Orioles vs. Braves series thread

If Reimold is not going to come back this year (he had another MRI yesterday), then I think it is worth it. "Holding our own" is fine, but LF is still a big hole if Reimold is out.

    I like this line-up/bench possibility:

2B Roberts SS Hardy RF Markakis CF Jones C Wieters DH Davis 1B Reynolds LF Soriano 3B Betemit

Bench: UTIL Andino, DH/1B Johnson, OF Chavez, C Paulino

that lineup is easily one of the best in baseball. the great thing about it is that we have a bunch of guys who are notorious for going on absolute tears at any moment. we can easily get by with a few guys slumping, too.

  • and yea, avery is not the LF of the future. i'm not sure he will ever be a productive everyday player.

  • Another reason that "holding our own" right now isn't good enough is that the rest of the division is going to be getting better, too. Longoria is starting his rehab for TB. The Yankees are going to get Gardner back. The Red Sox have Ross, Ellsbury and Crawford coming back. And the Sox/Yankees are certainly not going to hesitate to make deadline deals.

So while it's nice that Markakis is coming back soon, and hopefully Britton/Lindstrom also, if they truly want to be "in it to win it" like DD said a while back, they need to be aggressive, and anybody outside of the 2 stars of the future are fair game.

    fearthenoodle

  • TB, by the way, put Luke Scott on the DL with a back problem yesterday.

  • Avery's speed element is an important aspect since it's something we really lack at the major league level. He could also move to center, moving Jones to left.

I want to make the playoffs this year, but we need to be careful not to give up some decent prospects in a system that is already really top heavy. This is especially true when talking about trading for a 36-year old player who is really streaky and a pitcher who is only under control for one more year.

    charmcity3131

  • a starting pitcher is clearly priority #1. i'm not THAT worried about LF.

  • Speed is over-rated.

    fearthenoodle

  • Of course you give up "decent" prospects if you have to. Just don't give up "can't miss" prospects.

    fearthenoodle

  • people greatly overvalue speed in baseball and GMs certainly will overpay for it.

you don't need team speed to score runs. Exhibits A, B, C: Baltimore, New York, Boston.

Then why are the Yankees going to be getting better with Gardner's return? It's not overrated. It's terribly distracting to pitchers when guys with speed get on base. It can cause havoc on the basepaths, forcing infielders to make poor throws, etc. It also generally helps your defense as well to have quick guys out there in the field.

No question, the saying for years has been you're not going to steal a pennant. I think that's especially true in the AL East.

Ummm, because Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez are old, terrible outfielders?

    fearthenoodle

  • Red Sox, Yankees, Orioles are ranked 2, 8 and 10 respectively in MLB in runs scored. They are last, 25th and last in stolen bases, respectively.

lol, way to use 1 player to make your argument against something that has been proven based upon historical data

Is there even any talk of Jones moving to left? I can't imagine this happening.

  • People seem to forget that most, including BA, BP and KLaw, have LJ Hoes as a better prospect than Avery.

yeah that was my point, you dont need to steal bases if you hit homeruns. and o's sox and yanks probably all top 10 in slugging

Hoes is another one that I'd be willing to trade- take your pick.

I mean, MAYBE if they were to acquire another STUD CF. But the chances of Jones moving to LF for Xavier Avery? Less than zero.
