Orioles vs. Athletics series thread

  • I'll never understand trading position players for relievers. That's how we got Reynolds and Hardy. And look at what Boston did last offseason.

Josh Reddick (22 HRs, .881 OPS) for Andrew Bailey (yet to pitch).
Jed Lowrie (14 HRs, .799 OPS) for Mark Melancon (0-2, 7.29 ERA).

I am always, always in favor of trading relievers for SPs or position players, even a guy like Strop. But I probably wouldn't trade Strop in-season this year unless I was blown away. If they want to stay in the race, keeping the back end of the bullpen together is important.

I like Strop but you cannot get something for nothing. Wondering if some would value his arm now to be near closer after how he has pitches this year and packaged with Matusz and say Schoop (Don't like that) or a Hoes or Avery what that might return.

  • Maybe I missed this, but what are thoughts on Liriano? He's only 28, still averages almost 10 k's per 9 IP, and is under control through next year. A guy who just needs a change of scenery? Or a Dontrelle Willis, getting ready to flame out before age 30?

That is not always true, as evidenced by the JJ Hardy trade.

Liriano is a FA after this season.

  • My bad, when I read 2013 I thought that meant after next year.

  • That being said, if you aren't giving up anything significant, or if you could get Liriano/Span as a combo, I'd be listening. The Orioles are apparently in on Liriano so I'm definitely curious.

I would take a run at him in the offseason, depending upon how much he costs. I still believe hitting is where we need to throw a lot of our resources right now. I'd also look to extend Hammel, hoping that his injury might make him a bit cheaper.

I like the Liriano/Span idea a lot, that guy looks to be a good player and I think is under contract at a reasonable value.

I agree with this. The pitching seems to keep the team in MOST games and the bullpen has be stellar. But when you consistently have your 1st and 3rd baseman hitting in the bottom third of the order, more often that not you are going to be at deficit offensively against a quality opponent.

  • I think hitting and pitching are equal priorities in the offseason.

Here's the issue with pitching....how long a leash do you give the guys in the "cavalry?" What do Tillman and Britton need to do to prove they belong (Britton gets a spot next year pretty much regardless I think). When do you completely give up on Arietta and Matusz?

Hitting? We simply don't even have any young talent other than Jones who is coming into his own and Wieters who seems to be settling in as a .750 hitter unfortunately. There is a MUCH greater chance of our pitching turning around organically than our hitting. That being said, I suppose I can envision a scenario where Reimold solves our problem at LF and Schoop at 2B still leaving us with a gaping hole at 1B and 3B.

  • how much importance to these 3 games have in the Duke's decision making? Os are a game behind the As. Lose all 3 and cannot see the logic in being any kind of material buyer (Greinke, etc.). Win the first two and how much does that change things?

the other factor, of course, is that it is July 27th. Can DD wait until the 3 games are player before making a decision?

It's a bit of a tightrope, no question. You don't want to sweep 3 and decide you're serious buyers, only to find the guys you were targeting are no longer available.

  • I think DD pulls the trigger on anything that makes sense as soon as that deal is on the table. If they do lose 3 games though, he may pull back from certain deals come Monday.

Wasn't Keith Law tweeting all last season about how Reddick and Lowrie were not major league hitters?

As for the Duke, I think today's game is meaningful in his decision making progress. These deals will likely get done over the weekend. i.e., tomorrow.

  • I would highly caution against making any decisions based off of a three-game series. Buyers or not, we should already know what we are at this point.

I really want that floppy hat as well but can't seem to find anyone in town that wants to go. A ton of people I know are at the beach this week.

    charmcity3131

  • I think it's a little silly to play 100 games and let the 100th be the deciding factor on whether or not to make trades. I don't expect DD to make any deal that would compromise the future of the team regardless of how this series goes. But I think he'll try to improve the team.

The Orioles somewhat control their own destiny with the 2nd wildcard. After tonight, they'll still have 5 more vs. Oakland, a 4-game homestand vs. CHW, 3 games in Detroit (who I expect to pull away in the Central soon), 9 with TB, 9 with Boston (6 home) and 9 with Toronto (6 home).

  • If Minnesota eats some salary, what are the thoughts on Justin Morneau? .926 OPS vs. RHP. Platoon with Reynolds at 1B?
