Maryland coach Mark Turgeon held a teleconference with the media Sunday night to break down his team's invitation to the NIT. Here's what he had to say ...

  • I just hope they continue to be aggressive when going to the basket. Don't settle for jump shots just impose your will.

  • The team is making progress. 17 wins last year. No tournament. Five freshman and 22 wins, NIT this year. Sure, we wanted to make the NCAA's, but you don't disrespect the NIT. This will be very good experience with so many freshman and sophomores. Help is on the way next year. The recruiting trail looks good. Mediocrity is not acceptable. Progress is being made.

No one is happy about making the NIT, but FWIW, it's a step forward for the program and an opportunity to play meaningful postseason games and get extended practice time for a very young team. This isn't the same as the 2006 debacle.

  • Since we're going to the NIT, we have to make the best of it. No point in whining @ the decision-just use the extra court time as practice, etc. It does give a chance to put Padgett on the floor, hopefully in New York (his home). He never dogged it and gave us everything he had this year.

No one is saying that mediocrity is acceptable, obviously. Do you think Turgeon and the players want to be in the NIT? Of course not. They want to be in the NCAA's but that didn't happen this year, so playing in the NIT is a great chance to get some extra practices and games in for a young team. If you look at where the team was when Turgeon took over it's actually incredible how far we have come along. The roster he inherited resembled a D2 team and now we are stocked with young talent, we just won 22 games, and we are the overall #2 seed in the NIT which means we just missed out on the NCAA's. If we had consistent PG play this year there's no question we would be dancing right now. Not only is he a great recruiter, he is a great coach and we will see that over the next several years. The guy has won everywhere he's been and he will have a great, long career here at Maryland. People need to chill a little bit and give the guy some time. Put things in context a little bit. Did you actually expect us to be as good as we are right now when Turgeon first took over? I didn't and I bet you didn't either.

  • Some people on this board are utterly unbelievable. A lot of posters were very pissed off and irrationally calling for Turgeon to be fired and rightfully upset that we were headed to the NIT. We beat Duke and all of a sudden we're patting the team on the back and everything is rainbows and sunshine? Maybe beating Duke is all that a lot of you care about.

And this isn't on Turgeon, this is more a culmination of how mediocre we've been for basically the entire post natty decade other than a few bright spots here and there. I just don't like our coach who's style is "winning" to act like we should be thrilled and throwing a parade for the team to be getting a 2 seed in the NIT since "a lot of teams aren't playing right now". Instead of trying to lower the bar I'd like to see him say more how not making the tournament is unacceptable and show some remorse. I have no problem with trying to be positive for the team's sake, but also show that our current situation is unacceptable.

Hooked on Phonics has failed you. Turgeon's quote:

"We haven’t been to the postseason in two years here, so it’s a step in the right direction in year two."

Where the hell is the acceptance of mediocrity in that statement? This tournament is a good thing as it enables the team to keep playing and gain experience. It means the program continues to move forward.

    TerpsFan703

  • I believe one big part of our poor OOC SOS was this team's youth. The coaches wanted the opportunity for our young guys to grow not just their games but their confidence. This team will put an effort into the NIT and take positives away.

Does that mean Turge has been playing for the NIT all along and means that we're accepting mediocrity? Of course not.

And the 2006 team is much different...for one, that team actually deserved to dance.

    ajefx

  • Maybe "great opportunity" is overdoing it, but I think it's Turge is right in seeing this as an opportunity to get valuable experience right as the team is starting to get it and to get the fans to show up to support the team. Nothing is gained by shitting on the NIT and we could improve the team and get more fan support and dollars by saying it's a good opportunity.

Let's just win the whole thing and make the Tournament next year with no doubt whether we're in.
