  • I have never posted or spoken anything negative about you since you are MY Team's Head Coach and to do so could, In my opinion, have a negative impact on your ability to do your job, which is to Win Football Games and thereby elevate the enjoyment our fans attending games in Byrd Stadium. This would no doubt have the the affect of encouraging more of our fans to join in the experience, etc., etc., etc., ................

In order to kick start the aforementioned etc.'s, I think we, which in this case means YOU, need to do whatever you can to generate fan interest and enthusiasm as soon as possible. Your current policy of NO Open Practices is counter productive to that end. Please read the following, which I have extracted from a rivals official web site. It vividly demnonstrates my point better than I could put into words.

Charlottesville, Va. - The Virginia football team will hold practices open to the general public for six consecutive days beginning with the start of fall camp on Monday, Aug. 6 and concluding Saturday, Aug. 11.

The open practices will start at 4 p.m. Monday and at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and will be held at The Park, the University's intramural fields located at 1015 Massie Road. The final open practice will be Saturday, Aug. 11 at Scott Stadium beginning at 4 p.m. Each of the open practices will last approximately two hours. Practice times are subject to change pending weather conditions. Admission is free.

"Our fans are an important part of the Virginia football program," head coach Mike London said. "The open practices at The Park and Scott Stadium provide an opportunity for them to see the newcomers in action and the development of our returning players as we prepare to kickoff the 2012 season. I look forward to seeing many of our great fans during the first week of practice."

Meet the Team Day Information -- Virginia will hold its annual Meet the Team Day at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday, Aug. 19. Players and coaches will be available for photos and autographs from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The main entrance as well as the arena's southeast and garage entrances will be used for Meet the Team Day. Each entrance will open at 1:30 p.m.

 Admission is free.

Fans will be able to pick up copies of the 2012 Cavalier Football schedule poster, schedule magnet and schedule cards. The first 500 youth in attendance will receive a free UVa-Nike mini football. The Cavalier Team Shop in the arena's lobby will be open and concession stands featuring beverages and snacks will be available on the arena floor. All fans in attendance also have the opportunity to win door prizes.

There will be plenty of activities for young Cavalier fans, including inflatable games and other activities. The Cavalier and his horse, Sabre, will be in attendance along with members of the Virginia spirit teams.

Virginia opens its season Sept. 1 at Scott Stadium against Richmond at 3 p.m.

I am not suggesting that you should replicate an opposing rival's coach's actions to the letter, but as a Terp fan trapped in the middle of what they call "HooVille", I can assure you the practices Coach London has adopted to encourage fan involvement have done wonders for his image and, OBTW, his job security.

I'm all for a fan day and things like that. Having said that, I used to go to watch a 2 a day practice under Vandy and Duffner and - no kidding - at most there would be 10-20 people there, and that would consist of a handful of parents, a few local coaches, Josh Barr, a recruit or two and perhaps another fan or two.

I think the idea of a single open practice with other things, like with what UVa is doing, is a good idea - maybe even have those in attedance purchase season tickets and pick out the seats they want, with a discount and even a giveaway of some sort (a hat, etc.).

  • Does this dude EVER post anything without alluding to UVA or VT?

  • All football coaches are crazy and most think what they do is a state secret. If 10 or 20 want to watch practice, then by all means let them. Or at least have a practice or two open per week. It's par for the course for football coaches and especially those like Edsall though.

On top of that we'll get less coverage in the Post, Sun, and Times than a normal team coming off a 2-10 season b/c the press can't watch practice. Some real brilliance.

  • I'm saying RE needs to show a little more in the Fan Appreciation/PR Department. He could accomplish it all in one fell swoop by holding two Open Practices (preferably Saturdays) and designating them as fan appreciation days and making the players available at one of them for "meet and greet" sessions to sign fans' gear or whatever, photo ops, etc. It definitely helps to bond the Fans to the Players, not just the Uniforms. I'm sure Eli will back me up on that issue.

He could accomplish it in one fell swoop by just putting the names on the backs of the jerseys. Ask 100 season ticket holders if they would rather have the names on the jerseys or have an open practice and 100 would choose the former.

  • As a season ticket holder, if I lived in the area I'd much prefer open practices. I don't need names on jerseys. Having said that, no reason not to have names on the back ( although clearly not a recruiting issue that some claimed it was)

I want both. While I know a lot of players by their numbers there are always some I don't and its pain when you are watching a game and you don't know a player who was involved in the play. For example, last year I posted something about Lukas Foreman making a tackle last year in a thread and it turns out he never got into a game. If names are on jerseys, us fans don't make mistakes like that.

It just makes it much easier when at the game to identify players. I know they have new unis this year, but the numbers were hard to read on the black and red jerseys at times last year. With all the young players we have and with guys changing uniform numbers every year, it would be something that many fans would appreciate.

  • Agree 100% on the name issue. Unless there's been a long standing tradition (ND, PSU, ...) then it tells me the coach has ego issues. Kind of like naming the team's web site after yourself or making statements like, "It's your team, but it's My Program.", for instance. no

    ZZ Terp

  • The names will be back on the jerseys for all games but the two that they are breaking out the "Maryland Pride Jerseys" for. BTW the nameless jerseys last year were not an Edsall call.
