Could this be our most versatile Hoops Roster ever?

  • We only have 11 on scholarship (so far) this season, but the Depth Chart is flat out stacked.

1- Howard, Allen, Cassell, Aronhalt, Lipinski
    2- Faust, Cassell, Aronhalt, Allen
    3- Faust, Layman, Aronhalt
4- Padgett, Len, Cleare, Mitchell, Layman
    5- Cleare, Len, Padgett

Caveat: I realize/hope some of them will likely never see time at all those positions, but if the need arises (God forbid) they could provide emergency minutes there given their talent and physical attributes.

It's crazy, you could legitimately have out there:

    1. Howard (or Aronhalt)
    2. Cassell
    3. Faust
    4. Layman
    5. Len

Just all shooters. It's going to be exciting/interesting to see what Turge does with this team.

While you're at it Howard can play the 2. Mitchell can play the 3 or 5 and layman can play the 2.

If you want to go with a super sick big lineup you could put Faust, layman, Mitchell, cleare, Len.

  • You can do that every year. If Aronholt is playing the point or Layman is playing the four this year, we're probably in for some hurt.

    Tabe

  • 87-88 team was ridiculous...too bad Bob Wade was coaching them:

Guards: Rudy Archer, Keith Gatlin, Teyon McCoy, John Johnson
Forwards - Derrick Lewis, Steve Hood, Tony Massenburg, Dave Dickerson
Centers - Brian Williams (Bison Dele), Rodney Walker

Keep in mind that Johnson started and averaged 11 ppg as a sophomore in 86-87. 87-88 was his junior year and with Gatlin back and Rudy Archer around he rarely played. So he was a former starter that was now on the bench because of our deep guard rotation. Teyon McCoy also started in 86-87 prior to Gatlin's return and the arrival of Archer. So our starting guards from 86-87 were now both coming off the bench. Same with Dave Dickerson...starter in 86-87 that averaged over 8 ppg and was now riding pine. That's how deep we were. We had three guys that could easily start at PG in Archer, Gatlin and McCoy. Derrick Lewis was coming off the 86-87 season as being 1st team All-ACC (averaged 19.6 ppg and 9.5 rpg). With the addition of Brian Williams and the return of Tony Massenburg his numbers took a hit. Same with Steve Hood...he averaged 14 ppg as a freshman in 86-87 and went to 7.8 in 87-88.

  • lots of depth in basketball-homer speak always means a lack of superstars. sorry to burst the bubble.

    RDurr

  • It's versatile because nobody knows if half the team is any good. Let's not pretend that's a good thing.

    hgoodman

  • More importantly is that this team is absolutely huge. There's going to be a lot of times where the second shortest guy on the court is 6'7.

    b1210k

  • Until we KNOW we have an elite PG, we know very little

The original basketball, message board, superhero.

    hoopmanx

  • I hate when I have to agree with both hgoodman and rdurr, but yeah. On the other hand, its pretty exciting having almost no idea what this team is actually going to look like.

Howard and Faust are not shooters, Layman is not a 4 and Len isn't really a 5...I'd be shocked if this lineup ever sees the court though I do see where you're going. If you want your "versatile shooting lineup" i'd be more inclined to see

    Faust, Allen, Layman, Len, Cleare.

what? That lineup most certainly could see the court based on we don't know shit right now.

Faust will take more outside shots than anyone else on the team this year, and he'll knock them down at a reasonable clip. He's not a lights out shooter, but he's a shooter.

  • 5 freshman, none of which were in the top 25, does not equal a stacked roster

I would be SHOCKED if Layman gets mintues at the 4 this year.

WTF. There are plenty of scenarios where Layman could play the 4 whether by design or in a injury/foul trouble jam.

First Faust will predominantly play the point now Layman will never see time at the 4. You got thought process issues.

There are not many elite PGs in college basketball. With a 68 team field and a weak ACC this year, a serviceable PG could give us a legit shot at making the NCAAs. That's not the only question we have on the team, but its probably the biggest.

Overall, I'm excited to see these guys play, they're going to have ups and downs, but its going to be a lot more fun to watch then the last two years.

    Paulyboy50

  • I could definitely see him playing the 4 against 3- and 4-guard lineups that some smaller teams throw, or if we go into a zone defense.

    MisterSmiley

  • Yes, we have depth and versatility. But we are also young and unproven.

Also, some people need to stop with the Pe at 2 comments. I just can't see it happening there for him. With all the legitimate options we have at the 2 (Allen, Faust, Aronhalt, Cassell) he isn't really a good enough shooter to play there.

Plus the fact that he is our most experienced 1. Unless Allen breaks out, if Pe is in the game he's bringing it up the court.

Yes, it could happen. But it certainly isn't going to be an every game scenario.

    He's a pure 3.

Faust WILL play a ton of minutes at PG early on. I'm not sure why you consider that so far fetched? Turgeon has already said that.

Truth. Pe'Shon is as true a 1 as we have. He's capable of knocking down an open shot once and again but he's not a 2. If he has to play there it means we've majorly swung and missed with the 4 guys you mentioned.
