If there is a God, K will pull a Paterno and keep coaching until he's almost dead and will drag that program into mediocrity. And then Maryland fans can smugly go over to the Duke boards and tell them not to complain and put up with .500 seasons because of all K has done for the program.

Frankly, I see Duke in the same boat as Maryland. College basketball is all about the coach, and finding a great coach is a crapshoot. We really hadn't done anything until we stumbled upon someone who turned out to be possibly the greatest coach of all time.

I'm old enough to remember Duke before Coach K. Duke's success is based on one coach, not it's status as a "program." I'll believe Duke's a real "program" when we win titles under more than one coach. UK, UCLA, Kansas, UNC are different. They have different advantages that Duke doesn't have. Maybe we'll still be good after Coach K retires, but it's a crapshoot.

And yes, I believe it's extremely hard to win a national championship, and you're blessed if you find a coach that takes you to one. The magnitude of Coach K's and Gary Williams' success may be different, but the story line is similar.

And I'll be there with you telling them not to complain.

There's zero chance Coach K hangs around too long. More likely he retires sooner than expected and Duke hires its version of Matt Doherty, only there's no Roy Williams to come save the program when that doesn't work out.

I'm fully aware that we're a small school with a small gym that has the potential to drop into oblivion when Coach K retires. Duke isn't built for long-term athletics success. Old school Duke fans are the luckiest people on the planet.

I will preface my post by saying that this list is depressing and highlights our lack of success during that timeframe. That being said, I'm sure every team on this list who didn't win a championship would gladly trade all of their sweet 16's for our natty. And secondly, if I may play the dreaded "what if" game, if that Michigan St. desperation 3 doesn't go, we're pounding Northern Iowa and heading to the elite 8 in GV's senior season. Many of these teams needed the right break to get in....our break found the bottom of the opponent's net.
