Official Games of the XXX Olympiad Thread (SPOILER FREE)

  • Since the games start THIS WEEK, I think it's time we had an official thread. Of course, big events can get their own thread, but hopefully we can make this a viewer's guide of sorts. I'm expecting big things from phelix, dh, jdawg, etc the next three weeks.

The Opening Ceremony is Friday Night on NBC at 8PM, but the games actually begin on Wednesday and Thursday:

Women's Soccer kicks off on Wednesday with the 12 teams competing in their first preliminary round game. Those games will air all day (11-6) on NBCSN and MSNBC. Team USA is the favorite in the tournament, or at least the co-favorite with Japan, who they will try to get revenge on for the World Cup Final last year. The Americans start out LIVE on Wednesday at noon on NBCSN against France with games later on against North Korea and Colombia before the knockout phase. Japan plays in a tougher group with medal hopefuls Sweden and Canada as well as South Africa.

Men's Soccer starts Thursday (7-6). I know a lot of folks will be watching this intently, but given that it's a U-23 tournament with no American team, seems a little lackluster to me. The big storyline is that this remains the only major international tournament which Brazil has never won so this would be huge for them to win. Great Britain plays for the first time in decades as the home team. Spain is the other power attending while Germany, Italy, France, and Argentina are at home in favor of a more international tournament featuring the likes of Honduras, the UAE, and Gabon. It's worth noting that Nigeria won the tournament in Atlanta and Cameroon won in Sydney so it would be far from unprecedented for a team off the radar of international soccer to have a good showing. 16 teams will participate.

  • I think we should have one thread for live viewing with spoilers and another that follows what is being currently shown on NBC.

Good call. This is definitely a no spoilers thread. If it hasn't aired somewhere on TV yet, STFU. Also we need swift banhammers for anyone that starts an OMG MICHAEL PHELPS/USAIN BOLT/TEAM USA WON/LOST thread before it airs.

Those threads are absolutely going to happen, brace yourself.

Of course. Hopefully you can be vigilant about editing thread titles at least.

  • Such commitment, Tabe. Brings a tear to my eye.

Any predictions on the cauldron lighter? Can't be Sebastian Coe because he's part of the organizing committee, can't be Daley Thompson because he's a lifelong asshole, might be Steve Redgrave even though he's just a rower (no offense, LBT). My money is on Roger Bannister.

BTW, I nailed this in '08 with Li Ning. My second choice was Gao Min, who handed him the torch.

    dh2k39898

  • It's either going to be Bannister or Redgrave. It should be Bannister or Eddie Edwards, but I give the slight edge to Redgrave.

Conference realignment, SoCon style: some actual news (Mercer, ETSU, and VMI?) and a little speculation http://wp.me/plDgR-1jv

Absolutely. Those of us that work during the day, but also want to enjoy the primetime show when we get home are already going to have to go total media blackout from like 8am onward. It'd be nice if we were at least able to still waste time on this board.

    terps687

  • BTW in this weeks SI they predicted the medals in every event. They had both Phelps and Lochte winning 5 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. They had them each winning 1 of their 2 head to head events, which is sort of a gutless prediction, though plausible.

Also they had the US winning 99 overall medals, with China winning 97 and each country winning 42 golds.

    terps687

  • They said it would be a "wow" moment so I'd have to put my money on Bannister being involved.

I'm sure we will do what we can, but if you are reading the board, you are likely to get spoiled. Happens every time.

    TortugaGrande

  • I don't remember getting spoiled very often on these boards in past Olympics. Going back to Beijing and Vancouver, most people had a pretty good idea not to start new threads about major events and to instead just post in the spoiler or non-spoiler threads. Although I think I spoiled all the non-Eastern time zone people when Lezak beat Bernard. nono

Thankfully, it's only a five-hour time difference so a lot of the major results won't unfold until anywhere from about 3 to 6 p.m. I'm assuming I'll be able to browse Twitter and news sites for much of the day without getting spoiled on many major events, but I'm probably going to avoid them later in the day.

  • Just curious, anyone ever been to a live Olympics? My wife and I are leaving for London 8/1 for a week and have tickets for three events. Two track and field and one rowing. I'm curious what the atmosphere will be like at the events and whether to go balls out patriotic - American flag waving, stars and stripes face paint, etc.?

    Umm...yes?

  • Beijing was the most fun I've ever had on this board. I can't believe it's been four years. I have two TVs, a laptop, and an iPad ready to go. I expect greatness.

Phatboy if you had any balls I'd meet you at the AFA Boxing gym and have Coach Weichers put some gloves on us.

  • I'm busy Tue-Fri night so my prep work might be minimal unless this week is slow at work :(

A lot of us will be at work and won't be able to just watch for hours on a laptop. If I can't watch live, I'd MUCH, MUCH rather avoid spoilers and have it feel live hours later than read the fucking result on a phone then watch it later knowing what will happen. That last option is far and away the worst.

Went to the Atlanta games. The coolest event we saw was ping pong. Also saw some basketball, baseball and soccer in Atlanta. We also saw an Argentina/Portugal game at RFK as well.

And yes, go all out with the face-paint and everything. Be as obnoxious as you can be. And if you get a chance to score tickets to some turd event, do it.

you must not work with a lot of sports fans. between that and social media and people texting there is no chance i can make it through a day without something big being spoiled.

Just stay off facebook/twitter for an extra 3 or 4 hours. Not that hard to do.
