  • Just a quick catch-up for anyone who missed the flurry of activity over the weekend:

Thome, Steve Johnson, Miguel Gonzalez to the majors.
Avery, Matusz, Hunter to the minors.

Starters needed for Thursday and Friday in Anaheim, with the likely candidates Chris Tillman and Zach Britton to make those starts.

  • We need 2 out of 3 in Seattle. Hopefully we can get that with Hammel and Chen going.

I don't know what you mean, but it had the cadence of a joke.

  • Important series here. I'll be happy being 3-4 over these next two series and going in to the break 5 games over .500. Gotta take 2 out of 3 against Seattle. Safeco should be exactly what our pitching staff needs.

  • If we can somehow make it to the ASB and maintain this, I'm pretty happy:

    Anaheim 44-35 --
    Baltimore 42-36 --
    Boston 42-37 .5 GB
    Tampa Bay 41-38 1.5 GB
    Cleveland 40-38 2 GB
    Toronto 40-39 2.5 GB

  • Too bad Chen has to face King Felix. We are awful on the West Coast, but at least we have our two best pitchers going in this series (sadly probably our three best). We should take 2 of 3, and then if we can get one or two in LA, we will have weathered the storm somewhat.

  • Hammel and Chen should be pitching 4 of the last 7 before the ASB, barring something unforeseen.

And Tommy Hunter, Brian Matusz and Dana Eveland should be pitching zero. So there's that.

O's have had *some* success over the years vs. Felix. His 1.488 career WHIP vs. the Orioles is higher than vs. any other team in baseball that he has faced more than once.

  • Part of the problem, if you want to call it that, is that Hammel and Chen decided to have their worst starts of the season back to back during this stretch. If Hammel has that stinker in April but throws a 3 hitter last week, and Chen has that stinker in May but goes 7 IP with 2 ER last week the O's are still 42-36 but people are feeling a lot better about it.

    joebookman

  • The plan has pretty much been win Hammel/Chen starts and then win 1/3 from the other starters. So yeah, when those two have bad starts, it opens the door to a longer stretch of sucking.

It's why I think they need to trade for a starter asap.

LOL did you see the weekend series? We gave up like double digit hits every game, Safeco won't cure that. The one guy it'd help the most, Hunter, is in the minors now.

The biggest reason the park will help us? Because Hammel and Chen are pitching and not Matusz and Hunter. Though Arietta goes, so that'll be a fun game. That game might have the highest run total in Vegas yet. I'm guessing 11.5 if not 12.5.

It's more basic than just those 2 having bad starts....we are playing bad baseball right now, pretty much all around: offense, defense and starting pitching. We weren't in April/May.

    Wow you are miserable.

  • Opponents had 88 hits on the 6 game homestand. That's a ginormous number.

    Cleveland: -37 run differential

    Mariners: -30 run differential

    It was a 9-game homestand.

  • To cheer everyone up, Roy Firestone is providing comedic relief over at The Hangout. He is suggesting we might have to trade Patton and Strop as well as Reynolds and Davis to get back a decent return.

Edit to say that I'm sure teams like the Cubs, Brewers and Phillies are interested in Troy Patton and Mark Reynolds to help turn things around for them when parting with Garza, Greinke and Hamels.

That makes me terribly sad, but only because it shows just how awful the team we just lost 3 of 4 to at home really is. The Mariners are equally as bad, and their struggling offense and big ballpark bode well for our staff. Just trying to somehow forget that Cleveland series ever happened.

I thought that about Cleveland and their AAA lineup.

The M's have SOME talent, but no pitching. Plus we're flying out there on no travel day. The series is far from a gimme the way we're playing now and Safeco doesn't help when you're giving up hits all over the yard to scrub ass hitters.

The biggest "help" will be that Hammel and Chen are pitching.

Correct, should have said the last 6 games. The Nats series seems like 5 weeks ago.

I think Choo, Brantley, Cabrera and Kipnis are pretty good.
