What if Gary came back? He did coach the ucla of the east...
Soooooo UCLA is firing a coach that took them to 3 straight FINAL FOURS?!? I mean i know the last few years have been frustrating but he's recruiting at a high level and if it wasnt for a thug like Reeves Nelson hijacking his program he prob wouldnt have missed the tourney for those years.
He's cheating his ass off to barely stay above water, plus they're about the least cohesive elite program out there. They're a mess. He should be gone.
Meh. It's UCLA. They have every right to expect the best when it comes to basketball.
I think its more than that though, I think Walton and other high profile alums weren't thrilled with the style of play Howland likes (slow) and his relationship with past players.
Go away, KA!
Won the P12 regular season this year, no? Might've won the tournament had he not lost one of his better players in the semis.
They were a 6 seed in the tournament, it's not like they were top 10 all year. Being a 6 seed at UCLA isn't going to cut it, especially when you take into account his last few seasons.
Part of that is because they lost Adams. If he had been healthy, they were probably a five or four.
It is the business walk of the biggest, baddest bear in the national park happening upon an abandoned picnic.
They likely would've been higher had they not lost whoever it was they lost in the P12 semis.
CAN WE PLEASE TYPE OUT PAC-12
I don't see how gott gets a raise at ncsu. He was the worst coach in the ACC this year if not country. Huge letdown
"Turgeon has 3 key guys on current roster - Allen, Dez, and Jake - that have not improved." -Orioleterp
Wasn't Howland kind of exposed in that SI article late last season? He also somehow had an overall losing season at UCLA a few years ago. I don't see how that's even possible. I'd think Smart could have them elite again pretty soon.
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
Why would Howland be retained? Is there any logical argument that he's the best coach UCLA pay millions of dollars to?
Chris Collins getting a major conference job is best case scenario for us Duke haters. The more shitty coach k assistants that have head coaching experience when he retires, the more likely that one of them is hired instead of Brad Stevens
Frankly, I don't give a fuck who Duke hires after K is gone. It's not our problem anymore.
Didn't the original tweet say he'd be fired tomorrow?
darren rovell @darrenrovell 22 Mar Without Twitter, no one would even know there was a soccer game on. Love this medium.
He tweeted this during the USMNT game on Friday. ABOUT A GAME ON ESPN. ESPN.
Howland had a lot of off-court issues at UCLA. The decision to fire him was made awhile ago, if they did anything less than sweet 16 this year he was fired.
Some people call UCLA AD, Dan Guerrero, the Kevin Anderson of the West. But Guerrero made a really good football hire last year.
You're probably the only person that calls him that.
That's the George Michael, "Some people are saying..." line.
classlessthug: I have too much on my plate to worry about the fact that my junk intimidates some needle D undergrad.
Not sure what you're getting at, and as much as I can't stand him, he's dead on.
The first WCQ wasn't even on most people's tvs, and this one only made news because of a snowstorm.
I really think Brad Stevens will never leave Butler for any job, except maybe Duke. With them moving to the Catholic conference, he has the chance to turn them into a real power.
Shaka Smart I think would be smart to leave VCU for UCLA. Mark Few would be an interesting choice for UCLA as well...I also didn't realize he's only 50.
Considering the same medium he praised (making it the quintessential Rovell tweet) dubbed Thursday the "Annual Try and Find TruTV" day, I think a game being broadcast on ESPN wasn't going to go unnoticed. Not ESPN2. Not ESPNU. Not WatchESPN. ESPN, the channel that's in almost 100 million US households, or roughly 120% as many as the next highest sports channel.
To ignore the impact of the snowstorm (and Twitter) on the number of eyes on that game would be foolish. Saying "no one would even know" about the game is just as foolish, IMO. How many people are instinctively punching in ESPN's channel number every time they turn on the TV, their show goes to commercial, they want to catch scores, etc
I'd think UCLA could do better than Few. 14 years at Gonzaga and just 4 S16's, zero E8s. You're firing a coach who just won the P12 tournament and had 3 F4s in 10 years. I'm not sure Few's track record is that much of an improvement.
I think Shaka and Stevens are definitely candidates but UCLA is going to go after some high major coaches. Would Thad Matta listen? Billy Donovan has flirted with (and accepted) other positions. Tom Izzo has flirted with the pros, wonder if maybe he's looking for a change. Not saying any of those three are the favorites or even likely, but it wouldn't shock me if UCLA pulled in a big name coach who is entrenched at a high major program.

I would love love love for them to get Donovan. Florida does not deserve him

UCLA just isn't the great job it used to be.
