Orioles vs. Rays series thread

  • fearthenoodle said...

In addition to previewing this series, I want to make sure we laugh at the Red Sox the appropriate amount in this thread as well.

    Josh Beckett has chosen sides......

I always hated Beckett. Pedroia and Paplebon for the way they carried themselves.

Beckett was a feel-good story with the '03 Marlins, but he's always come off as an a-hole to me with the Red Sox. I need two hands to count the number of time I've seen him arguing with BATTERS (and that's just when I happened to see him). When he doesn't get those strikes 2-3 inches off the corner, the O's have been able to hit him pretty consistently. When he didn't get those calls, he was quick to pout.

I don't know if it's true, but people said that he started to become more arrogant when he'd go back home to Texas and hang with Roger Clemens.

  • I don't hate Roberts. He sounds like a mostly good guy other than the steroid cheating. And I don't blame him for taking the conservative medical advice regarding the concussion. It is his brain. However, I do think the odds of a successful comeback are pretty limited and think he is lying to himself if he really expects to play again at a high level. He is 34 and hasn't played a full season since he was 31. If the concussion symptoms are lingering this far out then I think he should just call it a day so everyone can move on. I'm guessing the Duke already has given the Tejada news, but the fans need to move on as should Roberts.

But hey, if he miraculously recovers suddenly and returns to the 2008 level that would be awesome. Love to have the old BRob at the top of the lineup.

As for Oswalt, he is solid but I wonder how he would transfer into the AL East. I wouldn't expect too much.

  • DD has said multiple times that if the O's are in it in July, they'll be "in it to win it" which kind of scares me.

BTW, i'd be down with going after youkilis if we're in it at the deadline. FA next year. i hate that asshole but there's very limited options out there at 3B and the sox might be OK parting with him for (relatively) cheap.

I don't think DD will "gut" the system for a run, but it is way too early to make deadline predictions. If we are 66-42 at the deadline, with Tampa at 62, NY at 60, Toronto(representing the last team out) at 58 and we dont make some moves, ill be mad. If we have a rotation of Britton, Hammel, Arrieta, Chen, Matusz and a 2+ game lead on Toronto/Chicago/Cleveland/Oakland/Seattle for the last spot, would you not want to make a run for the last ~55 games? Why not? As long as A. We don't give up Bundy/Machado and B. Its not a rental. Go get Oswalt now and Wright at the deadline if were still at the top of the table.

Give us your David Wright trade proposal.

Not only does our offer have to be acceptable to the Metropolitans, but it has to be better than everyone else's. I'd be shocked if we could make the best offer for Wright.

  • I really would prefer to not to deal Schoop/Hoes/Delmonico/Bridwell/Avery for a 2-3 month rental, and probably not even for an elite player. It would be great to get Wright, but I would want him signed long-term. I also have major concerns about his durability. Obviously too early to figure it all out, but I don't see that many teams selling and those teams with that many great players to trade.

  • @mlbtrben
Surprising that the Orioles have more homers (50) than any other MLB team. They have seven players with 5+ HR.

I do think he won't be afraid to wheel and deal. I do think he's smart enough not to trade the keys to the future to make it happen.

  • Avery, who has been one of my favorite prospects ever since he was drafted, is playing himself into a nice trade chip if need be.

I think Machado and Bundy are untouchable. I'm fine giving anyone else up as long as it's not a 2 month rental and it's not a turd.

  • Before last season the fewest games Wright had played in a season was 144. I think the injury concerns are overblown.

    Schoop/Avery/Bridwell

Wait, what? We are giving up all three of those guys just for two months of Wright???

  • First off, Wright isn't a 2 month rental. He is a 14 month rental at worst. Second, his price is still volatile. He hasn't put up an elite season in a few years. If he continues this season as is, his price might be too high. Also, a lot depends on where the Mets are sitting come July. If they are way out of it, and he slows down a bit, Schoop/Bridwell could be the center. They will be paying him 16MM next year. While they would certainly exercise the option, I believe they would rather not pay it unless they want to resign him. I would also want to try to negotiate an extension.

Pretty sure it would be contingent on an extension.

He has a club option in 2013 and hopefully you'd get a window to extend though I doubt that.

It's not even that great of a deal for the Mets. A fringe top 50 prospect depending on who you talk to and two guys who aren't even in the top 100.

    jsh

  • O's could easily finish with 6 guys with 20 or more bombs. You would think Hardy, Wieters, Jones are locks. Reynolds should get there despite his slow start, and Davis should as well. Markakis could reach that mark, and Reimold and Betemit are possibilities depending on how much playing time they receive.

Say what you will about him, but he's now "on pace" for 25 homers this year. In fact, the Orioles have 7 guys on pace for 25 homers, and Mark Reynolds is not one of them.

I thought I heard his club option disappears if he is dealt? I'm a big Schoop guy. Don't care as much about Bridwell or Avery, but it scares me to clear out 3 of our top 10 prospects in a system lacking them.

    charmcity3131

  • Do you really think Schoop/Bridwell/Avery is some ridiculous package of prospects for a 3b in his late 20's with an 8war season under his belt? I'd prefer to keep Avery, but we would have to at least match his value. Schoop would 99% have to be part of the deal.

  • if traded, Wright may void 2013 club option

    Key word is "may".

  • Does anyone else notice how Markakis home run swing looks way different than his other swings? He has this little hitch or hop step thing he does when he locks onto a pitch and lets it fly down the right field line. I wish he did that more often. It's like he will show you flashes of the guy he could have been.

    charmcity3131

  • I'd prefer not to give up schoop. I think he has as much if not more upside than Machado at least with the bat.

    Pic Sigs are for losers.
