Orioles Offseason Thread

The O's haven't passed any tests w/regards to the bullpen until they make it through the whole off-season without offering $4+ million to somebody.

Does taking Koji back on a one year deal count?

  • Mike Bordick has made it clear to Orioles manager Buck Showalter that he'd accept an offer to join the coaching staff. He's also met with Dan Duquette, the new executive vice president of baseball operations.

We should find out later this week whether it leads to a change in roles for Bordick, the former Orioles shortstop who currently serves as their coordinator of offensive fundamentals.

  • Melewski adds up the numbers on draft picks over the years.

I went back and added up the number of picks in the first three rounds that AL East clubs had during Jordan's tenure with Baltimore from 2005 through last June's draft. Here are the numbers:

    36 - Boston & Toronto
    34 - Tampa Bay
    21 - New York
    20 - Baltimore

    ------------

The draft is a numbers game and the more high picks you have, the more top talent you are likely to add. Here are the number of top three round picks in the AL East in the 2010 and 2011 drafts alone:

    19 - Tampa Bay
    17 - Toronto
    11 - Boston
    6 - New York
    5 - Baltimore

  • That's terrible, but is that really on Jordan? I mean, he's not the one that threw away picks on bad FA signings.

    bkmalik

  • It's not on Jordan. Melewski goes on to say that, despite the quoted part in the link.

No matter how you feel about Joe Jordan's record as the Orioles' scouting director from 2005 through 2011, there is one area that hurt the Orioles during his time with the club that was out of the control of the scouting department.

  • No that's in defense of Jordan. Macphail was awful. The numbers are slightly skewed by the fact we haven't let go a ton of desirable free agents but neither have the jays and look at all them picks

I've been beating this drum FOREVER.... Compensatory picks are huge for developing a farm system. Michael Bowden, Clay Buchholz, and Jed Lowrie were all compensatory picks for Red Sox (out of players on 40 man roster). And I know Jordan Zimmermann was a compensatory pick for Alfonso Soriano. Mike Montgomery was a pick that the Royals got for losing DAVID RISKE!!

If they change the system as expected, then maybe its too late to use this strategy. But the Orioles neglecting looking at what type of FA they are signing (and looking ahead to what a player on a 1 or 2 year deal might be) has cost them dearly

I think it's kind of unrespectful- Ovie

  • Haven't really read through this thread, what's the general feeling on Duquette?

    oomah

  • My opinion is that he has the credentials to help the organization in the areas it needs the most help (latin america, player development). The big question is will Duquette be able to do everything he wants to do or will Angelos be a roadblock.

  • "According to a source, the logo won't replicate the birds from the 1970 and 1983 caps, but it will be a variation of the two, taking certain qualities of both to create the new cartoon image. These caps will be worn as part of the regular uniform, rather than being an alternate cap."

  • You already know that the Orioles have gone back to the cartoon bird on the caps - taking elements from the 1970 and 1983 models - and that the angle of the Baltimore script on the road jerseys no longer tapers at the end.

I can tell you that the cartoon bird more closely resembles the '70 version in overall shape. At first glance, you might not notice the difference.

Upon closer inspection, you'll find that the bird is wearing an O's cap. The previous model looked like a black smear. And there's a white mark along the edge of it, just like the '70s version.

Also, the bill of the bird's cap is straighter - perhaps a tribute to George Sherrill.

The first cap is the 1970's cap. Second one is the 1983 cap. Third is obviously Wieter's helmet, which looks pretty similar to the 1970 cap.
