Nah, I think VT missed the boat on that one.

  • I have always hated seth greenberg. he recruits and has a bunch of thugs on his team.

He couldn't spell class if you spotted him 4 letters.

I hope Huggins gives him a job pushing a broom on the court or something in Morgantown so the fans can heckle him.

  • Here's a scary thought: You could make a pretty convincing case, given the conference he coached in, that Seth Greenberg is the best coach in Virginia Tech basketball history. He's pretty clearly no worse than second-best.

Obviously the postseason success wasn't there, but I think five years from now people are going to realize just how good Greenberg was doing at VT, all things considered. Trying to recruit to Blacksburg to play at a football-first school with no basketball tradition in Cassell Coliseum is a damn near impossible task.

Virginia Tech was very enthusiastic about firing Seth Greenberg | The Dagger: College Basketball Blog - Yahoo! Sports

From the blog The Dagger: College Basketball Blog: Seth Greenberg may be the first coach in college basketball history to learn he was being fired in all-caps. Virginia Tech gleefully announced at noon on the front of its athletics website in giant bold orange lettering that it would … Continue reading →

  • Unless there was something shocking going on, I do think he should have been told before the university scheduled a news conference and had to be asked about it by the media.

Pleased to meet you; hope you guess my name.

  • It's also clear that SG was essentially Friedgened: fired because his assistants were leaving and the AD didn't think it was worth it to put one year's worth of lipstick on the pig.

I wonder why all the assistants left for arguably lower profile positions. I also wonder why Weaver didn't talk to him over the weekend and make the exit a little more graceful for SG. Right or wrong, unless something happened that we don't know about, this was handled pretty poorly.

I know, I know, it couldn't have happened to a better guy.

It's a totally different situation to rebuild a staff and hold onto a guy for one year (us with Friedgen) and to rebuild a staff and hold onto a guy for four years (VT with Greenberg). Although if you're not happy with the guy, it definitely makes it a lot easier to cut him loose when you're so close to starting over already.

I actually agree, but it seems that Weaver sees this as similar in the way Weaver describes Greenberg's lame duck status.

I would have just dealt with whatever until next March. Are they going to really get the guy they want right now?

WVU had Beilein for years before Huggins. And Huggins has turned over a new leaf. He had a few academic all americans at WVU.

Harrell going to UVa would be such a Maryland sequence of events.

Wait, Because he signed a LOI, if Harrell goes to another ACC school, doesn't he have to sit a year and lose that year of eligibility (see Gus Gilchrist). Dumb ACC rule, right? Or do I remember that scenario incorrectly?

If I am right, he will stay at VT or be in another conference then. No way this kid sits a year.

  • I didn't like him, but he was a pretty decent coach. He did have a good record against #1 teams over a stretch and had competitive teams. Too bad he had to rely on Jeff Allen for four years.

That was his problem-the better a player, the more greenberg let him get away with. no discipline.

Which is why he never won anything and ended up being fired for being what he is-a loser.

A lot of coaches recruit questionable players, but the good ones control them and are strong on discipline.

He also oozed slime. Weaver said he had a workshop and 182 fulltime members of the athletic dept attended. But he noted Greenberg did not.And he said he made his mind up at that point.
I think greenberg thought he was too good to go to the Hokie workshop. He likely did not consider himself part of and subordinate to the AD. When you win just 4 games in your conference you damn sure better attend things that the AD holds dear-like his workshop.

I'm all for Greenberg bashing, but how does anything you said support the claim that he's dirty? And how does a Bob Huggins fan call any other coach in America dirty?

  • Any chance Tech looks at Prosser? It's always amazing to me that guy never got a look at another job after being fired at Wake.

    CuseTerp

  • I think the VT AD screwed up. If you look at the timing, clearly he was blindsided by assistant James Johnson leaving for Clemson. He obviously wasn't on top of the state of the program. If Weaver knew Greenberg had such terrible relationships with everyone, it would've made sense to pull the trigger after the ACC tourney loss. Instead we end up trying to make a hire during recruiting evaluations at the end of April. VT can be a tough job, but Weaver just made it worse and increased the likelihood we'll be searching for a new coach in 4 years or so, which will really dagger the program.

Only if VT blocks and given all of the negative attention blocking transfers has received in the past year I'd be shocked if VT blocked him and even if they did I doubt they'd enforce the two year rule.

If only twitter was around (or as popular as it is now) back when Gus was here.

  • I've posted this before, but I coincidentally went to Seth Greenberg's first game back in 2003. It was an afternoon/early evening game I think that occured after a noon football game against BC when they were contending for the Big East title so Lane Stadium was full. Kevin Jones went nutso but BC won and crushed the Hokie title hopes.

It was the first regular season game against New Hampshire and they won easily. Attendence was 5,984 according to the box score I found on Yahoo sports but I'd be surprised if there were 2000 people there when there were 70,000 next door not an hour or two prior.
