Havnt all ur teams made the playoffs in the past year?

  • you guys are right, i should never complain about relief pitchers. the mets have a greater history than 80% of the teams in mlb rendering all complaints nonsensical

  • too bad it got locked

you're wrong anyhow. we should have been thrilled after the 2007 and 2008 seasons ended. the mets almost won 90 games after all. let's not root for the mets to win the division, we've had too many moments in the sun. go phillies and braves, maybe they can catch up to the mets' storied and elite history that we would only recognize if we weren't so consumed with matching the yankees

  • mets fans, what moment do you think was most symbolic of the mets' enviable winning traditiion in the 00s

-grant roberts smoking up on the front page of newsday
-karim garcia and shane spencer beating up a pizza delivery man
-piazza having a press conference to say he wasn't gay
-anna benson ripping carlos delgado for hating america
-tom glavine giving up 500 runs in both his first and last mets starts and being devastated neither time
-delgado and pedro saying they just got bored sometimes after near 90-win amazing season #1
    -ambiorix burgos' vehicular homicide
-kaz matsui being a top 10 prospect
    -"bend ya knees"
-firing willie in the middle of the night on a west coast trip
-omar accusing adam rubin of lobbying for a front office job
-tony bernazard ripping off his shirt and challenging minor leaguers to a fight

  • it sure doesn't match up with the 90s though

-doc getting banned for a year
    -cone masturbating in the bullpen
-bobby bo telling klap he would "show him the bronx"
    -saberhagen spraying reporters with bleach
-vince coleman throwing a firecracker at a little girl
-coleman, doc and darryl boston getting accused of rape
-gregg jeffries' open letter on the fan
    -generation k completely flaming out
-kevin mcreynolds not knowing how to use a lifecycle
-todd hundley playing in the outfield
    -carl everett beating his kids

I'd glady take that, plus the 2000 NL pennant and 2006 NL East pennant over:

-Being one of, if not the, most mentioned teams in the Mitchell report despite losing every single year in the 2000s
-Palmerio accusing Miguel Tejada of giving him a tainted B12 shot
    -Trading for Kris Benson
-Fans staging a protest during the middle of a game against ownership
-Jake Fox tripping over his own feet to prevent us from beating the Yankees
    -Steve Bechler's death
    - Top "prospects" Matt Riley, Hayden Penn, Adam Loewen, Garrett Olson
    - Our GM talking about Howard Stern guests/personalities/whatever as if they were actual prospects in our system
    - "Confederate money"
    - Marty Cordova falling asleep on a tanning bed

  • Your ballpark is OPACY, which is the model modern ballpark almost 20 years after it opened. We built a new ball park, and still couldn't do it right. Our main meeting area, the "Jackie Robinson Rotunda" is an utter disgrace that pays tribute not to the current team that occupies the building, but to a different existing franchise from the past. Sure the Mets' purpose was to bring back National League baseball to New York, and its colors and fanbase are derived from the Dodgers & Giants. But model the entire main space after the Dodgers is inherently embarrassing. I was there this weekend. You wouldn't know you're in a Mets ballpark until you're upstairs.

  • well, i do need to be more grateful for near 90-win seasons. at least the mets competed hard (until the final weeks of the season)! maybe one of these days i'll get it!

can't believe all that yankee AURA AND MYSTIQUE blinds me to the winning and respected franchise i've rooted for all along

Our most celebrated team of the past 29 years is a team that got bounced from the playoffs on the last day of the season and won 87 games. Since 1983 you have two less NLCS appearances than we have winning seasons. But yeah, keep telling us how awful it is being a Mets fan.

  • i'm not really sure what the cutoffs are here. i guess the mets had to have had their last playoff appearance be in 1996 to be allowed to bitch about being a mets fan. or maybe it could have been 2006, but they had to lose their last 7 games by an aggregate of 175-0 to blow a 7 game lead in 2007. or maybe they had to blow september leads three straight years, followed by back-to-back 130+ loss seasons

maybe everything could be solved if they just moved way upstate so nobody would worry about the yankees anymore, because the syracuse sky chiefs just don't match up to the mets as far as winning tradition goes

    screamin_jay

  • maybe they can move to philly and be first-class citizens for the first time and dwarf those poor, tortured phillies fans who've really had little to cheer about recently. especially the last, oh, five seasons or so

    screamin_jay

  • O's fans clearly have had it worse in recent history than the Mets, I'm not sure how that is debatable.

BTW I was very impressed with the Mets these past 3 games. I couldn't name half their lineup before Monday but they've put together a solid team. francisco at the back of the pen is scary, i'm not sure why Parnell isn't used there instead.

  • I didn't realize the Mets had a competent offense, especially if Davis continues to turn it around. With Dickey and Santana they certainly have enough to hang around for most of the season. I thought the Mets would be complete garbage since all I ever hear about them is jay's complaints.

    jsh

  • i don't know why it's an argument of who has it worse. is that really being argued? is it relevant to what i should feel about the team i root for--other teams have it worse, thus i can't emote even given many reasons to do so? i think you can factor just how spectacular the mets' failures have been--given the money spent, the relative levels of hype, etc.--as something in "favor" of the mets, but it's not going to negate not winning for a long ass time. if o's fans are mad about how the series went, then fine, but let's just say i disagree very strongly with some things being said (esp. that the yankees' success plays a big role in exaggerating feelings and that i should somehow view the 2007/08, and by some measure, 98 seasons as successes when no fan, no matter how rational, could possibly look at them that way)

as for the serious baseball talk, well, i'm gonna get attacked for anything i say right now, but you can't take much from 3 games. it's obvious the mets' rotation is a lot better than anyone thought it is, but its continued success depends on whether johan is going to stay healthy. the offense has been "good," but there's a lot not sustainable about it, but maybe my opinion changes once guys get healthier and davis continues getting it back together. the bullpen and defense still suck, even if it wasn't evident in this series and that's not going to change. i think people in charge don't think parnell really has the makeup for closing or even full-time setup duties (miguel batista 8th inning guy ftl) b/c his command isn't great, he relies too much on his fastball, doesn't pitch well with runners on, whatever. he's been more unlucky than bad imo, but then i'm not a manager

  • Both ownerships fucked their respective franchises for far too long. We can agree about that.

Also, a sub 500 record and a barely-over 500 record are identical at the end of the season if both teams miss the playoffs.

    Certainly not identical in suffering.

  • the only reason i said something is because it looked like there was a disagreement on who has had it worse. i wasn't around for the game thread much and i skimmed some posts so maybe i had it wrong.
