3 years from now Painter leaves or gets fired. He looks to be going down the path of Bruce Weber.

    Funny, both Keady guys.

Serious question- what schools do you tend to go head to head with recruits?

Wouldn't you imagine Georgetown and UVA?

Maybe but those schools don't scream national powers to me. If Maryland is going to come into the conference with a ton of steam then I imagine their recruiting battles with other schools with be with the elite also.

I'm sure others more knowledgeable about recruiting could better answer it but I'll try. Recruiting dropped off quite a but near the end of Gary Williams' tenure but has picked up again with a staff strongly leveraged in DC/Bmore, with the top asst from New England and ties to Texas from being at A&M. Our PG next year was being recruited by Kansas, Layman (freshman) I believe had offers from Florida and maybe Syracuse. Georgetown will try unsuccessfully to battle us for local players over the next few years. Syracuse and Indiana are a presence in the DC/Bmore area. Obviously we tried to go head to head with Kentucky for the Harrison twins. I'd guess that we'll have a strong local focus while pulling recruits from other regions of the country occasionally. As the coaching staff becomes more entrenched (and we hopefully do some winning soon), I suspect the level of recruit we pull will improve. Maryland has a high ceiling which we've admittedly not been close to in a while, we're looking to compete with the elite of the conference, forget about this Purdue stuff.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

  • We will run shit. Have fun beating us in the football every fall because we're going to make Izzo cry like the bitch that he is.

Fair enough- I wouldn't want to be compared with Purdue either. I'm curious to see how east coast expansion opens up new recruiting grounds and Maryland having access to the Midwest will work long term. It should be win- win. Tons of talent in both regions and if BTN opens up NYC and Jersey then the conference should shit talent for just about all the powers.

    Until this year (kidding).

Just saying, Thad Matta's record isn't a small thing. It's the best win percentage in the Big Ten since he took over (for conf games).

If you're striving to match him, then you're striving to be the best, which is a good thing.

Izzo has the best tourney record during his career...and it ain't close ;)

Yeah, there's a good chance there will be a more recent winner by the team we join up. I don't think anyone is downplaying what Matta has done. He's been very good. Just as you say, we want to be very good to great and have the history/ceiling to make it happen. Izzo-like tourney magic would be cool, too.

MSU best teams like to run but all of them learn how to play diverse styles which I think is key in the tourney. I despise Wisconsin's style of play but I'm glad they are there. Sometimes you might be in a game where you have to play like that so it's better to be prepared.

I should hate him because of those disgusting tourney losses in '03 and '10 but he's damn good. As an outsider, I think you know MSU will always be physical, near the top of the nation in rebounding, well-coached and have some tough-minded kids.

  • These big 10 games with the top 4, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan and Ohio State playing each other are superb. I picked OSU to upset Indiana tonight, and I think all 4 teams are legit final 4 contenders, but OSU needs one more consitent scorer
Big 10 is stacked with great Coahes.
Crean, Matta, Izzo, Beilein, Ryan, Tubby,Painter.
