Jerry Sandusky Trial

  • Deserves its own thread.

    Trial just started.

Here's a link to "complete coverage" from the Patriot-News.

  • Wow. Just....wow.

"The prosecutor said the same man would tell the jury about how Dottie Sandusky inadvertently interrupted an encounter in a San Antonio hotel after Sandusky brought the youth with him when Penn State played in the Alamo Bowl in December 1999 -- Sandusky's final game as a Penn State coach. Sandusky coerced him into engaging in oral sex in a hotel room bathroom, but was interrupted when the coach's wife entered the hotel room, McGettigan said."

Penn State Nittany Loins -- Jury sees pics of alleged Jerry Sandusky victims - ESPN

Jerry Sandusky was a serial predator who took advantage of fatherless children or those with unstable home lives and sexually abused them for years, the lead prosecutor said Monday in his opening statement at the former Penn State assistant football coach

  • Unrelated to the trial but things could get worse for Spanier and the gang.

According to the NBC report: "Internal e-mails and documents they say show former President Graham Spanier and others discussed whether they needed to tell authorities about a 2001 allegation involving a late-night encounter between a naked Sandusky and a young boy in the Penn State shower room. The sources say documents show Penn State even did legal research on the issue. But in one e-mail exchange, two sources say, Spanier and former vice president Gary Schultz agreed it would be 'humane' to Sandusky not to inform social services and the incident never got reported."

  • The trial is being held locally, and the jury has many PSU connected members. I guess the defense is looking for a "hung" (pun intended) jury by those wishing to protect the institution.

  • While they were at a hotel for the Alamo Bowl, Sandusky followed him into the room where he was showering, the man told the court. Sandusky pushed down on his shoulders and motioned for him to "go down there," he told the court.

"You don't want to go back to [your hometown]," the man said Sandusky told him. "He was trying to get me to give him oral sex and threatening me if I did not."

That incident was suddenly cut short when Sandusky's wife walked in, he told the court.

  • Speaking confidently and matter-of-factly, Victim 4 told jurors that he felt like he was a Penn State mascot. He got to spend his Saturdays with the Penn State football team. Throw balls around in their practice facilities. Watch games from Beaver Stadium’s sidelines. Travel with the team. Even shower in the locker rooms.

    “(I) loved it,” he testified.

But it was all at a cost: The 100-pound teen was forced to wrestle naked in showers with Sandusky, and the linebacker coach would maneuver himself on top until he could force oral sex, Victim 4 testified in court.

That was the price he paid to have Sandusky be “like my dad.”

And it continued for several years, he testified.

Victim 4, now a 28-year-old father, was the first of eight accusers to take the stand. Prosecutors are relying on them and at least two eye-witnesses to make 10 cases of abuse against the former Penn State football great.

Victim 4 said the abuse began in 1997 with shared showers, and car rides where Sandusky would keep his hand on his leg, “like I was his girlfriend.”

“It freaked me out,” he said.

That escalated to games in showers, which led to naked wrestling.

“I’m a little kid, there’s not much I could do. He’s a big guy,” Victim 4 testified. “He’d maneuver himself to be where I was in between his legs.”

  • i'm i the only one mind blown that anyone would step foot in that shower room ever again? it has to be bulldozed to the ground right? if i'm a recruit, just the fact that that facility is still in use eliminates them from contention...plus, you know, all the other evil crap.

  • The testimony of Victim 1 is pretty hard to read. I really hope they fucking torture Sandusky in prison.

Oh and burn that god awful school to the ground.

  • Sandusky's defense counsel has to be disbarred after this, right? I'm half joking here but how do you let this go to trial? Sandusky is as good as done and as good as dead once he hits the prison block.

I thought I read they're going to pull some type of behavior defense, can't remember the exact term. I'll go find it.

Yeah, I haven't followed this much, but from what I can tell, the only thing they've said is, "ZOMG, THE VICTIMS HIRED CIVIL LAWYERS. IT'S A MONEY GRAB!"

They are trying to use Histrionic Personality Disorder as an excuse for the "love" letters he wrote the victims. Not sure if they are trying to use that excuse for his entire defense.

Thanks, just found it on CNN.

Defense attorneys had filed a motion earlier Monday seeking to keep out testimony involving prosecutors' allegations Sandusky exhibited "grooming behavior," including the letters to Victim 4.

The lawyers said they intend to offer expert testimony from a psychologist who "will explain that the words, tones, requests and statements made in the letters are consistent with a person who suffers from a Histrionic Personality Disorder," the documents said.

According to the National Institutes of Health, those with histrionic personality disorder "act in a very emotional and dramatic way that draws attention to themselves."

"The goal of a person suffering from this disorder in writing those letters would not necessarily be to groom or sexually consummate a relationship in a criminal manner, but rather to satisfy the needs of a psyche belabored by the needs of such a disorder," the defense lawyers write in their motion.

From what I've read Amendola hasn't even tried to refute the allegations that Sandusky is a kiddy diddler. If his only play is, like EAM said, that the victims are going for a money grab then he is going to be sorely disappointed. In the face of all of this victim testimony he would have been better off copping a plea.

While I would normally agree, copping a plea would have pretty much meant a life sentence at Sandusky's age. They probably figured it would be no worse to roll the dice.

What exactly does Sandusky gain from a plea bargain? He would probably go to prison at least 10-20 years. If he is found guilty, he gets a life sentence which is basically the same as the 10-20 year sentence. He might have a 0.01-1% chance of getting but isn't that better than plea bargaining to a defacto life sentence.

That's basically what Kunal just said.

The rare instance where someone used more words than a lawyer to say the exact same thing!
