Orioles Minor League Thread

  • Townsend has a HR in each of his last 4 games. That's pretty impressive. Certainly has some power, but he also strikes out a lot.

Edit: Sorry three games. There was a double post in there earlier in the thread.

  • Nice to see Eveland have a nice outing at AAA, since Bergesen and Tillman failed to do so.

  • Good thing Bundy is starting at Delmarva. Way to challenge the youngster.

Shorebirds 4 starters so far: 17 IP, 6 ER, 20 K's, 4 BB. Solid start. #30 prospect Eduardo Rodriguez tonight.

Can't remember a HS pitcher this advanced. @richarddent8: Is Bundy that good? That was an impressive start to his career #Orioles

  • LOL, because I definitely think his career is ruined now. There are some true clowns on here. Some of you guys have mastered the art of exaggeration. How dare anyone criticize the O's for any of their moves. These O's threads sometimes drift dangerously close to the crap on OH we so often make fun of.

Bottom line is the kid should have at least started at Frederick so he ends the year at Bowie and gets significant time there.

That is hilarious coming from you.

I'm still unclear on why you want to rush him so quickly. I doubt he throws more than 25 innings this month and if he continues to dominate like he has in his one and only start than he'll be in Frederick by May.

  • Dylan Bundy, RHP, Orioles (Low-A Delmarva)
Some considered Bundy the best talent in the 2011 draft, and in his pro debut on Friday night, last year's fourth overall pick showed why. First inning: K, K, K. Second inning: 3-1, F9, K. Third inning: K, 6-3, K. Nine batters, six strikeouts, and just one ball out of the infield while touching 98 with a fastball that sat at 94-96, and occasionally showcasing his plus secondary offerings. Get excited Baltimore. He's looking to be every bit as good as the hype.

    LOL. You are awful.

Consensus opinion was that he should start at Delmarva. Keith Law is the only "expert" I've seen suggest he should start higher.

There's no reason he can't still finish the season at Bowie, provided he proves it. The MLB target should be 2014 for Bundy. And starting him at Delmarva puts him on a good track to make that happen.

Hopefully he just has some semblance of power. Angle has the ability to be a 4th OF somewhere but his lack of power will never let him be more than that for a good team.

Speaking of guys off to incredible starts, Tyler Townsend has hit a HR in each of his last 3 games. Of course the bat has never been the problem with him, it's always been staying on the field.

As I recall, some folks were also concerned with Townsend's K/BB ratio (almost 6 to 1 at Frederick last year). So far this season, he's still striking out about once a game, but he's also drawn a couple of walks. Hopefully that keeps up. If he can get the ratio to 2:1, that's more than fine even if he's striking out once a game (Matt Kemp struck out about once a game last year but had about a 2:1 ratio).

  • Unless we suddenly turn into contenders for next season there's no reason for Bundy to be up before mid-to-late June next year*. As long as he start next year in Bowie, which seems a given barring injury or regression, than he should be ready to make a jump at that point if need be.

That being said, Buck and I think Duquette have talked about players not spending enough time in the minors before joining the MLB club. I'd rather have Bundy spend the year between Delmarva/Frederick this year, a full year at Bowie next year and then split his third season between Norfolk/Baltimore. I'm in no rush to get him to Baltimore unless we suddenly become competitive. As soon as he hits the major league roster his arbitration clock will start and I'd prefer to wait a little longer now than lose him a year earlier.

*Super 2 deadline is quickly moving deeper into June as teams continue to try and manipulate the service clock.

You're right, 64:11 K:BB ratio last year at Frederick in 271 plate appearances. It was a little strange as he's shown a decent amount of patience at the rest of his minor league stops, including 10 BB's in 78 PA at Frederick in 2010.

You're an idiot, STFU. Stop catching feelings every time you say something dumb and get rightfully called out on it. Whining for the sake of whining is so annoying.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

  • Called out for what? He dominated Delmarva in his first outing, and expect more of that to come. You don't want to overwhelm prospects, but you do want to challenge them. He is not being challenged. You also don't want guys playing on three and four different teams in a season. Start him at Frederick, move him to Bowie. Not that hard. I'm not advocating rushing him to the big leagues, but rather challenging the kid a little bit rather than wasting his innings.

    charmcity3131

  • His innings aren't being wasted. There's a lot more to pitching than the box score.

    jsh

  • There's that whole "getting used to playing professional baseball" thing he needs to do as well.

Nothing wrong with him getting used to a longer season, travel, pitching to professional hitters, wooden bats, etc at a lower level.

Get used to the environment first, then start climbing the ranks.

  • I honestly haven't heard to much about Jake Pettit before Saturday but I was impressed, pitched in the low 90s (mainly 89-91 but hit 93 a few times) kept the ball down his breaking ball is slurvy but overall was pretty impressed. He is older so I can't see him being considered a prospect but still is a LHP who has velocity, maybe something is there.

  • Machado is such a stud. It seems like there is a legitimate chance we see him in Baltimore sometime next season, probably mid to late June.

    charmcity3131

  • Only caution from me on Machado would be that, although traditionally the jump from A to AA has been known as the toughest step up, in recent years a lot of Orioles prospects have generally fared well going from Frederick to Bowie, and had a tougher time going from Bowie to Norfolk. I don't know why this is but we saw it with Wieters, Bell, Snyder, John Maine, Arrieta, Hoes....Avery and a couple others have bucked that trend but in general that's what I have noticed the past few years.

    skindeep

  • Norfolk is an extreme pitcher's park, is it not? For the hitters, it makes some sense that there has been *some* regression in their stats from AA to AAA.
