Not sure which of the threads this fits best in since he's a Terp too, but Robbie Rogers apparently retired today. A little bit of other news in there too for those that care/want to read it
for those who don't want to read it...he's gay.
Steven Goff @SoccerInsider
Landon Donovan won't return to Galaxy training until late March, ruling him out of next 2 #usmnt WC qualifiers: http://ow.ly/hNfwj #mls
Also, Goff reports that there will be a Gold Cup-related press conference in Pasadena on Wednesday.
So he is going to miss basically a month of the MLS season? Are you kidding me?
What's his deal? Existential crisis during which soccer can't be played?
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
...which was just to say that Mexico will open the tournament at the Rose Bowl on July 7. No other details about groups, schedule, etc.

CONCACAF prez Webb says confederation is looking into having Gold Cup every four years from every 2 years

Webb says #CONCACAF is looking into Copa America with South America in 2016
Gold Cup should obviously be held once every 4 years. This years is totally meaningless, but I doubt CONCACAF is going to forfeit the revenue they receive from the useless one they hold each cycle the year before the WC.
Go away, KA!
Maybe they will if Copa Panamerica gets going? That will be some serious TV dollar bills if it takes off.
So are we going to make the World Cup?
CONCACAF 4th place finisher plays against the Oceania winner (New Zealand) to get the last invite. If not for that, I'd be very worried. Still don't feel super comfortable.
If we can't finish ahead of Panama and Jamaica, we should ban soccer balls from ever entering the US.
But to answer the original question, we've played one match out of ten in qualifying. We lost, but it was one of our three hardest matches we'll play. If we can beat Costa Rica at home, we'll be in fine shape to qualify even assuming we lose in Mexico.
Top 3 teams qualify, and we really shouldn't have any trouble finishing top 3. This year we get a safety net in that the 4th place team will be in a home and home playoff against (likely) New Zealand, who suck.
This cycle is a lot more balanced too, so I would expect to see a lower point total being needed to get 3rd and 4th than before where there were two clear tiers. It's entirely possible that 13 or 14 points could qualify someone.
The U-20s play Canada tonight in an elimination qualifier for the World Cup in Turkey in June. It's 6 pm / Fox Soccer.
Ugh, fucking Canada again?
Feel bad about how the USMNT look these days? Don't worry, Canada is about to knock another of our youth teams out of the World Cup!
Luis Gil is the man
Nevermind, looks like my Hogie-ing has worked, 3-1 US at the half.
That said, this team sucks compared to our last two.
I have a serious man-crush on him. He might be the most intelligent American I've ever seen.

Uh, the last team was the pile of shit that got eliminated by Guatemala. Now granted I haven't seen the game yet, but I can't imagine these guys are any worse than that team that provided a decent number of players who then shit the bed in Olympic qualifying too.
I am feeling good about being high on Jose Villarreal after seeing him in the Academy finals a couple years ago before he joined the Galaxy. That Pats team had some sick talent, and Villarreal scored an insane goal to win the championship.
Remember when the 2007 U-20 team was going to be our golden generation?
Of the starting XI, Perk, Sturgis, Rogers, Wallace, Valentin, and Szetela are all either out of soccer or are barely seeing the pitch, as is presumed We-Finally-Found-a-Striker Gabe Ferrari.
I'll take a u20 class of altidore and bradley anyday of the week.
Villarreal and Gil are class and are quite promising. Mario Rodriguez has been on the radar forever and is invisible half the time and then he does something brilliant before disappearing again. The back line is questionable, Santos Laguna kids have some talent...but then again they don't have Brooks, Zimmerman, Pelosi (hurt), and others who are still in Europe. I don't care about how the team itself does so much as looking for individual talent. Just not sure about this bunch.
That midget Cuevas was a fucking monster yesterday.
He doesn't even get minutes on Santos Laguna's U21 team. NuAdu?
