Well Comrie should be happy to have a job, He is married to money, and the Pens carried him last year and gave him a shot but he's an UFA. And Asham was a $750k kind of guy, and they signed one or two of their two way players already. But if guys like Connor and Dustin Jeffrey (he's an RFA) can get paid, the Pens will just fill it in from the bottom.

Adams is unsigned for next year. And I assume you mean Letang and not former Pen Ryan Whitney.
The Pens have always managed their cap reasonably well. The $3.5m hit on Letang is an absolute steal. I think they overpaid for Martin, but not by that much, and in last year's market it took big $ to get him and Michalek there. Ultimately, the issue is obviously health and whether there's going to be any room for a couple of solid wingers. Playing with Crosby would make anyone look capable (as Pens fans who watched Rob Brown pot 49 goals playing alongside Mario Lemieux know all too well), but if they want to go deep they'll need a winger or two to step up and score.

Agreed, but before last season Letang looked more like an Ozolinsh/Coffey-type of player than a complete defenseman, so they couldn't count on him becoming the stud he became.

He looked terrible the last half of the season too. His offensive production dropped off completely without Crosby and Malkin in the line-up and he had some awful defensive lapses.
I despise Letang, but then again I always seem to hate our top offensive defenseman. I hated Whitney before this too.

My guess is that Sid, Staal and Letestu center the top 3 lines. If they get Jagr and put him on a line with Staal and Geno, and Sid is ok, Neal and Kunitz make sense there. Cooke drops down with Letestu and say Tangradi, and Adams just keeps doing what he does with either the two way players or Comrie and Asham. I think Shero just wants to see what kind of money his UFA's are going to command, but if he can deal any or them in, those appear to be the roster spots they need to fill and who should/would be of interest. All the fans of the other teams figure they got a shot at the Cup, but so do the Pens. Who wants to play there? Personally, I hope Jagr does.

Weber or Bieksa, unless you got one of them to take a Detroit discount, would destroy your salary structure. I don't know what's in your system to replace Rafalski's minutes, but Holland's track record of finding guys who can play, either as cheap FAs or via the system, is pretty solid. If this were pre-lockout you guys could spend away, but he's adapted beautifully to the capped NHL.

I love Kronwall too - most underrated player in the league in my book - but he's not a 1st-unit PP guy. Let him shut down other team's best lines and chip in with occasional offense and get away with more leaving-his-feet hits than any other player in the history of the NHL rather than expecting him to turn into Lidstrom's second coming.

Caps could always go MJ90 at second-line center, but go after a legit-ass third-line center. With the salary cap going up so much they need to re-sign Laich - provided its under $4 million (and even that's a stretch). To me the whole third line needs to be revamped. Fehr is a ? because of his shoulders. If you want to throw Poti on LTIR you should still have plenty of room to add another D-man, fix the third line. Plenty of depth at Hershey this year to get through the inevitable injuries at both D - Orlov/McNeill/Sloan - and F - Perreault, Eakin, Andrew Gordon/Aucoin. Let Bradley go. This is obviously the "we didn't trade Semin or Green" lineup. I'm glad to hear any ideas on that front.

Agreed Laich has to be re-signed, and I don't think you'd need a $4m hit to do it. $3-3.5, depending on term, should get it done.
I love MJ90, but I'm not sure if he's ready to be the 2C at this point. I'm distraught that Kuznetsov isn't coming over this year, because his upside is higher than MJ90's IMO and I think his mix of power and skill would mesh beautifully with Laich and Semin on the second line.
Like most Caps fans, I adore MP85. But he may end up being a rich man's Chris Bourque more than a regular NHLer.
I think Poti's out of here. He's either LTIR or a buyout or injury settlement I think. Erskine, frankly, earned his minutes last year and deserves to be in the top six. Orlov is the wild card. I'd love to see him and Wideman together on the points on the first PP unit - both of them are devastatingly effective at getting shots to the net in traffic. And that lets you bump Green to the second unit, where he can provide a different look against 2nd unit PKers with his freelancing and pinching.
Varly's another question mark - he may go to the KHL. Which is fine, because Holtby is in the wings.

I'm getting senile. hahaha!!!! Feeble minded for sure. Uh, make that Ray Shero. But what have you come to expect from the ODB?
Oh, and I don't mean to pontificate to the Caps fans, but there will be some "mad money" out there for guys like Laich. I seriously doubt he, or anyone else who has a shot to continue to make big money stay put taking a serious pay cut. I consider Laich a better player/FA than guys like Talbot, and if Max can command $3 million on the market, Laich can command a whole lot more, IMHO.
Oh, I found the link. http://www.thepensblog.com/pensblog-news/tpb/tuesdays-with-stoosh-621.html
For those who might not want to read something that long, just go to the 5th and 6th dot down under the Pens pre-season schedule and check out where Stoosh goes into the minimums and the problem that teams like the Caps and the Pens and others will have with their FA's. There are 10 teams $10 million under the minimum and the Panthers are $30 million under in a state with no state income tax. He's an inciteful blogger albeit a Pittsburgh blogger (which might be offensive to all except us Pittsburgh fans).

My one issue with that theory - the Caps and Pens have the ultimate trump card: Winning. Neither Brooks Laich nor Max Talbot is going to Florida even for $5 million They aren't going to the Islanders without that arena getting approved yet. They aren't going to Phoenix. I'm sure there are some teams that could poach them. And, Laich, especially may just get too much on the open market from a Toronto - or, hell, even a Winnipeg. But most of those teams with crazy cash to spend aren't legitimate options for players used to being Cup contenders.
