He let BC dictate pace of play and lineups all night. We had superior size and strength and yet we played their game. There's a reason why Aronhalt had a good game - because we played the same cheap drive and kickout mid-major type offense that a team like BC is accustomed to. And a team like BC is going to be pretty well drilled at defending that style of offense since they see it in practice every day. We took 27 threes for god's sake. It took a career game from Aronhalt to make the percentage respectable. It's not a sustainable offensive style with the way this team is presently constructed.
On the intangible side, it falls to your coach to sufficiently motivate the team after such a big win this weekend. He couldn't do it, and the lack of hustle, rebounding, and effort on loose balls were illustrative of that.
Was the Duke win a huge feather in Turgeon's cap? Yes. Has Turgeon been outcoached pretty consistently in conference play this year? Yes. I said after the Duke game that Turgeon has been rightly criticized for many of his performances this year, Duke game notwithstanding. I got downvotes for it. To the downvoters: how can you defend this? The guy is not coaching this team to its full potential, which is probably 2-3 more wins than we have.
I hate being critical of the guy because his recruiting has been great and he's dealing with an exceptionally young team, but I just can't reconcile a coaching effort like the one tonight.
I'm more upset he left Len out there for as long as he did when it was obvious he either didn't give a shit or had nothing in his tank.
Mitchell and Shaq can't guard bigs who can shoot but at least one of them could have hustled for a GD rebound.
sure. but the players had to know how important this game was too
It could be worse, we just suffered our first bad loss of the season. Until we learn to win on the road this is an nit team.
Here's my question for the Turgeon loyalists. Show me an example of good coaching from him that can't be attributed to national hype like the Duke game.
I really want to give him the benefit of having such a young team but he has failed to make the simplest half time changes and consistently gets out-coached by virtually everyone. BC's coach is good because he knows his team strengths and makes adjustments that are needed...same as UVA's coach. Turgeon never changes and has lost quite a few games because of it.
9/21/2010...RIP Old IMS.
Would love to have heard what he said during half time. Zero adjustments.
how can anyone be a Turge loyalist at this point? the jury is still out.
There aren't. There's wait and sees, there's this doesn't look good, then there's dumbfucks who want to fire him in year two.
Not a loyalist, but there's something to be said about giving Turgeon some time before calling for him to be fired. Yes, we are wildly inconsistent, but we've also got an incredibly young team that hasn't played together much and no PG.
I mean, think about this. The last 3 classes Gary recruited are down to Padge, Pe and Faust. how can you win with that?
I'm as frustrated as anyone, but he's had to turn over 80% of the roster in a year and a half. It's just really really tough.
I do agree though, some of his coaching has been suspect at best. My Hope is that when we finally get consistency out of some of the guys (any of the guys?) that we'll see him do a much better job.
Ok so the goal is "no bad losses"? Maybe we didn't have a bad loss until tonight, but we sure as hell should have won a couple more of the games against roughly equal competition (think UVA and FSU x 2).
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
Kaiser is the only idiot who wants him fired.
That said, once this season goes down the shitter he is looking at a very uncomfortable offseason heading into next year.
There's plenty of blame to go around between him and Gary. Either way this program is Arkansas and its pathetic.
Wait, so the Turge Mafia member is not a Turge loyalist?
We've got a bunch of recruiters first - coaches second on the bench. Can't help.
Well that happened a while ago.
This is true. I have to wonder if he regrets having basically 1 bench coach and 2 recruiters on his staff. The recruiting is decent, but you gotta wonder how much Dalonte and Bino bring to the table in terms of coaching.
I actually think Dalonte dozes off some games he's so lethargic.
For the record, I'm not saying we fire the guy on the spot. I'm just saying that he'll have to do some otherworldly recruiting to make up for his current coaching deficiencies.
at the Turge Mafia and the Faust Mafia.
Arkansas basically shits on our history, so LOL at when people use that as the comparison to demean what we've done.
