SIAP. Comments about our politically active Rhodes Scholar alum's thoughts?
Coaches receive huge financial bonuses when their team is winning. Yet the incentives for academic success in contracts show how warped priorities have become at some institutions.
As long as illiterates "graduate", using a graduation "rate" is a foolish, feel-good standard. No one should expect basketball players to graduate at the same percentage of a student body which is much more capable of handling college coursework. I do think penalizing coaches for academic fraud situations is a worthwhile goal. To me, that's a much greater problem.
"This we know for sure: The current path of big-time college sports is neither economically sustainable nor morally defensible."
Finally, someone writes an article about Debbie Yow.
Screw those guys.
Is it really true that few athletic programs are self supporting? I thought most if not all d 1 programs were self supporting.
It depends what you mean by "few" and "self-supporting", but there aren't many D1 institutions who balance the books without fat subsidies from the state or off of student fees.
