Roddy Peters Injury/Surgery Update

  • Roddy Peters has played with a shoulder injury through four games this season, but the 6-foot-4 Suitland guard plans to shut it down and have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder Dec. 21.

Peters will play in two more games for Suitland, which lost to St. John’s, 65-64, on Saturday in the DMV Tip-Off Classic. His last game for the Rams will be Dec. 20 against Eleanor Roosevelt.

“It was hard,” Peters said of his decision to have surgery. “At first, I wanted to play so bad. I wanted to get the championship. But then I started thinking I had bigger things to look forward to. I thought it would be better to get it over with now, so I’d be better when I get to Maryland.”

Peters has been hindered by the injury this year, and admitted he has only been able to drive to his right side due to the possibility of further injury.

After having surgery Dec. 21, Peters will go through a six-month recovery process. He’ll be able to do light workouts after two months but won’t be able to go full speed or play through full contact for six months.

Maryland coach Mark Turgeon, who was in attendance to watch Peters and fellow 2013 commit Damonte Dodd on Saturday, has been telling the future Terp to be careful on the court before having surgery.

“He’s just been saying not to get hurt,” Peters said. “He doesn’t want me playing, but he understands the situation. He just told me not to get hurt anymore. That’s what I’ve been trying to do.”
