Let's see, you have yet to play...

    Man City
    Man U
    Liverpool or
    Chelsea.

Congrats on your 0-0 result at home against a struggling Arsenal side.

  • Thanks Newterp! Great news.

    Gimme,
You'd really be thrilled about finishing behind the Big 4 + Man C (or should I say Big 4 + Arsenal)?

For a team that was 12th last year and relegated just 3 seasons ago, yeah, that's probably a big accomplishment. Especially since they don't have stupid oil money around to buy their way straight to the top.

True, but this year is their chance. Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are there for the taking. It's going to be very interesting to watch all these teams battle it out. Still early.

  • Yeah I would be happy with a sixth place finish. There was nobody for any well-known publication or blog that picked Newcastle to finish anywhere in the top half and people were even picking them to be relegated. On a team with zero stars, I was just hoping for a top half finish coming into the year. The start of the year has far surpassed my expectations and although I would absolutely love a top five finish, I also want to be realistic. It's early in the season...they have yet to play United, City, Chelsea, Spurs, or Liverpool and drew an Arsenal team who was not quite playing together yet. I think the Magpies should definitely stay in the top half of the table, but I don't want to start counting my stars just yet.

  • They stay well organized. They are one of the few teams this year actually keeping the ball out of their net. Right now they are getting enough production up front to go along with that. Lack of scoring punch will probably be their Achilles heel, but if they can stay somewhat stingy on defense they can hang around. As the others have pointed out, let's see where they are at after getting through the tough part of the schedule.

I agree with you. They play extremely well as a team and the defense has been very good. Krul has been fabulous in goal and Cabaye has been super consistent in the middle. Other than Ba though, who else is going to score for this team against the likes of City, United, Chelsea? I think they can keep it close with most o the big boys, but we'll see if they can get some points.

The drew Spurs at St. James Park. I agree with your overall sentiment though, and can't believe anyone would question a Newcastle fan being happy with a sixth place finish this year. The teams birdie listed are "there for the taking," but they're still a good bit more talented on paper than Newcastle is. They'll need to stay healthy and focused, which is tough over a long season.

  • No one scores on Newcastle at home and they are like a point out of top 2. Gimme is being excessively realistic to be happy with a sixth place finish at this point. I kind of admire his realism.

There are a bunch of teams that have regressed (Stoke, Bolton, Fulham...) this year so I think a top five finish is still possible though admittedly unlikely now that Arsenal is coming around.

So you think sixth is too low but that a top five finish is "still possible though admittedly unlikely"? Makes perfect sense.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

Im a Jets, Mets, and Newcastle fan...I'm used to not winning so I have resorted to realism using mostly pessimistic thoughts.

Yup. Were I a Newcastle fan I would be hoping for more but it is realistic to think a sixth or lower finish is likely.

I'm an Orioles, Redskins and AC Milan fan so I guess I have Milan.

  • Spurs getting DOMINATED by Fulham but somehow lead 2-1 with 15 to play. Friedel has been huuuuge.

  • woww modric sits on the post and stops a goal with a min left in stoppage, after walker basically tackles the ball in the box and doesnt get a penalty called.

    spurs getting the breaks.

  • WOW DEFOE

    MJ6964

  • Fuck Defoe. This was cruel and unfair.

    PaulUMD

  • That was brutal. Spurs had no business winning that game. All their chances - all three of them - were from counters. Fulham has to convert on one of those though.

Regardless, the average soccer fan without an allegiance to either team had to find that entire second half to be as riveting as any mid-season game can get.
