2012 Starters Under New School Turge

  • To me Stogs is the only non-Turge recruit that is truely ACC starter caliber. I see at least 2 freshmen starting out the gate with Stogs, Faust, and Len. People getting new school Turge confused with old school Gary on that seniority BS. I believe SHAQ will start day one at the 5 with Len at the 4. I forsee starters being one of 2 scenarios: Stogs/Cassell or Allen/Faust/Len/Shaq or moving Faust to SG and starting Layman at SF. Even with Pe healthy his minutes are going to get cut into for Turge to start developing players he recruited. If Mitchell gets in shape I can also see much pine time for one of the Padgett/Pankey combo. Freshmen will bring alot of intenisty/energy to the squad that seemed to be lacking with last years team. Practices should be very competitive.

  • No big man is going to start this year.

The lineup is going to be

    Stogs
    Pe
    Faust
    Padgett
    Len

the Freshmen will all be coming off the bench at least to start the year.

Sr Padge > any non 1 and done Big man freshmen.

  • I love the off season where everyone of our recruits are going to be all Americans. College basbetball then acc basketball is a huge difference than high school ball. Both Pe and Padgett will be starting, les see how things shake out throughout season. I see shaq and layman seeing significant time and cassell and Allen getting some burn. Mitchell and does probably won't see too much playing time.

  • turge likes playing 4 big men at least. I think every single one of the Fr outside of Dodd will get Run next year.

  • Even if Pe is healthy and able to start the season at 100% (which I don't think will happen) IMO Stogs will see major minutes at PG. One of the main reasons Stogs came back was to show the NBA that he can play PG. Also he and Turge allegedly agreed that he would play more of a PG role this year. Consider all of that plus the fact that Pe was just plain not very good when he did play last year. I see a good possibiity that Allen sees significant back up minutes at the PG. Stogs at PG also creates somewhat of a domino effect at other positions. With Stogs playing PG that opens up some minutes at the SG for Cassell and/ or Faust. If Faust is playing some SG then that leaves minutes at SF for Layman.

  • What is Turge's history of starting Freshmen?

  • Glad you asked. He's started many of his freshman in the past most recently Khris Middleton a SF who declared for the draft. Hell if Gary was coaching Faust probably would have played possibly 10 minutes a game. Do your research before you downvote. If you gonna take heat as a coach it will be with your players not playerss from the last regime. This is a new coach not necessary obligated to every player he inherits.

  • I get the feeling that Seth Allen is gonna be that guy everyone else in the ACC is like, "Holy shit that guy is only a JUNIOR?!? I feel like he's been at Maryland for 6 years."

I just think he's gonna play a lot early on and hopefully be our starting PG his junior and senior year after Stogs and Andrew Harrison are gone.

You're right, Gary would have shown SR loyalty to Jonathan Thomas by playing him all those minutes Faust got.

People really need to stop expecting such huge contributions from Shaq and especially Mitchell right away. They'll be good in time, but by and large big men take at least a year to develop. If we got 6 and 4 out of both this season we should be happy.

Faust is a terrible example. Had Gary been here last year with the same scenario there is little doubt Faust would have gotten major run.

Jordan Williams, Steve Blake, GV, Eric Hayes...just few examples of freshman who started or played a lot under Gary.

I agree that expectations for the big men are too high, but I do think that Shaq will more than hold his own with the ACC bigs next year. He will come in as one of the strongest and most physical players in the league, my biggest question on him is how many minutes is he going to be able to play? He looks like he could use a little conditioning.

Overall, I think we'll see a lot of different starting lineups throughout the year as players develop and Turge feels the team out. The only players I'd put money on starting every game that they play would be Stogs and Faust.

  • I'm not sure where this myth came from that Turgeon just tosses his seniors aside. If you don't think Padgett, a senior from Brooklyn, isn't starting the Kentucky game then I don't know what to tell you.

  • If Len and Padgett are not starting every game given health and eligibility then we are not going to be anything more than a bubble team.

Those two not starting means they made no progress in len's case or in padges case regressed.

I see Padge blowing up this year, based solely on the level of competition an physicality he will be facing in practice on a daily basis.

  • I'll take the idiot compliment Archer. Thanks, but I'm a realist. Padgett is a serviceable backup to do dirty work and use of fouls. His hands aren't the greatest and he's a pump fake machine. To be an undersize 4 you need athleticism and a consistent face up jumpshoot in which he possesses neither. Not saying Shaq will come in and average a double double, but let's face it how many post players last year average 10 and 7. exactly none. I think that's attainable for Shaq just on his aggression 5 feet and in alone. Not many opposing centers in the ACC.
