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan). You have to know when you can get your rest in the game.

Seems like fair comparisons to me!!

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

    Omar Little

  • Michael Jordan pretty much ruined basketball for everyone else. Before him nobody ever gave two craps about whether superstars could or did play any defense. See 80s, 19.
