Yes the fanbase has a huge gap in its excitement for Duke than every other team that comes here. Yes there are some things that need to change. But the Duke game and environment is awesome. Not everything needs to be a springboard for malcontent.
You'll be able to convince me there isn't a Duke obsession when I see a "Wake Week" or "Clemson Week" thread
Any enthusiasm for the Duke game was squashed when we lost to UVA on Sunday. That game was much more important in the grand scheme of things. This is the first time where I have little excitement playing Duke after watching our horrid offense and mindless turnovers last weekend. Of course I'm hoping for the best but we're not exactly on a tear at the moment.
Board posters don't comprise the entirety or even majority of the fanbase. There is absolutely a Duke obsession by and large in our fanbase. TSM even plays into it (for good reason)! They package 3-game plans etc. by including a "chance to buy tickets for the Duke game!" Not to mention that for many students it's the one game a year they even bother to try to go to, and even then it's just to mainly yell "Fuck Duke" because they think it's cool, tradition, etc.
This game is huge for our season. But not because we're playing Duke, because we're playing the #1/2 team in the country which happens to be Duke for a chance at a huge quality win.
Why the fuck would anyone be excited about playing Wake or Clemson? There is a Duke Week thread because we face one team this week, Duke, who also happens to be the #2 team in the country and we are desperately in need of a win. If Duke sucked, no one would care. God you people are insufferable.
The majority of our fanbase also probably doesn't realize we don't play Duke and UNC twice each year, which is why you saw a lot of the immediate negative reaction towards the move to the Big-10. Once you start explaining the differences between today's ACC and the ACC we grew up in most of them start to get it.
I'm pretty much excited and map life around every game but I support this.
Duke just highlights that the wider base seems to need more than "Maryland" to gravitate with huge interest. The 1%ers want "Maryland" to be good and to stand on its own two feet. It's fair game to bemoan a culture that's become as much anti-Duke as it has pro-Maryland. But there's a lotta grumpy posts restating the Duke overemphasis here again. We get a top 2 team at our place, it's the silver bullet to saving a season (ok not entirely), and we have a week lapse without a game. If we played UVA tonight instead of Sunday we'd be talking about them. Just roll with it. It doesn't make you a minion or mindless cattle. Have fun and let's save the highminded Duke problem for another time.
Lol? This is exactly what every single school/professional sports franchise does.
If Clemson was ranked #2 in the country there would absolutely not have been a "Clemson Week" thread.
I have no beef with people being excited for the game, my problem is the people that get excited for the DUKE GAME every year. "Duke Week" has been a thing on campus for many years now. And in most of those years we were an irrelevant, mediocre team that got our shit pushed in by Duke. It should embarrass everyone.
What would you prefer? That we don't get fired up for any games when we don't have great teams? Just because we haven't had ranked teams the last 6-7 years doesn't mean we shouldn't get fired up to play Duke. Who gives a fuck if people get fired up for the Duke game? If the extra energy is worth 1 point in the game to try and beat them then it's all worth it.
Are you gonna be happy when were playing in the Big Ten and none of the games are the biggest game?
Wow. This is NOT roomy!
Great responses in this thread.
Duke and UNC are like sugar to some MD fans.
Its all some of you wake up for.
MD's time in the ACC has gone. So I don't care anymore.
