It's a ridiculous contract if Knicks had matched it. For Rockets, it's a decent contract. He will count approximately $8 mil against the cap each year. Rockets will more than likely make enough money with Lin as they already have a good deal of Chinese fans (Yao era).

  • What a joke - actually feel for Knicks fans in this case.

    cathal

  • it's not really a ridiculous contract for the knicks either, given the off-court value and how little the luxury tax really affects them. just felt like mocking how a lot of people were blaming melo for lin being out with nyk after he said that

I don't see how it can be a decent contract for the Rockets and a ridiculous one for the Knicks.

I could argue that having the cap hit be especially loaded in that last year would make it easier to avoid that repeater tax that everyone seems so afraid of.

For the Knicks, it would count $15 mil in the 3rd year and if they don't move any of their large contracts (Melo, Amare), Lin would essentially end up costing them $30-35 mil with the luxury tax.

  • well, the knicks have never really stood much for austerity, have they?

they could just dump him as an expiring if it doesn't work out too

    screamin_jay

  • All this shit for a marginal player.

IF the Knicks has matched, out woulda have been only for the off-court money they would have made off him while pouring up with that turd contract.

Chip Kelly --> NFL --> Fired --> Maryland

    Hogie

  • Knicks would do better with Steve Blake at point.

    sgii

  • OK now I can go back to rooting against the dumb ass Knicks.

    A) That's a $13M expiring contract in three years, for a guy who would only be 26.

    B) What Lin did as a first-time starter (and practically rookie) was leaps and bounds better than what Jason Kidd and Raymond Felton could do.

    C) They just declined to bring back the most popular Knick since ... Sprewell? Really can't think of any Knick in the last decade who's turned the Garden that upside down.

    D) Who has any idea where they / Lin will be in three years? Take the risk at the benefit of not marginalizing your fan base and keeping an asset.

    cathal

  • the real reason why the knicks are catching flack is because overpaying for marginal players has been their strategy for many years.

I don't know if Lin was "leaps and bounds" better than Felton. RF was nearly an all-star in '10-'11.

It's not just about Lin. Would he have been the best choice to play a full season with Anthony? Would that have been a good use of payroll period?

  • I am convinced Lin didn't want to play with Anthony...Lin is a ball in hand PG and Anthony waves his hand in the air and wants the ball. If he wanted to stay in NY he could have and would have.

  • Off-court worth is entirely separate from contract cost.

Today he claims his preference was to stay with the Knicks.

He is naive, then. That balloon payment was surely designed to make the Knicks let him go.

This may well be the biggest deal in his career. No chance he compromises on money for his franchise "preference." That's an indulgence considered -- and generally rejected -- by a far higher caliber of player.

What I should have added was that he thought NYK was going to match until they got Felton.

His balloon payment clinched the fact that he wasn't coming back. If he had any influence in how the deal was structured, he should have kept the yearly salary closer to the AAV, rather than having it shoot up like a bad ARM.

I don't blame him at all for taking the money, but the deal seemingly was designed for the Knicks to turn it down so it shouldn't be a surprise that they did.

What is there to say? He's the prototypical "million dollar arm, ten cent head" player. He's such a great physical talent that teams will throw money at him in the hopes that he "figures it out" one day.

    This.

$44 million for 4 years. One of the best deals EG didn't make. If his head ever catches up to his body, look out.

  • Yeah, it doesn't make a ton of sense. Word was that Denver traded Nene because they had buyer's remorse for the deal they gave him.
Unless they have questions about his health that we don't know about, they just gave a similar contract to a guy with comparable stats (though generally inferior), and no maturity or concept of team play.
I guess they are gambling on his potential. Better them than us. Maybe it works out for Denver and we look like morons - wouldn't be the first time - but I can't remember the last time gambling on upside worked for the Wiz.
