Is Mark Gottfried now a good hire?

  • iheartjamesgist said...

Leslie is a stud, Brown at #37 isn't far from a 5*, Howell at #61 is pretty high and is a junior now, Wood has been one of the best players on the team since he was a freshman so it's clear he's better than his high school rating would indicate, and CJ Williams is a senior so who gives a crap about his high school ratings? The bench definitely isn't great, but that's a really good starting 5. UNC is really the only ACC team with more talent, and if you mention the high school ratings of Duke's players I'll slap you in the face.

This has been my point with them the whole time. I'd argue that Howell is absolutely an NBA player as are Leslie and Brown. The other two guys in their starting lineup will play professional basketball somewhere for a long time. The roster based on recruiting rankings is reasonably good, but these are talented players. They have a great balance of good PG play, good interior play, guys who can hit outside shots, guys who can bang and rebound inside, and guys like Leslie and Howell who can step out from the post and hit jumpers.

Anyone who saw this team over the past couple years could've told you it had a lot of talent, that was always the joke on Sidney Lowe as to how he could take these guys who are clearly very good individual talents and take them to the bottom of the league. The only reason they were picked where they were in the preseason polls is because of 5 years of Sidney Lowe and nobody having any clue about Gottfried.

  • I think Gottfried has done a very, very good job so far.

    That is my two cents.

Also, coaching is overrated. If you get monsters, even with a bad practice/gameday coach, you'll do well. Maybe not ships, but you'll have a good conference record and you'll be feared in March.

That is my other two cents.

Did you just try to argue that Maryland fans are more objective about Maryland than anybody else?

I could make a similar "objectivity" argument regarding your views on bad officiating and its impact on a basketball game.

My view on officiating is that nobody is objective.

    HoopheadVII

  • I'm 100% objective about everything.

Haha, of course not. I am arguing that local media and fans can have a more detailed and nuanced view of a situation that a national reporter doesn't have because he's covering dozens teams.

    Touché.

That just goes to show how inept he was.

It's not like you or I could step in and coach studs. You have to have some level of qualification. Lowe didn't have it. Who knows if Gottfried does, but when you're pulling in the talent that he's lining up, he's going to have to be some kind of awful to not at least maintain respectability. Might be that awful, who knows, but he sure seems to be an upgrade from Lowe.

  • Are we really trying to evaluate NCSTATE's overall on court talent level based upon stars next to their names in HS after we all watched, say, Mychal Parker and Terrell Stoglin this season?

Seriously, kinda funny how some people need to look at old, useless numbers to figure things out when it's plainly obvious that NC State is a talented team.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

    Omar Little

  • LOL at coaching being overrated. Unless you are absolutely loaded like Kentucky, coaching is really important. St. Louis beating Memphis is great example.

    charmcity3131

  • If this is as good as it gets for NC State, I don't think their own fans would think Gottfried was a great hire. Who am I to disagree?

    fuzzy510

  • Well judging Gott, who inherited a good roster, and Turge, who inherited a mediocre roster, on their first years is not too wise. The clock on both should really begin next year. Both are proving to be decent recruiters. You have to bring in the talent that makes sense to your coaching style and system. Is Gott a good hire?

Well, he's better than what they had before. If I recall, Gott's issues isn't coaching, it's personnel management, as in the front office. What he may lack there, I am sure, "Dr." Yow will make up with her program meddling.

    MoCoTerp

  • you'd have to say gottfried is a little better than a "decent" recruiter.

AlphaOmega said... im sorry i was confusing...your "Superbowl" was the Redskins losing since you know that the Ravens cant win it all.

    TheHugeManatee

  • He's better than decent, but not nearly as good as this class makes him look on paper. They fell into a fortunate situation where they had a bunch of elite talent in the Raleigh area that wanted to stay close to home and weren't all hotly contested by Duke and UNC, as well as Lewis who was a fringe 150 player when Gottfried landed him and before he moved to playing the point at Oak Hill.

  • Sidney Lowe was sooooo bad at coaching college basketball. It is crazy how bad he was.

Juries out on Gottfriend but if I were an NC State fan I obviously would be feeling great about it and there is nothing wrong with that.

    Canyonerooooo

  • I think they actually underacheived to their talent this year (during the season).

This! I think he'll turn out to be a pretty good hire personally. Let's let it play out. Next year should help fans see the direction of both programs.
