There are some outright busts in that group - Pokulok, Finley, Gustafsson (who we KNEW was an injury case when we drafted him). There are also guys like Schultz, Gordon, and Eminger who became serviceable players but not at the first-round level, and then there's Fehr, who became a nice player this year but was also taken one spot before Ryan f'ing Getzlaf in a draft loaded with future All-Stars. If you want to have a nice cry, look at the players taken after Fehr in the first and second round of that draft.
Green and Carlson were steals in the late first round, Kuz may yet be, and he certainly flipped Varly for big value. Ovie first overall was a no-brainer and Backstrom and Alzner were very high picks so I'm not sure he should get credit for any of them.
Bottom line - I'm not sure he's done any better than anyone with access to a Hockey News scouting report couldn't do. And we haven't even gone back to Brian Sutherby or Kris Beech.
Also JLC knows hockey and writes very well about it. It's clearly his first sports love, and he's local so I'm sure he's coming at this as both someone who has a connection or two and a genuine fan.
Looks like party time in Georgetown today, looks like the guys got over the loss pretty damn quick.
This team's goal is raising a banner each year, so mission accomplished!
It rankles a bit because of the timing, but this doesn't really bother me. What are they supposed to do, lock themselves in a room with only game film, a bike, and weights for the next three months?
It bothers me much more if they're out drinking the night before a game, and we all know that isn't happening for a while.
I know, youre right.
They dont have to lock themselves in and mourn forever.
I don't have an issue with it. The players are who they are. I'd argue the mix more than the players themselves.
It could be a Richards and Carter situation in Philly. Despite the talent it was just never going to come together around them. They get traded away and end up with a cup.
I once had a conversation with an athlete who came here from another city, and on his prior team he had a teammate - a very good player - who played in Washington for a while and was known for his partying. The guy I was talking with made a good point - people from the outside think that if you "improve" the lifestyle you're automatically going to improve the play, but the reality is that so much of the success and failure of pro athletes is based on mental factors that if you change the lifestyle against what the guy wants to do, the play is as likely to get worse as it is to get better.
The Philly situation was horseshit - just an overrated organization looking for easy scapegoats. Mike Richards is an awesome player, a winner, and I would kill to have him in a Caps uniform.
Just for you gocaps cuz I like ya. I've also pretty much been off the Internet since Monday night so it's super cool that we et to do this again. Been racking my brain for a week and all I've come up with is jack shit. Team needs a witch doctor.
Thank you. It's already irritating enough being a Caps fan so any additional irritation I can clear away is helpful.
Lets trade Backstrom, Neuvy, and whatever late first we have to Florida and draft HOF MacKinnon.
It's so much better that the Rangers are going to get swept. Makes our loss (and excuses) that much more pathetic
I am not really over the loss so I am still angry...but my latest thoughts..
- thank god Wolski signed with a Russian team so we do not have to deal with them
- goodbye to Hendricks if the Rangers are going to offer money like is rumored
- GMGM's comments, and I am paraphrasing, "we are close" just pisses me off..we are not close...we need a major change...
- Neuvy needs to be given a chance to start next year...Holtby needs to be pushed
Damn..now, I am angry thinking about these clowns again...
And oh yeah..Ted..thanks for billing the playoff tickets a day after elimination
Jackie Robinson isn't dirty. This isn't Pack Pride.
Rock the Red!!
Wow. That is just...wow.
Ted is so fucking clueless
Neuvy had a "chance" to start this year when Holtby sucked early, did nothing and then got sick. His career stats also below average. Not sure what people see there. He has a .909 save percentage in 106 games. Holtby is at .923 in 53 games. He could have been better in the New York series, I guess, but in 21 playoff games he's even better at .931. You can win with those numbers. Neuvy is a good back up and a trade chip if Grubauer develops.
That could not have been more arrogant and condescending
Early in the season, I told everyone who would listen that Holtby would fail and Neuvy would end up the best goalie of the Varly-Neuvy-Holtby trio. I was completely wrong. He's been outstanding.
Oh yeah - F Ted.

I am still not ready to give up on Neuvy...just like his game...
I guess my frustration with HOltby is his play of the puck...drives me crazy..
But after reading that sh!t from Ted....it just pisses me off and makes me realize my money I spend on the Caps is just for good old regular season fun because he is not serious about the Cup....
I would move the money to the Nats...but I love hockey way too much
Georgetown degree value plummeting.
