NHL offseason thread?

Can someone do this with the Flyers lineup for next year. I now have no idea who plays for them.

Looking at capgeek, the D and goalies are easy to set up:

    Timmonen-Pronger-Meszaros-Coburn-Carle-Bartulis
Bryzgalov-Bobrovsky (presumably Bob will be the backup)

Line combos at forward are difficult to figure out, especially because a lot of guys are unsigned - Carcillo, Leino, Nodl, Zherdev, plus new boys Voracek and Simmonds.

Capgeek has nine forwards signed, and one of them is Ian Laperriere who is never playing again. So there are really eight - Briere, Hartnell, JVR, Giroux, Schenn, Versteeg, Shelley, and Betts. Assuming Lappy and Leighton go away, they'll have about $10m to play with. Voracek, Simmonds, and Carcillo are RFAs and will probably cost you around $3.5m combined to sign. Leino is a UFA, so I'd expect he'll get more on the open market than Philly can pay him.

Lots of decisions for Philly to make, and not a lot of cap room to make them with. Realistically, to get Brad Richards in there they'd need to deal off another piece or get him to take a discount. They'd love to get someone to take Briere or Hartnell's contracts off their hands but I don't think that's happening.

Well Comrie should be happy to have a job, He is married to money, and the Pens carried him last year and gave him a shot but he's an UFA. And Asham was a $750k kind of guy, and they signed one or two of their two way players already. But if guys like Connor and Dustin Jeffrey (he's an RFA) can get paid, the Pens will just fill it in from the bottom.

Comrie is flat-out useless at this point in his career. It makes way more sense for a kid to get those minutes. Didn't Shero already announce that Comrie is gone?

Adams is unsigned for next year. And I assume you mean Letang and not former Pen Ryan Whitney.

The Pens have always managed their cap reasonably well. The $3.5m hit on Letang is an absolute steal. I think they overpaid for Martin, but not by that much, and in last year's market it took big $ to get him and Michalek there. Ultimately, the issue is obviously health and whether there's going to be any room for a couple of solid wingers. Playing with Crosby would make anyone look capable (as Pens fans who watched Rob Brown pot 49 goals playing alongside Mario Lemieux know all too well), but if they want to go deep they'll need a winger or two to step up and score.

Yeah, I realized my mistake and fixed it quickly.

Adams resigned last Friday for two years.

And no, Martin is not overpaid. Letang is an offensive defenseman. Martin is not used in that role nor is he expected to be used in that role on our team. He did just fine this year to deserve the money he got.

Agreed, but before last season Letang looked more like an Ozolinsh/Coffey-type of player than a complete defenseman, so they couldn't count on him becoming the stud he became.

He looked terrible the last half of the season too. His offensive production dropped off completely without Crosby and Malkin in the line-up and he had some awful defensive lapses.

I despise Letang, but then again I always seem to hate our top offensive defenseman. I hated Whitney before this too.

I believe they re-signed Adams last week for a slight raise.

nhl offseason. ovi must really be hitting the gym, eating right and focusing on next season at this point. right? :(

Would I prefer that Ovie be getting his Laron Landry on in the gym this summer? Sure. But Ovie ain't the problem. He's the one truly outstanding playoff performer on this team. He can go fuck Russian supermodels and DJ at douchey Moscow clubs all summer as much as I care.

What I want to know is what Mike Green's offseason regimen is, because his limp-noodled upper body "strength" makes him an easy target (and completely ineffective) come playoff time. I want to know if Alexander Semin is seeing a sports psychologist to help him wake his ass up 100% of the time. And I want to know if GMGM has a plan for the second-line center situation.

He's a very good player, but his hit is $6.5m a year for the next four seasons, and he turns 34 in October. They'd ritually sacrifice small children to be rid of his deal.

Come to think of it, it's the Flyers, so we can't put that move past them biggrin

My guess is that Sid, Staal and Letestu center the top 3 lines. If they get Jagr and put him on a line with Staal and Geno, and Sid is ok, Neal and Kunitz make sense there. Cooke drops down with Letestu and say Tangradi, and Adams just keeps doing what he does with either the two way players or Comrie and Asham. I think Shero just wants to see what kind of money his UFA's are going to command, but if he can deal any or them in, those appear to be the roster spots they need to fill and who should/would be of interest. All the fans of the other teams figure they got a shot at the Cup, but so do the Pens. Who wants to play there? Personally, I hope Jagr does.

