  • Well, since you locked the other thread, I figure people may not see this post, which I thought would be helpful in consideration of the implications of signing Bourn or Lohse:

So, obviously one of the large factors with Bourn and Lohse is the loss of the first round pick. The Orioles pick 23rd. Let's look at pick #23 since 2000:

    2000 - David Espinosa
    2001 - John-Ford Griffin
    2002 - Jeff Francouer
    2003 - Richard Wood
    2004- Phil Hughes
    2005 - Jacoby Ellsbury
    2006 - Max Sapp
    2007 - Nick Schmidt
    2008 - Allan Dykstra
    2009 - Jared Mitchell
    2010 - Christian Yelich
    2011 - Alex Myer
    2012 - James Ramsey

I have no idea who the vast majority of these guys are. If we drop off the last two years to be fair, from 2000-2010, you have 3 guys who contributed to their teams and only one real star (Ellsbury)

Taken in this context, just go out and sign Bourn or Lohse. If we were picking in the teens it would be one thing. Chances are, pick #23 is never going to get a meaningful inning in Camden Yards

  • Also, you have Jurrjens listed under the payroll even though no contract has been signed yet, I believe

Its like 8 guys you've never heard of and Mike Trout and Matt Cain or something like that. I don't feel like it doing it because the Orioles don't have the 25th pick

Yeah, I left Jurrjens in there for now, based off the reported agreement. Will adjust if necessary.

The one thing you have to consider under the new CBA (and I'm not saying it should keep them from signing a Bourn or Lohse, just that it should be mentioned) is if you lose that pick, you also lose a significant portion of your bonus pool money that you can allot to all your draft picks. I think right now the Orioles bonus pool will be around $6M, and they'd lose about a 3rd of that by signing Bourn or Lohse.

Here's my thought process on the 23rd pick. Our farm system is basically Bundy and Gausman* and there's a chance both of them are on the major league club by September. Part of the reason we couldn't make a trade this offseason is because our system is so thin. I've heard all the arguments about the value of the draft pick vs. the value Bourn (or whoever) will give us but I think we do need to restock this organization with talent. There's a chance the 23rd pick ends up to be nothing but I'm hoping that between the 23rd pick, the lottery pick and our 2nd rounder we end up hitting on at least one player.

At the right price I'd be fine with Bourn because I see that as getting a player at below market value and that's worth losing the draft pick. Signing Lohse would be incredibly dumb when we could've just signed Saunders or Marcum or Jackson or a number of other pitchers who wouldn't have cost a draft pick.

*If you want to throw Schoop's name in there that's fine but he also could be out of the minors by the end of the season.

That's about right, slightly over 6M which is the smallest cap number among AL East teams.

  • I'm all for signing Bourn if the price is right. He can add a lot to the team. Great defense and speed. It also would allow us to shift Reimold to more of a DH role. This should keep him more healthy. I think our draft scouting has improved, but it really is a crap shoot in the 20s.

The current Yankees lineup is the least imposing its been in probably 20 yrs. The bottom third is below average to bad and if Ichiro's last year's Mariners version he's not good either.

What about a projected LHP and RHP O'S lineup?

What about a projected LHP and RHP O'S lineup?

I pulled everything from mlbdepthcharts, which I think is a GREAT resource. I'll make some minor adjustments to their Orioles projection, though. This is just a guess on my part:

    Baltimore Orioles
    RF Nick Markakis
    LF Nolan Reimold
    1B Chris Davis
    CF Adam Jones
    C Matt Wieters
    DH Wilson Betemit
    SS JJ Hardy
    3B Manny Machado
    2B Brian Roberts

I'm undecided on whether Canzler/Valencia/Pearce will truly get a lot of at-bats vs. LHP to start the year, or whether they'll just move Nolan to DH and give McLouth some early opportunities against certain LHP to see if he can hold his own (knowing that the defense is better with him on the field).

I do know that I want Reimold in the line-up every day and Betemit in the line-up every time a RHP is starting.

  • If I have this right, pretty much every spot is locked in with the exception of the 5th starter, the last two relief spots and the 4th man on the bench. Predictions for those four spots? I'd go with Britton, Hunter and McFarland, and Canzler.

    PECOTA!!

    Markakis - .284/.359/.434 Jones - .274/.322/.450 Machado - .249/.298/.406 Davis - .258/.313/.460 Hardy - .253/.305/.420 Roberts - .259/.333/.384 Wieters - .259/.330/.422

    Hammel - 4.49 ERA Chen - 4.20 Britton - 4.95 Tillman - 4.63 Gonzalez - 4.34

We won't be very good if these stats are close to accurate. Six almost everyday starters and not one with an OPS over .800 and all projected opening day starters with an ERA 4.20 and above. Those are 72 win stats.

I could be wrong, but I think PECOTA is typically on the conservative side.

  • You can pick basically any draft pick after like the top 5 or 10 or something and come up with a list of guys who majority weren't regular starters for more than a couple years. Its just how the draft works. Doesn't mean those picks don't have value to a club like the Orioles, who can't dick around in free agency like the Dodgers or Yankees.
