Joe Montana vs Tom Brady

Elway played in a crap conference in the 80's. That is why he got exposed in the SB. For all the crap Favre gets for throwing playoff games away, he has a better postseason passer rating than Brady, Roethlisberger, and Elway who all have clutch reps.

As jay so eloquently put it, lol passer rating

  • it's almost time for coltsfan to put elway's stats into perspective for us with an absurd comparison

  • I don't think Elway was all that amazing. There is a great argument for Kurt Warner ahead of John Elway. Elway was never as good as peak Kurt Warner.

Here is the comparison. Here are guys right around John Elway's passer rating adjusted for era.

    Better than Elway:
    Jeff Garcia
    Rich Gannon
    Daunte Culpepper
    Mark Brunell
    Tony Eason
    Dave Krieg
    Carson Palmer

    Tied with Elway:
    Brian Griese (Elway's replacement)
    Steve McNair
    Jeff Hostetler
    Phil Simms
    Neil O'Donnell

    Slightly worse than Elway:
    Marc Bulger
    Brad Johnson
    David Garrard
    Jeff George
    Jim Harbaugh
    Jason Campbell

That's right, Jeff Garcia and Chad Pennington are farther ahead in passer rating adjusted for era than Elway, than Elway is ahead of Jason Campbell.

I'd argue Elway is closer to Mark Brunell than Tom Brady.

  • I don't care which of the top 30 all time QB's you give me. Just give me Belichick and at least 3 of his favorite linebackers. You can have whichever quarterback you want.

  • According to this new stat-adjustment software to compare QBs of different era's, Heath Shuler was actually a better QB than Johnny Unitas. Only an idiot would disagree.

  • Montana is romanticized in the NFL the same way MJ is in the NBA. Although he was way better than Favre (not as good as Elway).

It's not software. It's called basic math adjustments. You know the stuff you should have learned in school like regression analysis, mean, median, standard deviation, etc.

  • Brady is better than Montana, but not by as much as some think, IMO. Montana had better skill position players but I seem to remember his OL always kind of sucking. Montana was great a throwing out of the pocket and moved well. Something Brady can't do particularly well. In the end though, Brady simply makes great plays and passes seem routine on a game-to-game basis. He is the best.

Elway was great, great athlete, rocket arm. He matured late in his career, helping him finally get his SB rings. He did things on the field that nobody has ever done. However, when it comes to consistent greatness, he is a few steps behind the above two guys.

I love Peyton Manning. He is a surgeon that carves out the hearts of defenses. Still not as great as the above 3.

Favre makes too many stupid plays and has never seemed to mature as a QB. He was great but significantly behind the guys above.

It would have been interesting to see what Steve Young would have done if he'd not had the misfortune of being drafted by the Bucs and then wasting time in the USFL. I was always really impressed by him but he doesn't have the resume to enter the conversation.

    Same for Jim Kelly.

Edit: I forgot about Marino. I was never a fan but but I can respect his quick release and his accuracy. He put up great numbers over a long period of time. Still, I always kind of felt he was a little over-rated.

Coltsfan should be banned from football threads.