Comrie will not be back next year. It's unfortunate because he didn't really get a fair shake with injuries, but it is the nature of the game.

I really doubt Asham takes the same money next year. He signed for less to play with Pittsburgh, but I just cannot see him doing that. Though I'd love to have him back.

Rupp thinks he can get $2 mil on the open market, so at the very least, he is going to test it. Again, another player I'd love to have back.

It was just reported that Max turned down a 3-year offer from the Pens because he wants a 4-year contract. I love him, but he's gone.

  • Caps could always go MJ90 at second-line center, but go after a legit-ass third-line center. With the salary cap going up so much they need to re-sign Laich - provided its under $4 million (and even that's a stretch). To me the whole third line needs to be revamped. Fehr is a ? because of his shoulders. If you want to throw Poti on LTIR you should still have plenty of room to add another D-man, fix the third line. Plenty of depth at Hershey this year to get through the inevitable injuries at both D - Orlov/McNeill/Sloan - and F - Perreault, Eakin, Andrew Gordon/Aucoin. Let Bradley go. This is obviously the "we didn't trade Semin or Green" lineup. I'm glad to hear any ideas on that front.

    Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
    Laich-MJ90-Semin
    x-x-x
    Chimera-Gordon-Hendricks
    Beagle-Sjogren

    Green-Schultz Neuvirth-Varly
    Alzner-Carlson
    Wideman-Poti
    Erskine

Weber or Bieksa, unless you got one of them to take a Detroit discount, would destroy your salary structure. I don't know what's in your system to replace Rafalski's minutes, but Holland's track record of finding guys who can play, either as cheap FAs or via the system, is pretty solid. If this were pre-lockout you guys could spend away, but he's adapted beautifully to the capped NHL.

Nothing. We have nothing to replace Rafi's minutes. I'm a huge Kronwall fan, but if we ask him to step into Rafalski's role (especially on the PP), I'm afraid his play will suffer.

As far as our cap space, we could be okay if Draper and Osgood both decide to hang it up for good. We're also not going to bring Salei back, so that along with the cap going up $4.9 million, anything is possible.

    Detroit Hustles Harder

    detroitterp1184

  • For next season, Eli, a lot depends on Jagr. Here's how I see the basic structure with and without Jagr:

    With Jagr as Top-6 Winger:

    Kunitz-Crosby-Neal
    Malkin-Staal-Jagr
    Cooke-Letestu-FA Winger/Tangradi
    Jeffrey-Adams-FA Winger/Tangradi

    -----

Now, that wing position is up in the air. Some reports have the Pens thinking of Jagr as a third-line player and PP specialist which, if true, would bump Tangradi up to probably the first line and Neal down to the second line (which, personally, I like better).

Thus, with Jagr as Third Liner:

    Kunitz-Crosby-Tangradi
    Malkin-Staal-Neal
    Cooke-Letestu-Jagr
    Jeffrey-Adams-FA Winger

    (OMG, DROOL)

    ----

Without Jagr, I think we look like this:

    Kunitz-Crosby-FA $3 Million Winger
    Malkin-Staal-Neal
    Cooke-Letestu-Tangradi
    Jeffrey-Adams-FA Winger

    -----

And, FWIW, I don't think Jagr will be a Penguin. Enough analysis for tonight. Good night.

I love Kronwall too - most underrated player in the league in my book - but he's not a 1st-unit PP guy. Let him shut down other team's best lines and chip in with occasional offense rather than expecting him to turn into Lidstrom's second coming.

Problem is that all indications point to the Salary Cap going down in 2012-2013, so teams are definitely going to take that into consideration.

Agreed Laich has to be re-signed, and I don't think you'd need a $4m hit to do it. $3-3.5, depending on term, should get it done.

I love MJ90, but I'm not sure if he's ready to be the 2C at this point. I'm distraught that Kuznetsov isn't coming over this year, because his upside is higher than MJ90's IMO and I think his mix of power and skill would mesh beautifully with Laich and Semin on the second line.

