When A-Rod hits 775 HR's, he is going to wish that Brian Sabean had a better plan than to have Benito Santiago as a cleanup hitter protecting Barry Bonds.

Or do you just not remember Santiago batting behind Bonds and serving as his "protection" in the lineup? You want a boxscore? Here's one...from a playoff game no less, with Santiago hitting behind Bonds. Scroll through...Santiago hit behind Bonds in EVERY SINGLE GAME in that series. If you want, I can probably find another 50-100 games like this that season.

It's not quite that simple. Most of Bonds' at bats in 2001 came batting third in the lineup. Normally, Jeff Kent was the cleanup hitter in those lineups. Dusty Baker flipped Kent and Bonds in the order about halfway through the 2002 season. (Santiago did bat 4th and Bonds 3rd on two occasions in 2002.) By 2003, Kent was gone (and Santiago left the Giants following that season).
Baker didn't switch Kent and Bonds because of any protection issues related to Bonds, though. If anything, he did it for Kent. Santiago batted 5th in 57 games in 2002. He batted .323 with 7 homers and 39 RBI.
In previewing the World Series that season, Bill Madden wrote in the New York Daily News that "More to the point, Santiago has provided much-needed lineup protection for Bonds in the No. 5 slot."

Pointing out that Santiago didnt hit cleanup isnt being a smart ass. To use Santiago as the guy who "protected" Bonds throughout his career was ridiculous, that was my point.

I could see him getting to 700, but breaking the record is another story. I don't see how he gets there unless he goes to Germany and eats stem cells all off season like Kobe and Manning.

The batting average sort is being weird for me so I'm leaving that out but among qualifiers he's first in OBP, SLG and obviously OPS (.513 w/ 0.029 lead, .942 w/ .196 lead, 1.455 w/ 0.285 lead)
