Orioles Offseason Thread 3.0

  • The other one devolved into a cesspool.

Can we keep all Angelos discussion away from this thread unless something happens or there's some media report? Thanks.

    Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal

Sources: Talks between #Orioles, #Braves over A. Jones are "nowhere." Braves will not trade one of top four young SPs for Jones.

Taking Jurrjens, Prado makes no sense for #Orioles unless they can get one of those four. Talks fluid, but no current momentum.

Good to see the O's have no interest in Jurrjens/Prado without getting a prospect back as well.

  • All posters welcome here!

    fearthenoodle

  • Please keep SABER-talk at a minimum though, so that posters do not feel alienated.

    fearthenoodle

  • Leave the BS from the other thread in the other thread. This thread is for RUMORS, transactions and talk about the future of the team.

    jsh

  • Yeah, it's good that our mod can do that. Thanks for setting out the groundrules and being mature about this new thread.

Also, for the record, there shall be no excessive Angelos bashing on here. So as to avoid the cesspool on the other thread.

  • I was being serious! Let's try and talk about ORIOLES BASEBALL here. FanFest is only 10 days away. Can't wait.

    fearthenoodle

  • I really just meant the SABER comment.

As for alex, don't know if that last line was a dig or not but the other thread turned into garbage. Maybe you enjoy threads where people bicker over whether or not they're a better fan because they either go to or don't go to Oriole games.

If you want to continue that discussion go to the other thread or PM me. I just want to try and keep this thread focused on the team, not the ownership since we can't do anything about them.

The Travesty That Is Fan Fest, BS sabermetrics, ridiculous discussions about trades and signings that will never happen, overrating O's prospects--it's all right here! In FTN's Incredibly Intelligent (and Separate) O's Thread!

Actually I started the thread and if you don't like it than please don't post in it.

It's cool that you guys don't like the owner or you hate reading "ridiculous discussions". If that's the case than don't read the thread. I personally think the O's threads on here are the best discussion of any of the message boards I've visited but that's just me.

We'll know when Papelbon blows his first save.

What are the other realistic trade destinations for Jones?

You seem to have an issue with ridiculousness. Maybe message boards aren't for you?

  • San Francisco? Washington would make sense but I think the O's would be very hesitant to trade him there because that's a huge PR disaster if our return doesn't pan out.

  • Washington would be a great fit but we would never make that deal. I can only imagine how furious fans would be if he went down there and played great and our return didn't pan out.

    hm. Define "excessive" ??

Anyway I join the ranks of the collosally underwhelmed by the FO moves so far this offseason. An AJ trade would have been huge, but at least I'm glad DD hasn't made a *bad* trade there. yet.

Desperate needs = leadoff hitter, 1 SP, 2B, and a CF if AJ is traded. Obvi the leadoff hitter could be either the 2B or the CF. And if we can't get the right deal for AJ with a pitcher in the group how about the CF/2B needs instead? I wouldn't mind trading an A+ center fielder for an A- replacement plus an A- second baseman, if minor league prospects are also included ? Or is that stupid?

They're not going to make a lot of big moves this offseason, Duquette has made that clear. I've said it before and others have said it but the front office hirings Duquette has made are far more important than any one FA.

As for Jones, the problem is he isn't an A+ CF. He's more of a B+ center, good but flawed. It seems like Duquette is trying to pry a prospect or two from Atlanta while also getting Jurrjens and/or Prado. I could do without Jurrjens or Prado, would prefer the prospects as I'm sure most here would.

I think part of the problem with trading Jones is that teams are becoming far more reluctant to trade their top prospects. Would people be happy if we traded Jones, who's become one of the faces of the franchise, for a prospect that ranks between 26-50 in the top 100 and another one that ranks between 51-75? I personally don't think we can get a top 25 prospect for Jones.

  • I have not been this excited about an Orioles GM since when they hired Wren or Thrift or Beattie or Flanagan or Macphail.

Cant wait until we start to compete in 3-5 years!!!

    redraven1

  • Well, at least we won't be signing Saunders.

    @Ken_Rosenthal
Sources: Saunders receiving one-year and multi-year offers. Three-year deal possible. #Tigers, #Marlins among logical fits.

Probably. I guess I'll head back to the Premium board now. There's only so much time I can waste...

    terrapinsane

  • Anyone who signs Saunders to a 3 year deal should be fired. Can't believe one good year in the desert and a bunch of mediocre years in the AL West are going to get him 3 years.

Does SF have anything to offer?

With Bill Bavasi and Ed Wade gone, there aren't many sucker GM's left to swindle.

  • To be honest I don't know. Brandon Belt could be an option but I'd want more. Doubt they'd part with one of their pitchers and I don't think they have much in the farm system.

In the end, if WAS is not likely a trade partner, SF doesn't have much to offer, and there aren't many other likely landing spots, we're not going to see ATL up their offer. Would be nice to land one of their four pitching prospects but Frank Wren doesn't seem desperate.