Like most Caps fans, I adore MP85. But he may end up being a rich man's Chris Bourque more than a regular NHLer.

I think Poti's out of here. He's either LTIR or a buyout or injury settlement I think. Erskine, frankly, earned his minutes last year and deserves to be in the top six. Orlov is the wild card. I'd love to see him and Wideman together on the points on the first PP unit - both of them are devastatingly effective at getting shots to the net in traffic. And that lets you bump Green to the second unit, where he can provide a different look against 2nd unit PKers with his freelancing and pinching.

Varly's another question mark - he may go to the KHL. Which is fine, because Holtby is in the wings.

  • I agree with your analysis, RHTB&G, and I can live with it either way. Plus, there is room for the two way players on the 4th line freeing more money for the other holes. It's becoming more of a question of who wants to stay and compete for the Cup with an outstanding Defense and Goalie and a couple of the games stars. God I wish we could dump Cooke. LOL!!!

And as I said earlier, there are clubs who might give Talbot 4 years at $3 mil just because they have to meet the minimum. It's like musical chairs, and the real wild card appears to be who starts tossing money at guys and over-paying. Freddie is just sitting there seeing how it all comes to him. What we do have is SOLID.

Oh, and I don't mean to pontificate to the Caps fans, but there will be some "mad money" out there for guys like Laich. I seriously doubt he, or anyone else who has a shot to continue to make big money stay put taking a serious pay cut. I consider Laich a better player/FA than guys like Talbot, and if Max can command $3 million on the market, Laich can command a whole lot more, IMHO.

Oh, I found the link. http://www.thepensblog.com/pensblog-news/tpb/tuesdays-with-stoosh-621.html

For those who might not want to read something that long, just go to the 5th and 6th dot down under the Pens pre-season schedule and check out where Stoosh goes into the minimums and the problem that teams like the Caps and the Pens and others will have with their FA's. There are 10 teams $10 million under the minimum and the Panthers are $30 million under in a state with no state income tax. All fair points. Just look at Kuznetsov as Semin's replacement, I guess. And it can't hurt him to have another year of development in the KHL. Still will be just 19. I agree on MJ90. But I figured his presence let's you splurge on a really good 3rd-line guy. If you have Erskine as a No. 6 and Poti gone then that means Tyler Sloan is an NHL regular as the No. 7. Orlov has to play every day.

Love the idea with Green on 2nd PP. Wideman was so much better at getting shots on goal there. Perreault is what he is - but that's a pretty nice guy to have for 20-30 games during the regular season if someone gets hurt. Eakin can get some development time at Hersey, too. I would resign Varly for anything under $2 million. Just so much upside there. Why make the move until the contracts force you to? Gets Holtby one more development year, too - though I'm sure even with Varly here he would get 10-15 NHL starts.

My one issue with that theory - the Caps and Pens have the ultimate trump card: Winning. Neither Brooks Laich nor Max Talbot is going to Florida even for $5 million They aren't going to the Islanders without that arena getting approved yet. They aren't going to Phoenix. I'm sure there are some teams that could poach them. And, Laich, especially may just get too much on the open market from a Toronto - or, hell, even a Winnipeg. But most of those teams with crazy cash to spend aren't legitimate options for players used to being Cup contenders.

The other difference would seem to be that Talbot, Rupp and Dupuis have won the Cup. I just don't see Laich taking a HUGE pay cut to stay in Washington when there will be someone willing to pay him or give him a raise. Shoot, Rupp and Talbot have been offered in the $1.5-1.8 million range in Pittsburgh, and Max thinks he can get $3million? FML! He's young, has a Cup on his resume, but he's not worth near that. Rupp has been a journeyman and it's his shot for some big money before it's too late. Dupuis is a nice player with a house full of kids, and this is his best shot for a big pay-off. But dang, are any of them worth $3million?

I love Laich, but all it takes is one of those 10 teams looking like they are building a team to compete for the Cup to give him a raise and some contract length, and if I were him, I'd be gone before taking a pay cut to stay in DC. Christ, if I were him I'd be pissed at the money they pay Semin if they expect him to take a pay cut, and if I were the Caps, it's Semin who would be going to the Panthers (or somewhere else) so I could keep Laich.
