Orioles at Rays series thread

I was willing to write off Chavez's first month as him trying to play hurt. But he doesn't look any better now.

It sounds like Jones is fine after getting hit last night, but if he had to miss a game, the starting OF tomorrow night could be LF Betemit CF Chavez RF Flaherty.

    pukeface

I'll take Matty, Jesus and Felipe Alou right now over that outfield, and Matty has been dead since November so his range and Betemit's are about the same

I was actually thinking that right now Brady Anderson might be a better option than Chavez. Seriously.

A week ago I had a post written that I deleted before hitting send that asked the same thing about Avery.....

Until I realized he was 35, I thought the same thing.

It is when you are using FO personnel and/or coaches positioned in the stands or outside the field of play.

Basically what FTN said. A runner on second figuring out your signs isn't cheating, it's you being lazy.

Right, and I completely agree with both of you.

I just wanted to note that what is generally construed as stealing signs (someone on 2nd base), isn't.

That's all... I hadn't considered that they had execs out there relaying signs. That's pretty bush league if so.

He should have been ROY over Bobby Crosby. He was awesome and then just fell off the map.

    from a Twins site...

    Who Didn't Love Lew?

Below, a recap of the man and the myth:

One year, a contact-lens company introduced red lenses, which would supposedly help the wearer see the ball better. One day, Ron Gardenhire saw Ford standing in line in the dugout. When asked why, Ford said, "I'm waiting in line to try these contacts." Gardy, unsure of himself, pointed out, "Uh, Lew - you don't wear glasses." Ford looked pensive for a second, and then said, "Oh, yeah, right," and sprinted out onto the field.

Lew got 1,400 on his SATs, including 750 on the math section. He studied electrical engineering and computer science on his collegiate journey. He went to Texas A&M on a scholarship - an academic scholarship - then left when he didn't make the baseball team as a walk-on. Four colleges later, he got drafted by the Red Sox.

Gardy once happened to dine in the same restaurant as Lew, who was eating with a few guys Gardy didn't know. The manager went over to introduce himself, and asked who the other guys were. Said Lew, "Oh, these are some guys I met playing World of Warcraft on the internet."

He once missed a chance at pinch-running in Anaheim because, when Matthew LeCroy came to get him from the clubhouse, Lew put his shoes on and ran the wrong way out of the clubhouse.

Upon being told he was going to Portland, the Twins' old AAA affiliate in Oregon, he said, "Why am I going to Portland? That's in Maine."

Whatever the stories, he insists he did not burn himself while attempting to iron a shirt while wearing it. He did, however, show up with an iron-shaped burn mark on one of his shirts, and you have to admit that the mythical while-wearing-it story does sound like Lew.

One year at spring training, Lew brought both his desktop and laptop computers with him - "because the desktop is more powerful and has a 19-inch flatscreen monitor," he said. But when the Twins started the season on the road, he couldn't figure out what to do with the computer, and had to bring it with him. "I could only bring like one change of clothes because I brought my computer," he said. "But I don't take the big one on every trip. You have to make sure to put that in there."

Catching Up With Lew Ford and Pat Neshek - Twinkie Town

The Twins have had some interesting characters - a look back at the goofiest, plus an update on one who's back in the minors.

  • Good news on one OF.

    @masnRoch
Told that Adam Jones is icing his left wrist and should be fine after being hit last night. Only thing broken was his 20-game hitting streak

    fearthenoodle

  • LOL outside of 3 players, the O's have nothing to help in the minors.

    RD52

  • I'll feel a lot better if we find a way to win this series.

  • just chiming in to say that this has been a pretty bad week.

Miggy and Britton to the rescue.

    BCiB

  • Been rough, but 2 of 3 will cure all.

    GunnerOne 84

  • Since the 17-inning game:

    Betemit .192/.270/.359/.629, 4 HR 10 RBIs
    Avery .217/.299/.317/.615, 0 HR, 4 RBIs
    Andino .195/.263/.264/.528, 1 HR 4 RBIs
    Wieters .127/.232/.197/.426, 1 HR 4 RBIs

That's just about half the everyday line-up since then being just about completely worthless.

  • Starting pitching has received plenty of blame, and they certainly haven't been great. But I think they've pitched well enough to give the team a chance to win 3 of the 5 games during this losing streak.

    fearthenoodle

  • Orioles record by starting pitcher:
    Eveland 1-0
    Hammel 7-3
    Chen 6-3
    Hunter 6-4
    Matusz 5-5
    Arrieta 4-7

  • If we are witnessing the beginning of the end I'm going to look back at that Saturday KC game the same way I look at the BJ Ryan/Ortiz HR game from 2005.

Those aren't even remotely similar for me.

    fearthenoodle

  • 1. Royals are not the hated Red Sox.
    2. Walk HR off closer not the same as a few breaks going the Royals way on Saturday.
    3. There is no chance that in 7 years I vividly remember a 4-3 loss to KC the way I can still picture exactly where I was when Ortiz hit that HR.

    fearthenoodle

  • The Ryan game was more dramatic, and about a month later, but to me they both represent the peak of the season (if this team continues its slide). Especially the off-field stuff last Saturday. At 6:00 or so on Saturday the Jones signing was imminient, there had been a crowd for the ages the night before, and a solid start plus a great bullpen was getting ready to win the series. Then poof.

    joebookman

  • The Ryan game was NOT a month later. It was on June 2nd.

That was in the middle of a stretch where they lost 6 of 8 after "peaking" at 30-16. Then after a brief 3-game winning streak, lost 4 of 5 again.

Even after that, they still got back to 41-27 by winning 5 of the next 6.

    fearthenoodle

  • Damn, for some reason I thought that game was closer to the ASB.

    joebookman

  • It's funny how you remember stuff, because I remember that game being the beginning of the end too. But in reality, it wasn't.

    fearthenoodle

  • It just seemed like last weekend the crescendo was building, with a great crowd Friday night, a blowout win Friday night (run differential!), the Jones contract, and finally, a 3 run lead mid way through Saturday's game. Maybe they'll turn it around, but right now that 3-0 lead feels like a turning point, both on and off the field.

If you don't lose 2 of 3 to the fucking royals or blow 2 run leads against the nats and sox back to back these losses to Toronto are no big deal. You just can't lose those type of games because you know you have tough series coming up.

From the finale in DC to the end of the last home stand we went 2-5 and lost 3 games where we held a 3 run lead. You could argue we should have won all 7, but definitely should have won at least 5. To lose the games we did the way we did simply can't happen.
