He's officially been fired.
I'm really surprised this didn't happen yesterday.
They have a long history of it, too. From other hoops coaches doing stuff like this to the student who killed himself over the gay taunting.
Really wondering if Delany would go back in time and not add Rutgers if he could.
AD has to go too. As Andy Staples points out:
"Every coach at the school will have to deal with this video as they try to recruit players for their programs. If I'm in New Jersey recruiting football players, I'm showing the recruits and their parents that ESPN video and saying that based on his choice to keep Rice, the Rutgers AD condones this sort of activity. Do you want your son or daughter playing for an athletic department where the man in charge thinks that's OK?"
Got to totally clean house.
Imagine you are the parent of a very good high school basketball player. Imagine your son has scholarship offers from several schools -- good mid-majors and mediocre power-conference programs. Imagine one of those schools is Rutgers.
Go away, KA!
So Rice is gone, no brainer. There are now reports that Murdoch asked for 1Mil, Rutgers countered 200k. I just dont see how more heads roll because of this. They should have just canned this mediorce coach when it came to light, again the coverup taking down people.
AD said he thought it was "better to rehabilitate" Rice at the time the video surfaced in December.
You gotta think he's going down for this too, right?
Hadn't thought of that. Rutgers may be a mess for a while. Not what the Big 10 (or whatever) needs.
No one cares about Rutgers basketball. Football just came off of a double digit win season and they now have money pouring into the program. Rutgers will be fine as long as they fire the AD.
Hey NYCTerp were you sitting in section 8 row 11 by any chance last night
"I like fixing broken things" - Kevin Plank
no. couldn't justify a midweek trip for the NIT.
NYCTerp is now OCTerp
he should. He basically let it slide and he now it's all uncovered and he's screwed.
i find it more pathetic that rice threw the basketball like a little child than physically abusing them. Who the f throws a basketball at a person besides a spoiled little 5 yr old.
Grade A bully meat head.
There's really a person on here saying he shouldn't be fired? I can't even comprehend that logic. Aside from a possible lawsuit issue, how will a coach recruit with the whole world knowing that went on? How does the AD raise money when the alumni know he lets this guy remain the coach after that? That's also why the AD's gotta go too, though he might keep his job because he lucked into getting them into the B1G.
they obviously weighed the RISK of it getting out. You, and EVERYONE, are now judging their decision in HINDSIGHT now that everything is out there, which is awfully easy to do isnt it?

Like I need hindsight to tell me I shouldn't fire a coach when a disgruntled (soon to be) former employee brings me videotape of him cursing, using racial and homophobic slurs, shoving players and throwing basketballs at their heads.
i thought he was capitalizing certain words to form a new secret sentence, damn it
I can't believe it took 4 pages to get to this point. This video is OLD and the AD knew about it. And he was still on TV stumbling about. The AD even said, "I knew eventually this would get out" yet he still didn't have any quality prepared statements. LOL
No chance they don't sweep him out too.
Any rational human can understand this is a lowlight clip. But there are A LOT of lowlights and not one of them are acceptable.
Can't wait to be in the same conference with these bozos.
They basically took the Ped State approach. Releasing it to the public would be a PR nightmare, so they chose to keep quiet. Of course verbally abusing college students is a wee bit less severe than raping 8 year olds.
They obviously didn't accurately weigh that risk. According to the AD, he knew the tape would emerge eventually. And within 24 hours of the tape emerging, he was forced to make a drastically different decision on the whole thing than he originally made. So either the AD made a bad decision at the time, or he is pussing out on his original decision immediately after it reflects poorly on him. I'm guessing (hoping) that he didn't base his initial decision only on a 90 second videotape, but spoke with players, looked at other portions of his coaching, etc., before he made the initial decision. But if he did, and that's the decision he came to, then be a man and stick behind it, even when it makes you look bad. Especially if, as he says, he knew the video tape would surface eventually.
I'm not in the scorched earth camp here that thinks the whole department should be cleared, Gov. Christie impeached, Bon Jovi disbanded, etc. And I agree that message boarders can be pretty cavalier about other peoples' livelihoods, though Rice should be fired and should have been fired in November.
But this whole process was mismanaged pretty badly by the AD, and he isn't helping himself with some of his quotes either, because he makes it seem like the only basis for a change of heart is when the public was going to find out about it.
its funny how college football players are sticking up for Rice, basketball players the opposite. Different set of standards for each sport. As AJ Francis tweets, this happens everywhere, with great coaches who are universally loved. Should we fire all coaches? #internetoutrage #Idemandfirings
You show me a college athlete that feels their coach has never crossed the like and I'll show you a liar...
Coaches cross the line all the time. Ev. Ree. Day.
now i think lefty might be a lewd alias
Pete White @Big_Thickz67 17m
@AJFrancis410 what would you do if he threw a basketball at you? Its one thing if he yells I can take that but throwing stuff is different
Damn those football players always sticking up for the basketball coach who throws balls at kids.
Why are you guys responding seriously to lefty?
