  • Community Shield tomorrow! (I'm just ready for the season to begin, I could care less which Manc team wins.)

    Soundsnice

  • Jacked!! Everyone should make their preseason predictions soon.

  • So pumped 1000 times more excited for this than NFL football

  • Prediction time!

    Top four:
    Golden Boot:
    Golden Glove:
    POY:
    Young POY (23 or younger):

    DBK

  • I'm a pretty big Gunners fan, and I am not really optimistic this season. We are going to have to scrap and claw our way to a CL spot, and these are not typical Wenger traits. There's so much in doubt at this point, but I'm along for the ride.

Top Four: Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, City (by a point pover Arsenal ... and lolol at Spuds)
    Golden Boot: Suarez
    Golden Glove: Cech
    POY: Jack Wilshere
    Young POY: Jordan Henderson

POY/Young POY seem to be ham picks for Brits, so in no way do I think these people are the actual POY/Young POY.

    Soundsnice

  • Top four: United, Chelsea, Man City (sounds like a gay bar), Liverpool
    Golden Boot: Robin Van Persie
    Golden Glove: Hart
    POY: Vidic
Young POY (23 or younger): Daniel Sturridge if he can get some run

  • Surprised so many have Liverpool in their top four, but Arsenal and Tottenham are pretty dubious at this juncture. Liverpool were very good after Dalglish took over.

Man City has the squad, but I don't think they have the manager.

Top Four: Chelsea, Man United, Man City, Liverpool

    Golden Boot: Rooney

    Golden Glove: Cech

    POY: Suarez

    Young POY: Albrighton (Aston Villa)

  • Serious question--are any of the major games on normal cable (I think I've seen something on FoxSportsNet before), and how does this league relate to the Champions League. I liked watching the Spanish guys play in the World Cup, so which team should I bandwagon onto if I wanted to catch some of them?

Also, in general, which team should I bandwagon onto? Keep in mind, I'll probably only watch the really big games because I'm not wildly into soccer/football.

On normal cable, I think it's pretty much the English Premier League they show on ESPN which is one game on Saturday and one on Sunday, IIRC. And it will invariably feature Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City or Tottenham. More often than not playing one another. So if it's only the "really big games" you want, that should work. And if you are going to "bandwagon" a team, you pretty much have to pick one of those clubs because they'll be the only ones you'll get to see with any regularity. Do everyone and the world a favor and pick any team OTHER THAN Barcelona to bandwagon. Any team in the world but them. Please. Can't stress this enough.
Fox Soccer Channel shows 2 additional EPL games every Saturday and Sunday followed by an Italian League (usually Inter, Roma, Juventus, or AC Milan) match on delay. Fox Soccer Plus has more English games and French Ligue One stuff. The only place I ever see Spanish league is on GOL TV. Honestly I forget where they show German Bundesliga as I really don't pay much attention to that league.
The Champions League is televised throughout the season on ESPN as well. Though the games are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at around 2:45 East Coast time.

Nice, nice, nice. I'll keep ESPN in mind for sure. I guess I just get sucked into the World Cup and intra-country (Barcelona/Madrid, e.g.) rivalries more easily than the more professional atmosphere of an EPL. I'm not saying that all the best guys in EPL and other leagues are mercenaries or something, but as a guy who doesn't know as much about soccer, it's so damn fun to see the really elite players leading their home countries in a nationalistic frenzy.

It seems like they play almost year-round, though. As a knowledgeable fan, how many leagues/events would you say a superstar like Messi/Ronaldo/Rooney/etc. plays in every calendar year?

  • A lot of the best players get probably less than a month off all year. Most of the European leagues go into May. The Champions League doesn't finish until late May. Then in June you get all of the international duty, where they play for country (World Cup, Copa America, Gold Cup, Euro Qualifying, etc.) Then in July, back to training for domestic league starts in August/September. It's pretty much non-stop.
Something else you might enjoy as a casual fan---their WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends). The arm candy these guys pull is ridiculous. Way hotter than what you see American jocks with. I've decided if I am reincarnated I will come back as a Greek shipping magnate or a European football star.

This has been semi-addressed but if you want to root for the team that's closest to the Spain national team, your squad would be Barcelona. You really don't even have to be a fan of theirs to watch them play and enjoy it. They're just on a completely different level than any other team right now in terms of all-around technical ability, talent and cohesion.

The Champions League is a separate tournament that runs concurrently with each team's main league. It basically pits the best teams from each of the European leagues (EPL, La Liga, Serie A, etc) in a semi-simliar style to a World Cup set-up (except it's spread out over a longer period). Barcelona has won it 2 of the past 3 seasons, including last year.

  • Hey guys,

I'm looking to get into soccer, so could someone give me a rundown of what's what in the Premier League? I know the big 4 are Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Man City spends a lot of money so they should be better. Who are the best players and who should I be looking out for in the next few years?

On my stream the commentator at halftime said De Gea allowed the most goals (11) from outside of the box in La LIga last year.

I recommend watching all the teams and choosing one at the end of the season. If you feel like your leaning towards a club do some research and learn about the club. Then pick one that resonates with you.
