The 'Cakes injury took a hot bat out of the order in the second half, and that hurt us when others cooled off against the Yankees. This team as currently configured is a good one but needs a right handed bat in the middle of the line up. I will bet one shows up via trade before the season begins, maybe much earlier.
Shifts do hurt OF. When a 2B is making the catch, the RF doesn't get credit for the out, but it doesn't hurt him. Just a wash on a few balls that would otherwise be easy outs. Although it goes the other way too. That 2B might catch a few that would drop and are worth 0 instead of -. The park shouldn't consistently underrate players. I could get inconsistencies, but not just being wrong. It doesn't make sense. I would expect it to overrate him if anything.
That's 24 of the 25. I didn't look at the schedule to see how often we would need a 5th starter to see if we get away with one less arm in the pen. Either way, if it appears Reimold s the every day DH, which I see as possible. Your regular starting lineup would have mclouth in left and reimold at DH. Having a RH OF on the bench could be an asset. While we lose power numbers with hoes vs Pearce or Valencia, we may not lose OBA and you likely add base running/speed
So who has off April 5th?

If Roberts is starting (big if, obviously) than Casilla is your speed off the bench. Even if he isn't I'd still prefer Pearce or Valencia over Hoes/Avery. Fact is the only guy in the starting lineup you're pinch running for is Wieters.

Two sources tell me the Sox are going after Adam LaRoche, who's seeking a three-year deal. Third source says he won't budge on the years

I just embarrassed myself with this post
She's a keeper IMO
I think it's kind of unrespectful- Ovie
Awesome. FYI- I'm pretty sure if you can't make 5 games in April/May work, you can trade in a couple of your games to upgrade to better seats for fewer games.
I don't consider hoes and Avery the same. I'm not counting on Roberts but I think I need to include him at this point.
We know what Pearce, and to a lesser extent, Valencia are. On a given day, they provide better offense than lew ford against LHP. However, on a given day, they could be out of baseball. Hoes has had success at every level but he's not blowing anyone away. I like to examine the unknown and find out if it might be better than the known. If not, I can always go back to what I know. Is hoes likely to surprise? No. Have stranger things happened? Certainly. Is it fun to ask yourself questions and then answer them? Of course.
The bottom line on Hoes and Avery is that they are better off playing every day at AAA rather than riding the bench in Baltimore while hoping for at-bats as a 5th OF.
That is what guys like Steve Pearce were born to do.
FWIW, if LaRoche ends up in Boston, and they decide to stay away from Napoli, I'd be all over Napoli on a 1/10 type of deal.
I'd be shocked if we signed Napoli to a pillow contract following a failed phsyical with Boston. Thrilled and shocked.
It's against Angelos' MO, but it fits the type of value signing DD would go after.
new batting practice caps!
Every three or four years, all 30 MLB teams get new batting practice cap designs. The upcoming season is one of those years, so you'll soon see teams
"Maryland football: Where everybody gets hurt and the starting left tackle has an existential crisis."
Hoes has done that already. What is there for him to learn there?
Didnt' realize they never signed off on that Napoli deal yet.
He has not had a full season at AAA. I'm sure there is plenty he could still learn there.
Regular playing time > riding the bench for young position players.
Is that grey? Not sure if I like that or not, need to see some side angles.
Looks like there could be some grey trim. I'm a fan.
I will say, after looking at some of the others, I would have loved if they'd gone with the Angry Bird on the BP caps.
