If Staal will sign long term in Carolina, I'd move him as long as I could send Martin along with him.

Why would Carolina - a team a couple of years from serious contention - take on Martin's contract to acquire Staal now when they know they can get Staal for free the following year? Anyone who takes Martin on will be on the hook for $5m per year for the next three years for a 31-year-old second-pairing defenseman. Shero's a great GM, but that contract is a disaster.
If he wants to dump Martin, he's either going to have to find a team with a lot of space that thinks its one decent d-man away (unlikely) or give up a younger player of value, maybe someone like a Dustin Jeffrey, to sweeten the pot.

I'm just telling you what the blogs and newspapers are writing and saying, gocaps1. I think they'll get value from Staal from someone and that Shero means to move a couple of defensemen and Martin is one of them.

I'm not directing that at you per se Eli - I've seen some of the same stuff you have - I'm just pointing out that they're written with a clear Penguins bias and likely come from the Pens FO trying to move the needle with potential trade partners. If Shero wants to handcuff Martin to Staal, the value he gets for Staal might solely be someone agreeing to take Martin's contract on. The Pens might get a throw-in player but nothing more. If he deals Staal separately, then he can get serious quality in exchange.

This could be one of the most entertaining drafts in recent memory because there's so much uncertainty. After Yakupov, there's pretty much no agreement, particularly because many of the top players suffered serious injuries this past season. Picks 2-30 could play out 100,000 different ways.
