Official Games of the XXX Olympiad Thread (SPOILER FREE)

  • Redgrave is god in English rowing. Plus rowing in England is quite important. It probably won't be him.

Went to Atlanta in camp, saw baseball, basketball (Dream Team II) and team handball

  • I saw this: I'm not sure if it was posted already.

Also, I noticed from jdawg's schedule that rowing gets the NBC treatment.

Just stay off facebook/twitter for an extra 3 or 4 hours. Not that hard to do.

even if i did not everyone will and ill hear someone within earshot go "omg i cant believe Phelps lost it in the final lap".

just doesnt work out for me. but more power to you folks that can navigate the day w/o spoilers.

    We definitely need Olympics chad.

FWIW its in the 800s somewhere on Comcast (at least in Baltimore City, which seems to be very similar to the entire metropolitian area)....I randomly stumbled across them this weekend

This is unequivocally wrong. If you know how a sporting event ends, 90% of the drama of it is killed.

What the hell? Of course it ruins something. The swimming relay in Beijing would have been infinitely worse if you knew what happened.

The only thing that a spoiler wouldn't really ruin would be a start-to-finish basketball blowout or something.

  • My company(and my group especially) do a lot of work for the Olympics and now they are allowing us to stream the games at work. I'm really conflicted about this. On one hand its going to be awesome watching sports for the next month at work. On the other, it is going to be impossible to avoid spoilers. If something epic happens while I'm in a meeting and one of these non-sportsfan coworkers ruin it I will flip out. In about 48 hours I'm going to be pissed that I turned down the option to spend the summer in the village.

  • If you turned down the chance to stay in the mass orgy known as the Olympic village, you are the worst decision maker ever.

  • I mean, it wasn't just "would you rather work in the village or in the states." I would have had to take a lesser job with less pay on a ~May to ~September contract with no guarantee of having a job when I got back. It just wasn't feasible. Rio 2016 on the other hand lines up perfectly. Who wants to come with me?

I'm not talking bad ass jobs. More like "Event security" than "Lochte Fluffer." Obviously there are real jobs available, depending on your experience, but that's the kind of job that would only take a phone call.

  • Viewer's Guide for Saturday 7/28:

Gold Medal Finals (ranked roughly by US interest):

*Men's 400M IM (PrimeTime): Barring disaster, this will be Phelps and Lochte battling it out amongst themselves to determine gold and silver. Phelps is going for his 3rd straight gold in this event, fifth straight overall for USA. Any competitition will come from Japan or Hungarian Laszlo Czeh.

*Women's 400M IM (Prime Time): Katie Hoff won bronze in Beijing in this event. She won't be here, but Elizabeth Beisel has by far the best tme in the world for this event each of the past two years. Britain's Hannah Miley should be the competition as the second fastest swimmer in this event isn't even on the Chinese team.

*Women's 4x100M Free Relay (Prime Time): After winning three straight golds, the USA has been runner-up to Australia the past two Olympics. They won silver at last year's worlds, but this time to the Netherlands. Those three nations should be the medal winners.

*Men's Archery Team (Qualifying 1115-noon, Finals 545-7 PM, NBCSN): The Americans won the gold in 1996 but haven't medalled since. This year's team has the individual favorite, Brady Ellison, and should battle South Korea in the finals.

*Men's 400M Free (PrimeTime): An American has won the bronze at the past three Olympics, but Peter Vanderkaay (4th in Beijing) is the best hope. He should make the final but not much more - his top time this year is 12th in the world.

*Women's Foil (330-4 PM, MSNBC): This event has been held since 1924 and no American has ever medalled. 18 year old Lee Kiefer is 5th in the world and could break that streak.

*Men's Road Race (NBC 5-11 AM): The US won it's only medal in this event in 1984 - even Lance Armstrong never really came close in three attempts. Briton Mark Cavendish is the favorite to win the game's first gold. Tehay van Garderen, fifth in the Tour de France, is probably the best shot at a medal winner for America.

*Women's 10M Air Rifle (6-645AM, NBCSN): The US last won a medal here with a gold in Sydney. Sarah Scherer has an outside chance at getting the very first medal of the games for the US.

*Men's 10M Air Pistol: American Jason Turner medalled in this event in Beijing, but no American is expected to contend here.

*Men's Judo - Extra Lightweight: An American last medalled in 1988 but no one qualified for this event in 2012.
*Women's Judo - Extra Lightweight: The US has never medalled and has no participants.
*Women's Weightlifting - 48kg: The US won the inaugural gold in 2000 but has no competitors.

    Elsewhere on TV:

The USA women's basketball team tips off against Croatia (1145-130, LIVE on NBC) while women's soccer looks for its second win when they play Colombia at noon, LIVE on NBCSN (this is the Alex Morgan game). NBC Prime Time will also feature May & Walsh's first match in Beach Volleyball, where of course the big story this summer is "will they or won't they" wear bikinis in the freezing London " summer and Men's Gymnastics qualifying, where thankfully bikinis are not permitted. You can catch the other American beach volleyball teams throughout the day, as well. Tennis, where the US should win plenty of medals, kicks off (7a-3p) on Bravo. Those of us who love wacky more esoteric racquet sports can even check out Badminton (1130a-1215p) and Table Tennis (2-245p) on MSNBC.
