NHL Offseason Thread (Tomorrow is TODAY!!!!!)

  • I guess if moves are being made, we can start this up?

Caps trade Vokoun to Pittsburgh for 7th Round Pick. Pens sign Vokoun to 2-year, $4 million deal. Love this move. In Shero We Trust.

  • It's absurd to me that teams can start making these moves while the finals are going on.

  • I can see now Vokoun taking over for an injured Fluery and leading the Penguins very far.

I very much tend to agree. It puts the teams still playing at a disadvantage.

Not for resigning him, but not that team

  • Hockey isn't going to exist to me for a while. Sure, a bunch of well-mannered gentlemen will don the Winged Wheel sweater and play the games on the schedule, but it won't be the same without #5. Hopefully Zetterberg gets the C and I can pretend to move on.

Look at it this way - the most obvious suitor for him on the open market probably would have been Tampa. It sucks that it's the Pens, but we got something for him and we got him out of the division.

Vegas odds for '13 Cup winner are out. Pens fairly big favorite. Pens: 7/1 Kings: 11/1 Rangers, Hawks, Blues and Wings: 12/1 Flyers: 14/1

Crosby on the verge of a 10-year, $90 million contract extension.

  • The Boston Bruins are likely headed to some serious salary cap hell. With their recent re-signings, they now have $65 million dedicated to just 21 players, two of which -- Savard and Thomas -- likely won't play a minute next season. (Savard and Thomas account for more than $9 million in cap space. Savard's money comes off if he retires, but they're stuck with Thomas' $5 million.) And they still have to re-sign Tuuka Rask.

when does his contract expire? seems very risky to give him a 10 year deal.

Without an extension, he'll be a UFA next offseason.

so wait half a season and sign him. it might cost you a bit more but right now it seems like he just cant stay healthy.

Savard won't retire. He has no incentive to, he can just stay injured and be part of the team collecting a paycheck for another year (like Poti). If he retires, he doesn't see any of that money. He'll hang on the roster during the offseason, when they can go over the cap by a decent enough cushion if needed (don't have the exact number in front of me, but the Caps had to do it within the last two years), and then go LTIR when we get to the regular season.

Thomas's deal is going to screw them though, which is awesome.

You want the Rangers to trade for a player who doesn't want to play in the NHL?

I don't think it would cost us anymore because he gives us a slight discount to allow us to sign other players, but I still think they will sign him in this offseason. He's well worth it. And again, a lot of the problems he was having were neck issues, not necessarily concussion-related issues.

If we get him its because he wants to play in the NHL, if he doesn't want to play in the NHL then he won't be here. This is assuming we would have to give up like nothing for him (our 1st round pick).

No thanks JBurd, well take Justin.

The Bolts have found their goalie, acquiring Anders Lindback from Nashville. He'll be their No.1 next season, by all accounts.

  • yea, not too terrible of a price. They give up two 2nd rounders this year and a 3rd next year plus Caron. No choice but to make that move, pretty solid for both teams

    BklynTerp

  • Reports are that Edmonton will keep the number one pick in the draft. If they like Yakupov that much, then they need to move at least one of their other young forwards this week to get more picks so they can get defensive help. If they stay at number one and reach for a defenseman, Tambellini should be fired.

  • Seen rumors that Carolina might be offering a package to the Pens for Staal and Martin. Would love that if so.

Additionally, someone give me a random first-round caliber name to go nuts for on Friday at the draft.

That rumor was insane - no way Carolina offers Sutter, Faulk, and the 8th overall and agrees to take on Martin's contract. Staal alone I could absolutely see.

Is the reason they're looking to deal Staal cap-related? Because I feel like the Pens would dearly miss him.
