Pretty sure if Israel had qualified guys like Ryan Braun and Kevin Youkilis said they would play for them.
There's a 7'1" guy pitching for the Dutch, bottom 9th up 6-2.
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
Given the lack of baseball in Europe they'd have a tough time filling out a 16 team bracket if they only allowed Italian citizens to play. Hopefully in 8-12 years the roster will start being filled out with more and more players who were born and grew up in Italy.
We need someone in here like ftn in O's threads with starting line-ups, tweets, etc... It's game day. Someone be that person for this thread re: USA.
Taiwan and Japan going to extras.
In related news, I have no legal way of streaming the games, even as a subscriber to MLB.TV, because I have Comcast. Way to build the tournament, butthats.
Lineupes haven't been posted but tonight's starters are R.A. Dickey vs. Yovani Gallardo. Mexico is facing elimination.
Japan and the Netherlands through to the winners' bracket.
Italy and the Netherlands have semi-legit national leagues and some professional players, Holland more than Italy but Italy did win the 2012 European Baseball championship with mostly native Italian players. Germany has started to produce some minor league players and has a academy for baseball. Outside of that baseball is pretty non-existent in Europe but Italy could probably fill out a decent team with Italian born players but probably not to compete at this level.
As someone who enjoyed the tournament in past years I have forgotten about this. MLB has completely buried it
Seriously? Have you not followed baseball at all in the last month or not tuned in to MLBN?
March is a tough time to have this because of college hoops, but there really isn't another time it could be held.
Go away, KA!
i have zippy confidence in dickey starting tonight
It's pretty much all MLBN is talking about now. I'm not sure how you can make that claim.
Yeah, not to pile on but it's been pretty hard to miss WBC stuff. Anyhow, was skeptical but just having legit baseball to watch is great. Haven't really been following but I guess Mexico assumed they could beat Italy with legit ass pitcher Rodrigo Lopez and saved Gallardo for us?
I would think so although strategy wise I wonder if it would've been smarter to punt the game against the US and go all out against Italy and Canada.
Is this game on TV? Also, where is it being played?
MLBN. Pool D (US/Canada/Italy/Mexico) is playing in Arizona and pool C (Venezuela/D.R./Puerto Rico/Spain) is playing in San Juan.
Is Italy really going to advance? That's absurd.
"Mine eyes have seen the glory" the Italian Jack Edwards right now after that 4 run inning.
chris colabello is a god, whoever the hell he is
Pretty sure this rule applies to the olympics too.
Italy mercy rules Canada, all but guaranteeing them a spot in the next round.

Not that it will matter, but I don't understand how you can have a mercy rule when one of the tiebreakers is run differential.
Where would Italy have ranked out of the 16 teams? 12th?
Its not just RD. RS/Offensive Innings minus RA/Defensive innings.
