Caps signed Jack Hillen from the preds this morning. One year deal. Depth defenseman, #8 on our depth chart. He's played in too many games for us to keep him in Hershey, so I'm not sure why we signed him. Maybe someone's on the way out.
If you recall a couple years ago, he was with NYI and got drilled point-blank in the face with an Ovi slap shot on the powerplay.

Oh yeah! I had forgotten about that. That was frightening.
Maybe we're looking to deal someone? The Preds didn't extend him a QO, so we might have gotten him on the cheap.
Its $650k I think I read. Pennies, but he will be taking an NHL roster spot, and we don't need 8 defensemen full time on the roster. Someone's gotta go.
Gotta be a trade coming. I like Orlov but would definitely make him part of a package for a guy like bobby ryan. I hope that's in GMGM's head
FWIW, what I read about Hillen is that he's left-handed, skates and moves the puck well, but is prone to defensive-zone lapses. That was always the book on Orlov, though he turned out to be better than expected in his own zone. If he's leaving in a package for someone like Ryan or Nash, then this signing suddenly makes WAY more sense.
Just looked at the cap numbers...and Ryan's contract is awesome. 3 more years at $5.1m/year for a 25 year old elite scorer. That's a steal. Ribeiro money.
For comparison, Nash is signed for four more years, but his cap hit is $7.8m a year and he's three years older than Ryan.

Somebody legitimately assess for me the chances we land Ryan or Nash. I, for one, believe it rhymes with NIPPY.
BB loved Green. Maybe he is part of the Bobby Ryan package.
Otherwise, this signing is stupid. GM has said he hates carrying 8 DMen.
Rick Nash 0% (DO NOT WANT)
Bobby Ryan 20%
No way we're dealing Green. If you do that, you'd have to ask Carlson to play big minutes on both the power play and PK. I love Carlson, but that's asking too much of him.
I'm actually expecting Green to have a bounceback year this season. He was clearly off offensively after he got back from his injury. His decision-making was much slower and his once-lethal pinpoint shot was all over the place. But he played reasonably well in his own end.
Agreed completely on Nash. His contract is horrible for his production. Would love ryan but don't think we are willing to give up the assets (I would be though). Something like mojo + orlov or schultz + 2013 1st might get it done. Bruce loves him some Jeff Schultz.
Orlov would be far more likely to head out in that trade though. Is that a price people would be willing to pay? (orlov/mojo/1st)
Would love me some Bobby Ryan.
I would do that in a heartbeat. Orlov would be the best asset we give up but right now he's a 4/5 dman prone to defensive lapses and probably will be for at least 3 more years though I bet he blossoms into a #2 depending on his partner. The first rounder would hopefully be late and probably show no dividends at nhl level for 3-4 years if at all. Lastly I think Marcus problem is he's stuck between 2nd/3rd line and can't successfully fill either role consistently for the team and one day he might be a consistent 2nd liner but it sure as hello isn't looking like it'll be at center. I'd sure miss sitting behind his girlfriend though.
I know Bobby Ryan has more value for the caps than those 3 assets next year and probably for the next 5 as well
Yeah that would be my starting offer if I'm gmgm. If they want a more established player, give them Laich. I think we can replace his production if needed.
In smaller news, rookie development camp is next week @ kettler. Basically for 6 days all the prospects practice and scrimmage and its open to the public. Think I might try to attend the scrimmage on Monday @ 3. I really want to see Wilson, forsberg, galiev, and schilling (all confirmed). All 8 draft picks from this year are attending as well as a bunch from 09-11
Thats a solid ass top two lines.
It would fit the script for him to have some monster year when he's on a 1 year qualifying offer only to have us offer him a second ludicrous contract.
Matty P gets 2 year $2.1mil ($1.05 AAV) deal. Think that's a good price since I like watching the guy and its a bargaining for his points and versatility.
However its a horrible deal if the team is stupid and smug enough to think he should consistently be a top 6 winger and replacement for Semin. Perreault apparently was promised top 6 minutes when he signed, scary thought
Fuck that. And I like Perreault
If our second line is going to include a stud scorer with size like Bobby Ryan, then I don't mind Matty P on the second line. His problem isn't his skill or speed, it's his size, and he'd thrive on a line with Ribeiro and Ryan/Nash/whoever taking away the defensive attention.
If the idea is that our second line is going to be MoJo/Ribeiro/Perreault, then it's time. It would be very Caps to finally get a 2C and have no wingers for him.
