Orioles vs. Rangers series thread

  • He would be very solid and probably wouldn't cost too much. I think at some point they need to make a big free agency push if they believe they can win around the core of this team, and if the season continues in this fashion and we end up at .500 or better ( a lot of ifs), we need to spend some money in free agency. Then again, we also need to be locking up Wieters and Jones and maybe even a couple other guys too.

  • In general, I still think I'd rather spend big money on offense, rather than pitching. The exception being truly elite pitching. Greinke probably qualifies, but I'm not sure I'm 100% sold on giving him what it would take to get him.

  • If we're going to go after an elite SP I'd prefer Mr. Old School Cole Hamels over Grienke. I don't think that's realistic though and I don't think it'd be a smart decision by the Orioles. The guy I've wanted since about February is Anibal Sanchez. He'll likely be the Edwin Jackson of next offseason though he's gotten off to a terrific start so far this season.

Agreed. In a perfect world, the Mets decline their option on David Wright and Duquette swoops in and signs him.

  • Next year is potentially a fairly deep pitching class in FA. Hamels, Greinke, McCarthy, Anibal Sanchez, Marcum, EJax.

Then the guys with options that may or may not be picked up- Floyd, Haren, Santana, Shields

    fearthenoodle

  • Wright would be awesome provided he can stay healthy and wouldn't cost a crazy amount. It would fill a huge hole. I generally agree we should pay for bats and not pitchers but I think Greinke is close to elite and it's worth spending on top guys. Provided Bundy is up fairly soon and Hammel is the real deal, we might not even really need more than one pitcher so long as it is a top guy. I like Haren a lot but assume his option will be picked up.

  • A good post from drungohazewood on OH to try and calm some of the panic monkeys.

The 1989 Why Not? O's were...

    1. Shut out 15 times
    2. Lost games by scores of 16-5, 13-5, 11-5, 11-1, 11-1, 11-0, 10-0, 9-0 during that year
    3. Lost by 5 or more 23 times
    4. Went 1-13 during a stretch from late July through early August
    5. Were 13-17 on this date in 1989

The Angels have a lot of decisions to make. They have $42M tied up in Vernon Wells for 2013-14. They already extended Weaver ($16M in 2013/14, 18M 2015, 20M 2016). They still owe $228M to Pujols AFTER this year (though only $16M in 2013). They owe $68M to CJ Wilson after this year ($11M in 2013). They just signed Aybar ($8.5M/yr) and Kendrick ($9M in 2013) to extensions.

So they have $82M tied up in those 6 guys. They have to decide on Haren ($15.5M) and Santana ($13M). I doubt they pick up both options.

  • They must be kicking themselves over the Wells deal. For only $2.5 more, I think they'd be silly not to pick up Haren over Santana but who knows.

Remember, they traded Mike Napoli for Vernon Wells. That's why they were in the market for a new GM this offseason.

  • And the Blue Jays traded Napoli for Frank Francisco. fingergun

  • i'd go hard after hamels this offseason. he's been an absolute horse for philadelphia. lots of swings and misses and he keeps the ball in the park.

AlphaOmega said... im sorry i was confusing...your "Superbowl" was the Redskins losing since you know that the Ravens cant win it all.

  • Hamels would be my number one target though I think he's bound for LA. Sanchez, McCarthy, Jackson would be the next tier for me. No thanks on Grienke.

    Eh only really last year.

Historically, he's always given up a ton of hr

I just embarrassed myself with this post

  • wonder how many years Hamilton will get? I assume the absurd Fielder/Pujols variety ...

amazing player. He is 31 now, but his body is more like 36 given the injuries and the drug addiction.

    BCiB

  • count me in the "don't touch hamilton in FA" group. his contract will be way too long and too expensive.

  • Anything over 3 years is probably irresponsible to give to Hamilton. That being said, he'll get a 6-year deal, minimum.

    fearthenoodle

  • the O's are second in Isolated Power (measures extra bases per at bat) and 3rd in HRs, just 2 back of the yankees and 1 back of the rangers. The team walk rate is slowly increasing while the team K rate slowly decreases. All good signs.

  • Would be nice to have a leadoff hitter who could get on base while Reimold is out. JJ Hardy has 6 solo HRs this year.

  • on the other hand, our FIP and expected FIP are rising very quickly.

  • Wow two awful trades involving Wells and Napoli. That's nuts, although no one really could have predicted this from Napoli. Hamilton thinks he is worth around $200 million. My guess is he settles for 7 years, $160 or something like that. I wonder if Pujols deal and subsequent struggles with give teams pause when it comes to Hamilton. There is still usually that one team that doesn't care and wants to make the splash anyway.

  • BTW I got the crab mac n cheese dog from Stuggy's last night and paired it with the Fordham Copperhead Ale....had some good flavors, a solid option for $8. Don't expect it to fill you up, but definitely worth the extra $3.50 or whatever over a regular hot dog.

Napoli had hit 26 HR his last year in Anaheim. Last year was probably a career year that he'll never match but the worst OPS he's put up in the majors .784. He's an interesting option the O's could go after on the FA market.

If we're going to get blown out in a series, at least it's to Texas, a series we all knew deep down would be a tough get. It's baseball - this happens from time to time throughout the year. At least it's not Seattle or Chicago or another team of that caliber blowing our doors off.

Yup. I'd rather get killed by Texas than an AL East team.

I love that Chris Davis is listed under our pitching stats, complete with FIP (2.44) and xFIP (3.13). lol

I'm still very happy with the pitching staff if all the pitchers regress towards their FIP/xFIP numbers.
