Official Capitals Golf Thread, a tradition unlike any other

  • Again, as a casual fan talking it seems as though Ovie, Backstrom, Laich, Alzner, Carlson, Green, Hotlby and Kuznetsov (if he ever plays here) would be a decent enough foundation of players that are young enough to be around for a while. Is it unreasonable to think we could build a decent team from that core?

The Plan been a colossal failure.

I guess my biggest problem with all this is: Who's plan actually worked as constructed? I know people hate this, but in one respect Ted and GMGM are right. In the NHL you should build each summer around core pieces and cross your fingers.

Does Philly have some kind of grand plan? They threw huge $ at a nutcase goalies and left the 2nd round about a week before the Caps did. Even with Sid and Geno the Pens embarrassed themselves in the 1st round. The Blackhawks - a team built the same way the Caps were - are a mess. The Rangers are elite? Please. They barely beat Ottawa and the Caps and were decisively outplayed by New Jersey. Love their "D". Love their goalie. It doesn't make them any kind of favorite.

Florida literally threw a team together on the fly last summer with no rhyme or reason and a few Caps castoffs and got a division title out of it and came within a goal of the second round. Boston looked like ass in the playoffs. Why? Who the hell knows? Maybe they weren't that great the year before? They needed a HOF effort from Tim Thomas and still had to win 3 Game 7s. Was that an actual "plan"? If so I don't see how Peter Chiarelli had any more insight into team-building than GMGM.

  • Keep in mind last season they told us that way overpaying Joel Ward and giving geriatric Hamrlik multiple years was going to get us over the top. This year they refused to trade our worst defenseman when his value was at its absolute all time peak.

Just strikes me as a lack of vision/stones to do what needs to be done.

  • Not to mention they keep hiring minor league coaches

  • Halpern not back either, no great surprise. Not anywhere near the loss of Knuble in the locker room.

The Rangers is probably the worst example to try and use to prove your point. They have been building under a "plan" and "direction" for a couple years with a strong core of players and a specific identity and style of play that everyone has bought into. They were not expected to be anywhere near this good this season and ended up winning the division, the #1 seed and coming within 2 games of the Cup Finals with one of the youngest teams in the league. And lol at "decisively outplayed" when we were a -1 over the 6 games and were an overtime goal away from a game 7 at home.

Now its true that things can change drastically from year to year but that doesn't mean you just throw a bunch of random pieces together every year and hope it pans out. Having some type of plan or general direction doesn't mean you win the Cup every year but it gives you a better chance to be a top team every year and hope everything falls into place for a run one of those years.

  • I'd agree that measuring success against a "plan," whatever it may be, is one huge gray area. But they haven't even made a conference finals. For an organization that has talked about its window and "Nothing Else Matters" and winning not just one Cup but multiple Cups, that's utter failure. Maybe it's the roll of the dice that is the playoffs and they're on a cooler.

Not buying it Bklyn. Don't get me wrong. The Rangers absolutely could have made the Cup finals. It's a really good group. But
you'll find out next year that a "plan" in the NHL means shit. Everything you're saying is EXACTLY what Caps fans said after the 08 and 09 playoff losses.

"Oh, we're growing as a team. We're so young. The pipeline is full. Every free agent wants to play here." It. Means. Nothing. See what happens when even the ECF isn't good enough for your suddenly spoiled fans. See what pressure like that does to a team. See how a maniac coach grinds a group down after 3 or 4 seasons. Again, I LIKE the Rangers. But if you think this sport is linear - advance a round, advance a round, win a Cup - you're likely to get cracked in the skull next season.

How about we draft a coach???

What kid would want to sign or play for this team with a coach yet to be named?

Gonna be real tough to draft someone at 11 or 16 who is NHL ready unless one of the elite guys falls. Hey - there's a mercurial Russian available whose stock is plummeting! Not kidding.

There's also whole bunch of reasons to kill the Caps for waiting on a coach. Caring what some turd kid out of college or juniors thinks about his future coach is not one of them. Free agents, on the other hand...

Thought I saw something last week that Evason and Johnson won't be back per GMGM.

I'm not saying the brass should care what a college kid thinks about the coaching search, it just puts a sour note on the organization IMO.

Two big forwards who can both score lots of goals, move the puck well, make smart plays, and fight. lol. rockon

  • Evason to be head coach of Milwaukee of the AHL.

  • The pool of candidates is dwindling. If they don't sign someone soon you'd think they would at least need a back room handshake.

    MuddyLake

  • ah the Capitals always finding new ways to disappoint.

    AlphaOmega

  • I don't understand the rush to hire coaches in any sport. I think there would be a higher success rate if front offices conducted thorough searches with very little regard for time. The preseason is a long way off. Take your time and find the right guy.

    sublimeterp

  • It's official, the Washington Capitals have hit the turning point with fandom...they priced themselves out and the fans are not clamoring like they used to before. So, I remember when I started to get these from the Redskins...it was a fun few years...

I don't disagree that this is coming...but it isn't here yet. I was at the season ticketholder select-a-seat event last night (for people who might want to move or upgrade their tix) and there was almost nothing available. This isn't one of those Danny situations - there really is limited availability.

I did not go last night....plan on staying in my 221...

Thanks for calling me, dick! Haha

I was in the 7:30 group and was able to move down a couple rows, but available seats were few and far between. Far from a Danny boy situation. But I do feel they are pushing their limit with sth prices.
