As a matter of fact, I'm not. He could have mentioned the Yankees as big spenders, as well, but he didn't, because they were his meal ticket for at least a half-dozen years. It wasn't too long ago that the Orioles were outspending virtually every team in baseball, including the Red Sox, and getting nothing out of it. I don't recall Buck bitching about that. There's a big difference between spending and spending wisely.

I didn't post the full quote because it wasn't relevant but he also said this:

“The first time we went to Yankee Stadium, I screamed at Derek Jeter from the dugout,” Showalter told the magazine. “Our guys are thinking, ‘Wow, he’s screaming at Derek Jeter.’ Well, he’s always jumping back from balls just off the plate. I know how many calls that team gets – and yes, he [ticks] me off.”

It's mostly jeter-centric but he did take a shot at the yanks

  • Someone said he wouldn't criticize the Yankees since he worked for them. He did, saying they were disrespectful after Flanagan's death.

Certainly not in amount; however, the Orioles' 1997 payroll, for example, was 60% higher than the Sox payroll. That's significant. From 1995-98, the O's were first or second in payroll in MLB each year. It was only in 2000, when they reduced their payroll by 20% from 1999 and most other teams were increasing theirs, that we started hearing about the 'competitive imbalance' which has been the hue and cry of the last decade.

This year, Boston, Philly and NY are outspending the average MLB team by more than what the O's payroll was in 1997 (the last winning season for the O's). Comparing MLB payrolls in 1997 (before regional sports networks) to what they currently are is a bit disingenuous. Surely you can understand that the O's spending $65 million in 1997 to the Red Sox $41 million is less of an advantage than this year Red Sox's payroll of $164 million to the O's $85 million. And as other have mentioned. Buck bitched far more bout NY than Boston this year.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

  • BTW the "lol" was not in regards to Showalter's comment, but the fact that the poster thought he wouldn't take a shot at the Yankees. Sorry to offend you Jay.

  • LOL at 74umgrad. No one should be surprised a bandwagon Sawx fan has no idea what he's talking about.

  • there is nothing I want more than for Boy Wonder to want to find that "diamind in the rough" and hire Pete Mackanin from the Phillies......the city of Boston will implode. I have read a few places that this is a definite possibility

LOL at using "quotes" for competitive imbalance as if it doesn't exist. Even if the Orioles spent SF Giants money ($118 million payroll) - a reasonable amount for a playoff team with a ton of stars - the Red Sox would have spent 27% more, the Yankees 42% percent more.
